German reinforcement arrivals

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

German reinforcement arrivals

Post by Kursk1943 »

Just a remark: I noticed that in every campaign game the German reinforcements arrive at least two weeks later than they were available at the front historically. I wondered about the late arrivals of 6th and 7th Panzerdivisions for the Stalingrad relief operations and crosschecked with my history books. Then I checked the arrivals of all divisions in 1942 and 1943. They are all 2-4 weeks late. In addition, they arrive in Germany so it takes another 2 weeks till they are at the frontline. Is it on purpose? When needed I can provide the sources of my research.

Hmm, I have the 6/7 Pz arrive in early december/january; this may indeed be too late.

I guess there must be a (gameplay) reason for that, because it sounds really weird.

Short answer is that the departure and arrival dates are usually estimates.

Long answer is there are at least ten thousand or more air and ground units with many of them needing arrival and withdrawal dates. Additionally, each individual scenario and campaign can have different dates for these same units. Exact dates on when these units boarded the trains or were made available for ground operations are difficult to research. Sure, some of the more extensively researched campaigns and popular units (Panzer) are available but generally I do not have access to these exact dates to these thousands of units. I have often spent hours on a single unit trying to find these kinds of exact dates and sometimes I have success but more than often, I do not.

I am working on the revised unit list for WitE 2.0 so if you want to send me suggestions, please feelmfree to do so at treymarshall@gmail.com.

Here is my main source, a German homepage http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... /106ID.htm this example is for the 106. Infanteriedivision. I crosschecked these dates also with my many books and they seem to be valid. I checked it for the 41 and 42 campaigns and also for Uranus and Stalingrad to Berlin. The reinforcements are all late. I'm pretty sure this also applies for the 43 and 44 campaign games. If someone is interested I could provide a list of the real arrivals starting Aug 42 till end of 43 on Monday evening-It took me not more than a few hours to get and check all divisional reinforcements within the mentioned timeframe

I'm working on the scenarios anyway so if you could provide a list who's late I'll check and fix.

Peter, you are more than welcome to send me the list. My email is listed in an earlier thread. I am working on the unit list for WitE 2.0 as we speak so now is a great time to provide this data as I plan on walking through these units again for quality checks.

Lexicon is my most used source as well.

If it is okay for you I will check at least all German divisional and brigade level reinforcements for the whole war in the east and provide a list not later than in 2 weeks.

I also like to add the German names to the SS divisions per editor. Attached you'll find the list.

Skanderbeg, not -berg. An ethnic Albanian unit named after George Castriot.

Thanks for the info - will look into it. Using the bynames for SS units is problematic/impossible without causing side effects.

WitE has an amazing amount of detail which is fun, but much is not terribly relevant to battle outcomes, tactics, and strategies as the game engine is now implemented.

Peter Zimmerman's list is interesting, even if it can't be incorporated into the game. Thanks.

So, whatever can be done will be appreciated in this precinct.

Hmmm... any help for Sovietskis?

I know it is not too much important for the game results one the one hand, but sometimes it may be of some value to have for example the II SS Panzer Corps with three SS Panzergrendadierdivions available two to three weeks earlier than now in Feb 1943. It think it may be more of worth for the history fans like me, not so much for the genuine gamers.
Attached you will find my proposals for the 42-45 campaign game. It's only an add on to my proposals for 41-45, so just one page...
