New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
OK,
Here is another big one. Should give you A2A gurus a run for your $$. This one has 2 CVBG's pushing north to gain air superiority over Iceland. So far it is NATO only but I'm looking at fixing it so both sides can play.
As always, your comments and critiques are most welcome and help me make these better.
One more small one, one medium and then into the 10 series – cannot imagine that once upon a time I though all this could be in one scenario…[8|]
B
Ver 1.1 10 Nov, 2015:
-Sov subs are now set to Auto-evade
-Cleaned up the Ref Points
-Added point events for sinking Sov subs
-Fixed the point event for sinking of a US sub
-Adjusted EMCON settings and added some Lua events to add some depth
-Adjusted the CAPs and some other defences to make them a tad more challenging.
As always I invite your comments and suggestions. Thanks a bunch for the ones above.

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
Plans made, courses laid in, CAP and ELINT patrols spread out, and one reckless Sierra destroyed. Now the long wait through the night, monitoring the patrol paths of the Badgers, Mainstays, and Cubs, and cursing the limitations which prevent me from taking them down. Wait until tomorrow?? No action north of 65º??? GAAAAHHHHH! [:@] I know I could bite off some of those juicy jammers and ELINT planes right now if it wasn't for those damned orders saying don't. All those valuable vulnerable support planes north of Iceland, just out of reach by regulations. I can't take it! [:D]
RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
Well you know the maxims of military C2:
-Subordinate HQs are lazy [X(]
-Flank HQs are nothing but a sponge on resources;[:-] and
-Higher HQ's are all messed up and don't know what they're doing [:D]
I'm sure you'll have your chance...[8D]

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
Gunner....you sneaky....I had a sub slip in and sink a Perry in the Ike group, a little while later a large strike of Fencers came at me.[X(] I was able to fend off that attack. Worried about a backfire strike now.
I somewhat disobeyed orders [:-] and sent a few flights of f-14's above 62* to see what would happen. OMG!!! OK, back down to wait now for everything to be ready. Its looking to be one hell of a fight.
Good scenario, as always.
Going back in...this isnt going to be easy!

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
i have only just started this... checking my assets.. organizing my groups and patrol aeras.. etc etc...
the only thing ive noticed so far was the ASW mission patrol areas for the vinson group were off axis and a little helter skelter....
the briefing is very through and somewhat complex... and i am a simple man... however i am assuming this mission is simply about dominating the battle space for the following strike and assault missions... to be coming soon in the SON OF NORTHERN FURRY and THE RETURN OF NORTHERN FURRY TWO.... etc etc.....

you need to check all your reference points foe relativity or not.... i personally do not like my barcap points to be rotating as they are effected by menuver.... group asw is good to rotate though....

Christ, I just had my first go at this and my response is OMG!!!
Gunner, you really are a sadist you know. I am literally running out of air to air missiles and still more WP AC keep popping up from those damn bases
Out of desperation I just launched 200 TLAMs at the SAMs, but I have no idea how many will get through the CAP...
looks like I will have to replay this one a few times before I finally figure out how to beat the system....
Another excellent scenario by your hand!!
W.
p.s.
Next time around I will load all my fighters for bear and go and have myself a truly epic furball.

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
The quiet night continues... Things are relatively still on the big ships. ESM operators stare at their glowing screens, continuing to monitor enemy patrol patterns, while fighter pilots shift restlessly in their bunks and try futilely to get some sleep before the big day.
But under the waves, the San Juan, cruising at 20 kts towards the carrier groups, has a direct path submerged contact in the layer. Slow to 5 kts! SSN for sure, but what type? Has it seen us? Can we wait for aircraft to deal with it safely? The San Juan turns west, then east, and the contact changes course to intercept each time. We've been had! Two Mk 48s spread shot BOL, low speed at kinematic range, then duck under the layer and turn to run at flank in case he's already launched. Hopefully he'll evade, get pushed away, and lose us while he's running. Then we can break contact, get stealthy, and let the aircraft deal with it. But it never comes to that. The SSN doesn't evade, and one of our Mk48s solves the problem for us. Run a little longer, cut speed, check baffles, then up into the layer and course change back towards the carrier group.
The night continues...

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
Busy night for San Juan...
CZ contact NNW! The San Juan cuts back to creep again, and the contact firms up rapidly. 1st CZ, under the layer, definitely an SSN, cruising on a course towards our position at the end of our speed run. Looks like he heard us charging around at flank speed in the deep sound channel and is coming to investigate. This time there is time and clearance enough to wait for the aircraft, and a pair of S-3s work the contact, which turns out to be an older Victor I. It may be old, but it's tough, and its decoys work well enough that it takes 4 torps to sink it.
Maybe I should try deliberately making noise with one sub to draw enemy subs towards a line of stealthy ones? Risky... Hmmm....
(Edit: none of the three subs I've met so far have tried to evade and outrun the torps, as far as I can tell, although they must have heard them. Maybe turn auto-evasion isn't turned on?)

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
OK...I've timed my attack waves and have a tarp bird up. Spotted some SA20's and getting some more unIDed emissions also. Timing my TLAMs to come in at the same time as my 2nd wave and TALD birds get in a good distance. Notice I have a few aces. I'm sending out in groups of 3 and trying to keep an ace in each group. The tip of using the 18's in low with the AMRAAM missiles seems to be working with 14's as top cover. Wish I would have set the WRA on the Phoenix to fire at only 4 gen fighters. Then maybe I wouldn't have lost an ace 18, also lost another 18 also. Both to Flankers.
I've noticed that my AO's. have a nice supply and trying to UNREP but I can't get it to. Do the lockers have to be empty before it will fill them back up? Any tips on using UREP I'm going to need them.[:(]
Also my TARP bird spotted a sub surfaced I think and a few more at periscope found by radars. Was this supposed to happen?
Great fun but have to go to sleep[:)]. Just had the wife say "it's midnight and your still playing that damned game!!!"
That's not the first time she has said this playing your scenario's. [:D]

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
Glad your enjoying it guys. Will need to check the subs, they should not be surfaced, and I'll check the 'auto evasion' setting as well.
I generally set the missions up as an aid because there are a lot of things going on and feel that it's unrealistic for the CV's to be heading in harms way without an aircraft in the air - but if you don't like the starting mission set up, best to delete them and set them up the way you like.
Wild_Willie will be getting a call from the Admiral[:D]. Your limit was 50 TLAMs[X(]. I put those bits in to try and paint a thread of the mission to mission requirements in the ongoing campaign play, they have no real effect or meaning in the game, just flavour. I need to experiment a bit with the campaign functionality in Northern Inferno, might be able to actually link the scenarios to make ammo expenditure carry over from one to the next.
Loaded up the AOE's with a bunch of A2A munitions. Did not test that function in this game but it has worked reasonably well in other scenarios (NF9.1) - if you select the CV, in unit mode, go to the unit menu and select UNREP if possible. The AOE should close with and start unloading the munitions onto the CV.
This one, and the next few, are not pushover type scenarios, they are meant to be tough. In the campaign they represent the 'Midway', Al Elman', or 'Stalingrad' point in the story so need to be desperate for both sides. From a game point though, if they are too tough I'll need to dial them back a bit, please let me know.
Thanks again guy and have fun

i agree with this.... it is so much more plausible to have basic doctrine missions are up at the start... and i usually approve of your disposition and composition.. and only make some changes in detail to my liking....
however your mission reference points were difficult to work with in this one... some were rotating... some were not.. and sharing reference points with different mission was confusing... when i altered coarse at the beginning to bring the two cvbgs closer for mutual support... the patrol areas got all ahoo.. and took some time to sort out....

oh thank you.... i didnt know how to do this... i thought it was automatic if in close proximity...
playing this now....

RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
A quick question about the orders: are we required to detach the AOEs and send them home at 0300Z on the 22nd? This would be before the main push starts, so we'd be sending away the AOEs while they're still mostly full, and then desperately needing them only a few hours later.
RE: New Scenario for testing NF9.5 Here Comes the Cavalry
Andrew
No, that must be an error in the brief and I'll fix that, they are yours for the full scenario. The only time you’re supposed to detach the AOEs is if you go above 60*, so you should really think about that before heading too far north. They are meant to stay with you for the full scenario and then post scenario (while the Aardvarks are smacking Kef in Scenario 10) a full 'out of game' replen will happen and they will head south. Then in a couple more scenarios, cannot recall which one, you link up with a new batch of AO's and carry on the fight. Of course you have to keep them all protected!
I'll scrub the timeline again, it’s easy to get myself confused and I have 'the spreadsheet from H#$l' to try and keep my timeline straight. Thanks for pointing that out.

andrew.... darn... i think your right.... i have been doing unrep with both groups... i hope its working.... there will probable be a special event message... gunner is pretty good about that.... but im with you... i dont want to send my aoes off at 0300z....
as i am anticipating a strong response from red force (and knowing gunner workings a little)... i have been staying south bringing my groups closer together... compressing the length of my front.. waiting for a large portion of am aircraft to be ready.. as to have aggressive sustained presence.... i have noticed there have been no red sorties to the south and i believe i am not located... red posture is appears to be very defensive.... so i suspect a trigger when i go north of 62N.... something like hitting a bees nest with a stick...
ill find out soon as its zulz 23;04 and about time to go kick ass....
