Panther Questions

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Panther Questions

Post by Mehring »

Noticed that in 1943 scenario there are only 2 panther D units- both independent battalions which arrive fully equipped in 41-45 game- only 2 in the pool and IIRC a lower production number than in 41-45 scenario (18 vs 15). That raises the question as to what the 41-45 campaign panther production beginning in Feb 43 represents? About 12 tanks a week which have disappeared by mid summer if the 1943 scenario is right.

Additionally, they tend to be allocated to motorised divisions instead of tank divisions which I suspect is not historical.

The early Panthers underwent two rebuild programs to cure the most obvious faults, in Kursk they used all Panthers that werde deemed combat-ready (after 2nd rebuild). Not easy to simulate this for ealier campaigns.

Maybe early panthers should just never arrive, I thought they were recalled. What about them being sent to motorised divisions. Is that curable?

Just checked several sites which have panther deliveries to Russia as 200 by the time of Kursk, all of which were in 2 battalions as in the 1943 scenario. These battalions arrive at full strength in the 1941-5 campaign, IIRC somewhat less than 200 but not far off. While the game production start date is historical, the Axis is basically getting these 200 tanks twice. I'd suggest having the two battalions arrive as now and delay production start till July 1943.

I'll think about a production gap + forcing factory downsize to 1 upon production start.
All the early Panthers went East, they had just lots of them stuck in the rebuilding programs.

I think 850 'D' models were built up to September 43 so if you went for a July production start and the two battalions arrive full strength, a weekly rate of roughly 50 until the 'A' comes on line might work, or adjusted upwards if the entire run went east.

Will now start in 5/43 with build limit 11, can't do more without using anormal high build limit/expansion values. 842 Panther D had been produced.
