So I got myself the game, what now?

Post by towerbooks3192 »

After a shopping spree of war games I had a few cash left. I bought the game along with a maneuver tactics book, all hell let loose and why the allies won. So how should I go about learning the game? If I know my NATO symbols, will I be fine?

Edit: How do I play this game without squinting? I am playing at 1920x1080 resolution and I have to squint. Any advice on learning the game?

Along with everything else in this forum, look here :
tm.asp?m=2231803&mpage=1&key=
and if you get tired of reading see post #27 in that thread for links to some simple videos.

To reduce squinting, change your resolution. I use 1024 x 768.

We keep hearing comments like this, but, not having a 1920x1080 display, can't visualize it. Can you post a screenshot?

There's a large/small icons option somewhere isn't there??

it would probably pay to make sure that is set to large.....which TBH isn't THAT big.....but it is bigger than small!!

These are the images. I don't know how to set the resolution only for the game. I do know how to change the one one for the game but I have been changing my sort of resolution on windows 8.1 and that icon change option because of problems with games such as war in the east

Hola Miguel,

I compiled some tutorial slides that give you an overview of most features of the game, incl. a Tutorial '41 scenario. Feedback appreciated.

Hey Klink, Cheers! How do I open the file? I managed to extract the first one? Other than that, my only other problem is the small texts. I love the unit display on the side but the figures are very hard to see that I have to squint.

Try changing the resolution in the Opart3.ini file that is in your Matrix Games/The Operational Art of War III folder.

WinRAR should do the trick. As for the resolution, ye'ole Lobster replied.

Managed to open it. For some weird reason despite changing Y to resolution change and playing with the resolution, I still have to squint for the texts. I might try it on my Windows 7 PC on my day off.

Ok, so the graphics are full screen. That was what I was wondering about - we've had some reports where they only appear in the upper left corner.

So, what are the physical dimensions of your screen (inches or cm)?

Now that is a question that stumps me. I got this laptop about 2 years ago. I am pretty sure it isnt the big 17 inch alienware and I reckon it is the 13 or 14 inch ones they got. my only problem are the texts but the graphics are fine.

You can play around with the text size. Never did it meself so I don't know how it will affect the different windows or what anything will look like. Be sure you back up the original first. Opart 3 Fonts.ini has text color, size, etc. Same place as the last .ini file was located.

Well, assuming it is 14", that makes your Situation Report about 4.4" in width (based upon the screen shot you referenced). On my screen, my Situation Report is about 5.6". That's about 25% bigger. That doesn't seem like all that much difference, but maybe it is. Clearly, they're making the dpi greater than before and that is affecting the game.

For now, the only option is the one Lobster offered - turn on the "Change Screen Resolution" option in the .ini file. You might try that just to see what you think.

I tested it on my windows 7 PC. Same resolution but 24 inch monitor. It helps a lot but sadly I don't wanna be stuck in my office until after my exams. Changing stuff works on my PC but not on my windows 8.1 laptop. It is very weird.

You might try upgrading your 8.1 laptop to 10. I use that on my laptop and have no problems running the game. I changed SetScreenResolution= to Y and left the X at 800 and Y at 600 and it showed up on the screen exactly that way. On my 14 inch laptop it's a square with room at the sides.

You really should upgrad to Window$ 10. It's free and is a much, much better OS than 8.1 is. I upgraded all of may machines. The desktop from 7 to 10. My laptop for 8.1 to 10. My wife's from 7 to 10.
Of course all computers are different and your user experience may vary.

Not that this does you any good but on my laptop the text is kinda small too but I use it on a desk so I don't have it all that far from my eyes. If I put it on my lap thingy and tried tp play the game in my easy chair I'd have problems seeing text in native resolution too. I'm 66 and a half and old age does things to your eyeballs. [:D]

Come to think of it if I played it on my easy chair I'd hook it up to the big screen and have no problems seeing anything. If my wife let me that is.
