We get a convoy carrying three Base Forces to Amchitka and find out that the Americans can throw away their airframes as well. The convoy unloads but loses 3 AK and an LSD in exchange for this:

As hoped for, the CVEs near Tabitueau are spotted and the clarion call of 'Enemy Carriers' rings out! Let us see what Mr. Roper does.

The Kido Butai slips past Wake by four hexes and is not seen...

STUPID! I watched the approach and had TWO that should have gone in. Neither did and I now have two BBs needing some AR time at either Truk or Rabaul. He has moved Liberators into Maleolap and I have to worry about Port Strikes. Might look at setting Saipan up as my 'rear area' base with ARs and AKEs...

That's pretty good shooting against 2nd generation allied fighters. Also interesting to note no torpedo planes

He ran into a stacked CAP of Tony at 31K, George at 26K, and A6M4 at 16K. It worked pretty well. I had roughly 15 of each planes type over that convoy.

He has Avengers in the Marshalls but no Command HQ for Torps--thankfully--so none were dropped. There was not Command HQ/Air Force HQ seen in any of the Aleutian landings.

The CVEs are spotted again as they 'trail' their coats for the Allies to see.

NOTE: Mr. Roper has weakness in his air search near Wake.

Kido Butai is a complete surprise until SS Snapper raises its periscope and fires a pair of fish at CVL Ryujo near Wake. They miss but might be safe to say the word is now out. Let us see what his reaction shall be. Turn the bows SE and move in...

We'll see how strong of action my opponent takes but this is what shall happen tomorrow. The Kido Butai in two TF moves SE as shown. The CVE TF moves NE and ends as shown.

In this old version of RA, here is the Japanese Fleet in August 1943 without taking any losses to date:

Kido Butai-1 Fast TF at 31 Knots
Shokaku/Zuikaku
Hiryu/Soryu
Renkaku/Taikaku/Ryukaku
CB Ikoma, 2 CA, 2 CL, 10 DDs

TOTAL: 525 Planes--168 M5b Zero, 211 Judy, 138 Jill, and 9 Recon Judy

Kido Butai-2 Slow at 26 Knots
Akagi/Kaga
Hiyo
Chitose/Chiyoda/Nisshin/Mizuho
Ryujo/Zuiho/Shoho
3 CA, 1 CL, 10 Dd

TOTAL: 404 Planes--248 M5b Zero, 75 Judy, and 81 Jill

Kido Butai: 929--416 Zero, 286 Judy, 219 Jill, and 9 Recon Judy

CVE TF
8 CVE and 9 DD

TOTAL: 219--83 M5b Zero, 36 Judy, and 57 Jill

Those are the ships and the numbers for this point in a version of RA that is 3+ years old...

This is probably going to be your last opportunity to strike the Allied CVs before they become too powerful. Love the idea of coming down from that open northern flank which has been the bane of many AFBs before. Too bad they've been spotted though...seems unlikely you'll get the battle you want.

Boring...

Post by John 3rd »

August 18, 1943

Been a very boring set of turns recently but that looks to be changing. Emily spot a set of approaching American TFs including APAs and CVs. Looks like they are 2-3 days from Rio Namur or Kwajalein. The entire Japanese Fleet can be there in TWO. Time to polish and sharpen the spears one more time...

Ummmm...looks like this could be very interesting.

20 B-24 attack Kwajalein and are met by the new 24 A6M8s. The Fighters do quite well shooting down a dozen of the big bombers. There are then sweeps of 9 F4U, 12 P-38, and 12 P-38. Lose eight Zeros but hold out pretty well. He is trying to MSW my MF here and so 48 Judy arrive at Roi Namur.

AV at Kwajalein is 185 and Roi Namur is 165 and climbing. Have 54 Transports flying in elements of the 56th ID. Still got room for 1,000 more troops so they are coming in to help.

Here comes Kido Butai.

My opponent almost always waits a day or two. I think it is in his conservative personality to always think before pulling the final plug for 'go' or 'no go.' He gives me the day. If there is another hesitation tomorrow then we will try to meet this Landing Force at sea and KILL the troops while at sea.

Target is almost certainly Kwajalein and Roi Namur. They have plenty of supply and LOTS of back-up.

Movement:
Truk Admiral Tanaka arrives with the 4 Kongos. They refuel tomorrow.

Rio Namur 5 DD arrive and will sweep in Kwajalein to prevent minesweeping then retire to Kusaie.

Kusaie A TF of 1 CL and 6 DDs arrive.

12 hexes NE Tulagi finds 8 CVEs and 9 DDs moving NE.

Good luck John! Hopefully more happens than you fruitlessly losing planes and pilots to cap like will inevitably start happening in the late war. If youre seeking a decisive battle make sure you can get cripples out somehow, you can't afford losses like he can.

Weren't those supposed to go to the Aleutians?

Hee-Hee-Hee! I had a hunch that--for once--appears to be correct...

Those BAD BOYS fuel and are now moving SE. I've got a BUNCH of 14" Ammo and I looking to deliver it...

Exodus, Part TWO

Post by John 3rd »

Has anyone seen the Battlestar Galactica episode entitled 'Exodus, Part Two?' Well...we may just be acting that one out right now.

Kido Butai moving into strike range.

The 5 DDs sink 3 PT Boats at Kwajalein and will sweep into Maleolap this turn.

CL Nagara and 6 DDs advance from Kuaise to hit anything around Jaliut.

Adm Tanaka departs Truk and heads SE with his strike force.

The CVE's are spotted and they will move up to be one hex south of Tabitueau.

There will be blood next turn...

One of the better dramatic series on TV in the past 20 years.
I have the 4 cds from each season I play occasionally while flipping turns.
5 cds actually as Season 4 was a 2-fer...

Good hunting.

Exodus, Part TWO

Post by John 3rd »

Morning turn done and I sent this message:

OK MISTER Roper. I’ve got most of my toys and I am willing to play. IS this the correct sandbox for our play date? [:'(]

Shoot this back and we’ll get in one more before work.

Exodus, Part TWO

Post by John 3rd »

Pull back shot as the Galactica is being CRUSHED by four basestars. Missiles come onto the screen and begin massively impacting one of the four basestars. Camera shifts and shows the Battlestar Pegasus arriving and taking the BAD GUYS by surprise:

Commander (Pegasus) Lee Adama: "OK! Fire up that main battery"

Dwalla: "The Cylons are moving to bracket us."

Adama: "Move us right into the CENTER."

Dwalla: WE won't last long in there."

Adama: (Nods his head yes...)

Should we talk about how the episode ends or just go with it becoming a glosious battle and victory for the Colonials???

BANZAI BABY!
