Does the AI sweep?

Post by jwolf »

Question is as the title says. I am playing an Allied campaign against the Japanese AI (hard difficulty). Admittedly, I'm not very far into the game yet, just late December 1941. The AI appears to be very aggressive with its air campaign; as far as I can tell, any bombing mission that can plausibly be conducted is attempted. But no sweeps. It's true that a few bombing missions had disproportionate numbers of escorts -- for example, 30 fighters and only 3 bombers -- so they amount to sweep missions although they aren't formally set up that way.

I am also playing against AI and can tell you that it DOES indeed conduct sweeps. However they are not independent of bombing attacks.

What I have seen is a sweep coming in separate of the bombing attack. Then before the event is completed the bombers show up behind the fighters and it continues with a bombing operation.

Then before the event is completed the bombers show up behind the fighters...

In game, is this shown as one raid or multiple raids?

The AI almost always sweeps the PI on turn one. Almost always after the bombers have bombed.

After turn one where it is likely scripted I have never seen the AI sweep in dozens of games.

I have seen, many times, what the poster above described as a large group of fighters arriving and then after a round of combat the bombers appear out of nowhere for the second round.

I don't think this is a sweep. I have always interpreted it as a glitch in the combat replay as bombers are never engaged until the second round even if they have no fighter escorts.

Ever notice that the game engine executes a first round even if there are no escorting fighters and your interceptors don't start engaging the bombers until the second round?

A sweep would execute as an independent mission, not combined in with a bombing mission.

The Allied AI sweeps not very frequently and only concurrently with bombing missions.

Never seen a sweep and have not seen that in the AI scripts either.

However, do not recall a dev ever having commented on this either. Maybe Alfred will stop in and search for us ....
