What's the large yellow symbol?

It's the standard symbol for a biohazard. Must've been a plague there.

Cauldyth is correct, that is the plague/disease symbol. That particular colony
currently has a plague or disease running rampant (Genetic Scrambling Disease,
Merturov Plague, etc.).

Shields are useless in "The Briar Patch"...
