Terminology question

Post by Mgellis »

Quick question...is there a technical/diplomatic/military term for "the straw that broke the camel's back" (e.g., a relatively minor incident or threat that, by itself, should not trigger a larger conflict but which, because of existing tensions or earlier aggression or something else, DOES trigger such a conflict)?

Thanks.

A bit dramatic but 'flashpoint', 'spark', 'fan the flames'. Something like that?

On a more serious stream, 'retaliatory', 'pre-emptive', 'reactionary'

Not sure if there is an official term, I guess it depends on the spin someone wants to put on events.

When I think about it, I suppose "trigger" is the right word. I just didn't know if there was a better term.

(The scenario in question assumes Russia is being mean to Ukraine, again. But this time, because of things like Russian ships harassing Turkish ships, "accidents" where European planes have been shot down by Russian planes over Syria by accident, etc., NATO is fed up and NATO also knows it has to do something or risk becoming irrelevant and Russian aggression that would normally have just been met with a "tsk! tsk! [but we don't want to start a shooting war over this]" from NATO turns into "okay, that's enough...knock it off or this time we WILL do something about it." And Russia ignores them figuring it is just posturing but...wow...no...it isn't...and that's how we started shooting at each other in the Black Sea...)

"War imminent".

Example: US will deploy three CVNs at Japan sea when North Korea conflict reached into absolutely unavoidable of imminent warfare.
