KB and first turn move bonus

Post by 39battalion »

Looking at a campaign with a December 7 start, with historical first turn set to off and December 7 surprise set to on.

Is it possible to split some CVs from KB to create two carrier TFs, and for both TFs to retain the first turn bonus move ?

Some of the AARs I have seen seem to suggest this is possible, but elsewhere I have seen it mentioned that splitting a TF tagged with the bonus move on the first turn results in one of the TFs losing the move bonus.

Confused about this so any advice would be welcome.

No.
You can retask the bombardment TF to be a second KB by transferring ships into it.

You have limited number of magic-move TFs on the 1st turn, their names are marked with (*). You can redistribute ships among those TFs however you like, just be wary and do not disband TFs occasionally while reshuffling.
Etorofu has 2 of those magic TFs, KB itself and replenishment oilers. So you can have at most 2 magic CV squadrons at first turn. To do it, get part of KB CVs into this replenishment TF (by designating it Escort) and then remove oilers. Be wary that if you send you CVs a long way out, they will need to replenish their fuel somewhere in later turns, so organize and send some replenishment TFs their way.

You could try to edit the scenario but make a copy first.

In stock Scen 1, there are actually 4 magic-move TFs that start at Etorofu:
TF 1 - 6CV+ (Kido Butai)
TF 2 - 2DD/7AO (Replenishment for KB)
TF 140 - AO (Another replenishment)
TF 141 - 2DD (Midway Bombardment TF)

All 4 of these get the magic move bonus, so it is possible to split into as many as 4 CV TFs (but I wouldn't recommend it). I remember a thread where NYGiants describes transferring the Kaga from KB and into the Midway TF, then redirecting it to the SRA. I redirect the replenishment TF to Truk or Kwaj so it is waiting to refuel KB on the way back, without being too exposed (default is a mid-ocean point not too far from KB).
Just when I get the hang of a game, I buy two more... :)

Indeed there are. Heh, I always disbanded/reshuffled 140 and 141, and them happened to be the only 2 TFs in the Empire that are not labelled properly with * for the bonus, but actually have the bonus move.

Not just dangerous against the Allies either. As the Allied forces can (and will) react (ask me how I know lol) depending on where you go. I've played a number of starts as Japan and I have become more and more a fan of using the Dec 8 start. Yes you can do some wild and crazy things, but in the long run none of them will matter much. Its just the way the dark side rolls [:)]

I didn't realize it until I started using Kull's Set-up Spreadsheet, it marks all the magic move TFs.
