That Memo Line

Post by Bullwinkle58 »

When I named a TF "Schlep North" today (on that memo line in the upper left side of the TF screen) it made me wonder what players use that line for.

What's your best name in your current game?

Mine are normally what its supposed to do or what it is carrying. I wish there was similar for ground units.

Often its 'Going for repairs' or 'Sweeping up remnants' or 'Decoys"

At the start as Allied its often been the type of ships as I try to group them to send them to the right place for the right task

For air units would be nice too. Sometimes I forget where a fighter unit is planning to end its leapfrogging trip.

I use the memo field a lot for CS convoys. I have a naming system I use so I can tell at a glance that it is a CS convoy and what its route and commodity is.

+1

asked Michael a long time ago to add it to other units, but issue is no space. Simply a layout issue ...

What's your best name in your current game?

This is where the juvenile in me comes to the fore.

I can't help myself.

I might as well be fourteen and hiding things from my parents.

My TF 34, a.k.a. "Kate Upton's T*ts," just left Pearl.

My bombardment TFs that sneak in at night to deliver 'presents' are named "Santa Claus".

I rename my CVTF with the CV name/s, makes it easier to pick through them.

Single Combat ships - usually name and pennant/Hull number - like USS Barb (SS-220) or HMS Warspite (03) or Hr.Ms. Tjerk Hiddes (G16)
Single Cargo/troop ships - USS Zeilin (AP-3), RMS Queen Mary, USAT Klipfontein, SS James B. Stephens, etc...

Important Convoys - either by leading convoy escort like "HMS Caledon tankers" or destination/purpose like "SoPac Troops" or by unit carried like "2nd Marine Regiment"
Task Forces - Surface combat usually by TFXX designation or TFXX.X designation according to fleet assignment (3rd/5th/7th) or "Force C", "Force D" etc for the brits
Carriers - usually by TF designation with carrier name (if single carrier TF) like "TF38 (Enterprise)"

I tend to name my combat TFs by what they are such as USN BatDiv 1 or RAAN CruDiv 1.

For transport TFs I name them by destination such as Brisbane Bound or Suva Bound.
This is a big help for convoys out of Cristobal as I always send them to Balboa before sending them on to the map.
I discovered a long time ago that it takes one turn to move through the canal manually, but if you send a TF from Cristobal to the map it adds 2-3 days to the entry time compared to sending it from Balboa to the map.
Reducing the transit time through the canal by manually moving ads a huge degree of micromanagement and naming the convoys for where they are bound helps to keep me from sending them to the wrong place from Balboa.

That's the spirit! Reject the pale, limp attempts at actual use, actual utility, and revel in TITS! [:'(]

I usually use the line as intended ("Wake Primary", "Wake Secondary", "Wake Arty", "Wake Extra Stuff", "Wake Even More Stuff"), but once in a while some whimsy is needed on the deep blue.

I once had a (very) early war ASW TF called "The Dumbasses." It helped. A little.

OK, my next bombardment TF is going to be "Guilty Husbands."

In my games:
For combat TF, I put the name of the commander and the typical ship assignment: Halsey Carriers, Brown Cruisers
ships will come in and out, but these TFs would never disband

Invasion TFs will sometimes have its intended destination and TF content: "4th Div - Rangoon", or "ART Pt Blair"

CS TFs will have some code with resource type and origin and destination: "R PArth- Fukuoka"

Submarines will always have its name: "Perch"

Regular cargo or transport TFs are unnamed, unless there is something I need to remember: "change to Amph, for Noumea"

Never rename my TFs. Frankly, I am just too "damned brilliant" and can just go from memory....

I do enjoy renaming the ships that I can. This campaign I have gone for serpents. For my carriers its USS Rattlesnake, Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Sidewinder and so on.

I am the Holy Roman Emperor and am above grammar.

I wish that we could rename more of them, although naming an Essex class CV "Yorktown" for a 3rd time may be depressing for some.

I joked with my opponent that I called my last Bombardment TF "Local Constabulary" because the locals at his base were making too much noise...

You left out "Coral Snake" (for any warship TF headed for the Coral Sea.

I've been reading too many of Mandrake's AARs. I have several location X to Y "suppry" TFs so named.

My one big fuel/oil convoy from Singers to Home Islands proudly bears the name "PQ17"

Edit: I also specifically name all TFs where I appoint TF commander using PPs so that I not disband them accidentally. Sometimes noting his Naval skill in the name so I can have a quick overview for potential posts if good commander becomes available.

CardDiv, BatDiv, CruDiv, DesDiv.

Region Fleet TF's for example can have a CruDiv or a Desdiv permanently attached can be named Desdiv 3Fleet, a tanker TF, cargo TF, xAP 3rdFleet etc.

Then i have the Harbor/BaseForce TF's usually local minesweeping, SC, eventually a PT TF and even Tanker or Cargo TF if warrants. So 1BF SC, are the subchasers of 1st Base Force. If it moves they go too.

Invasion forces have usually their destiny.

Interesting discussion. As I never use the memo line at all [X(]

Probably because I just hate typing :)

Don't do enough with this, but I do like renaming the ships. CVs usually related to Revolutionary War, CA/CL places I have lived, DDs relatives/friends that have passed.
