Fallout 4

Post by Dorb »

Any folks pumped for Fallout 4 coming out? The others in the series were some of the best single players games I have ever played.(and actually finished)

I'll probably wait a few months for a price drop and patches. No doubt the game will be great, but it will probably also be a buggy mess out the gate, like all previous Bethesda titles. I hope my PC can run it well, the mod community adds so much content to these things.

My AAA gaming money is going to Star Wars Battlefront this month [:D]

I was planning on getting it either on or soon after release, however I have a renewed enthusiasm for Skyrim after cleaning my game up and updating it with some great mods and an ENB.

Will most likely play through some more of Skyrim for 6 months or so, to see how Fallout 4 is released. I believe they will release the Creation Kit for Fallout in February so the game will take the next step once the mod community gets a hold of it. There is no way I could play an unmodded Skyrim so I'm sure Fallout will be the same.

Cheers,

found it or it's type, eye candy but in the end a bit boring, and you always need to upgrade to do it justice as well, and not playing the game of always updating just for the sake of it, as game play doesn't change or evolve much[:(]

so i'll pass and maybe grab it later in a few years if i get bored and need to see and play another of the same[X(]

A definite "Must Buy" for me. [:)] However, I'm buying a new rig to I can enjoy playing it with the highest graphical settings (the minimum GPU is 2 gig's! [X(])

I just bought it. [:D] Unfortunately, with all the hours I am putting in at work I don't know how much I can play it over the next few weeks. [:(]

Same here as I already have New Vegas and basically just bought it to see how the casino's looked and played. (very disappointed here) I have no strong urge to buy anymore content for this type of Fallout. It's not the Fallout I'm used to playing. The first two games in the series were awesome. These are not.

Purchased from Steam, played just under the allowable two hours, and got a refund. For once the 'don't believe the hype' cliche is spot on.

Will wait until it's on sale in Steam & the various patches which are sure to com. Real-life demands & playing Wasteland 2 is already keeping me up late into the night. [:'(]

I have it, and honestly I am thoroughly enjoying it. And since it was pretty much what I was expecting, I'd personally rate it at a 9 out of 10 for me, but...I did not go in with unobtainable expectations as so many people did with the hype. I went in expecting a F3 or FNV type game with improvements and some new 'toys' to play with. Which is pretty much what we got.

F4 was way over-hyped, more by the gaming media and fan base than anything else. And I've learned to take everything the gaming media and fan base says with a large grain of salt. They almost always get it wrong.

Like I say, its a fun game. A lot more challenging than 3 or NV. And I'm having fun playing with the building component. It's almost like playing SimCity: Wasteland. [:D]

Same with me Shark, except I have not bought yet. Waiting for a few patches. I am wanting more of the same and do not mind the graphics. I mean damn we are here on a war game forum where as far as I recall they never have and never will be about graphics and innovation, just more of the same just different time periods.[:)]

How do you feel about VATS not stopping the game but moving in slow motion? I am 46 and really not a fan of the run and gun games and always liked the stop action VATS as in the other two games.

Doesn't really make much of a difference, to be honest. The mistake IMHO was that they didn't just junk the previous approach entirely in favor of dedicated quality FPS mechanics, which would force in meaningful stealth and half-decent enemy AI as well . As is, it's a very uncomfortable compromise. Like before, you can play as an FPS if you want to, but there are so many games that do it much better. Sure, that 'wouldn't be Fallout', but then that's true of junking the skills system and other existing changes forming part of an overall lurch away from the true 'role-play' approach of previous titles towards more of an 'open-world action game'.

I'm fine with the changes to VATS. TBH, in the previous games, I didn't really use it. In F4, I'm finding it VERY useful.

I'm in the same boat, us older guys don't react as well to twitch based games. So F4 is more than enough of that style game for me.

Maybe so, but I'm not really a fan of twitch based FPS combat. Being an older gamer, I just don't have the reaction speed for it. Twitch based shooters can get very irritating for me, simply because I have trouble reacting. Of course, not having the best eyesight doesn't help that at all either.

Shark7, I am intrigued by your comments, as from the negative reviews I read on Steam there are claims that they ruined the classical combat - apparently the map is smaller and it is more like an FPS than a Fallout game. I'm months away from buying it, but I am worried that they've ruined the Fallout experience. But you think it is very similar to the old games in terms of style?

Its is very much like the older games, though perks work differently. Combat is a little tougher to me, but it may just be that I went with a jack of all trades character build.

To start, when building your character, all SPECIAL skills start at 1. You only get 21 points to improve them (which isn't much at all). When you level up, you get a single 'Perk' point. That point can be spent however you like, either choosing a new perk or putting into a SPECIAL skill. This is the major change from classic Fallout. And skills are still there, through the perks (which have multiple levels), just not in the 15-100 system you are used to.

On to combat. It is...intense. I'm routinely getting spanked and I'm only playing on normal. Yes it is not classic fallout in this sense, it is actually challenging, even fighting just open world enemies. The fights are at a faster pace as well, and it is much harder to sneak up on enemies at the lower levels. I've always felt that fallout was a mix of FPS and RPG, and it still has that feel. Stats still matter, its just that the stats are different from what you are used to. You're F3 or NV character build might be considerably weaker at low levels in F4. VATS is far more useful in F4 than it was in F3/NV where I almost never used it. Racking up multiple hits in VATs for the crits is important when facing the more powerful enemies. Also, ammo is a bit more scarce so far for me. That may be because I only have luck at 1. I have actually had to resort to bashing enemies with my weapon because I ran out of ammo.

Enemy AI is way better. Enemies don't just stand in the open and shoot anymore. They move, they hide, they take cover and fire around corners, they try to flank you, and they will use stimpacks. Also, some things like mole-rats, dogs, insects and Feral ghouls don't hide, but they attack in packs. They can be hard to handle in large numbers. I have had as many as 7-8 feral ghouls attack at once. And to make things more interesting, mole rats and rad scorpions pop up out of the ground, so you may not see them until they attack. These AI changes may be causing some or much of the complaints.

The map I don't think is smaller, rather it is more populated with things. You do not have all the open spaces you did in F3 or NV, so it seems smaller. Its kinda like a house, see it with no furniture and its huge, try to fit all your furniture into it, and it suddenly seems too small. F4 has a lot of furniture. [;)]

Overall, I think I did my initial character build all wrong for my playstyle. Like I said before, jack of all trades with the major stat being Intelligence. If I were to start over I think I'd set it up this to work with my sneak/sniper playstyle. Something like this:

S - 1 Only useful for melee and carrying stuff
P - 6 Improves guns and you see enemies sooner
E - 3 Enough to get by
C - 4 Helps with optional dialouges (that might allow you to avoid combat)
I - 7 You level faster with higher intel, very important from my POV
A - 4 Gives you sneak line
L - 2 Better crits/more money/more ammo

This is still not specialized, and I'd probably dump my first few level points into Luck, Endurance and Agility to get those higher faster. But I've got a few hours of gameplay under my belt now, and it has shaped my thinking on stats.

Anyway, all I can say is try it. Its different, but not in a bad way. It plays more like a hybrid FPS honestly, which is how I felt F3 and NV played as well.

They have turned a Great RPG Series into a First Person Shooter Bore..............(even though you can play in 3rd person).
It is much harder to think about doing something than actually doing it!

I've played about 15 hours at the moment and I have to say I think it's superb. It's certainly grabbing me much more than Fallout 3 - it's more immersive imo.

See, there seems to be a very big divide over the two: either it is great or it is becoming another FPS clone.

I always liked Fallout as I found the big open expanse was just like an apocalypse would be, so Shark7 I can tolerate a smaller map if it is busier and as emersive.

That levelling system almost sounds more like a traditional RPG - I liked the old system, but if it works then it would be good. I used to find VATS very useful in the older games, so I'm sure a better AI won't stop me too much. But I'd also seen in the reviews that the AI wasn't good: still charging head first into a stream of gunfire.

From memory, my characters usually get 9 intelligence, low perception but high ability to carry. But all this Fallout 4 is making me want to play it, so I'll be on NV tonight, remembering my character setups.
