Russians in Syria

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

@katukov: Missile model also implies missile age. And that can go to malfunction rate. And the article does not say who's stocks the missiles come from. Just that the Saudis are delivering. So, if they are old, another good question is "Who has maintained them?"

This is obviously a propaganda message directed as much to Mr Putin, as to the international audience.

Fox News and the Miamis Institute for Cuban?? I rather read RTs propaganda, thats for sure! [:D]

"White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Thursday the U.S. government had seen no evidence to indicate the reports were true."

Cuba denies it has sent troops to Syria to help Assad

HAVANA

The Cuban government on Saturday denied what it called an "irresponsible and unfounded" report that it had sent troops to Syria in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Foreign ministry official Gerardo Penalver "categorically denies and refutes the irresponsible and unfounded information regarding the supposed presence of Cuban troops in the Syrian Arab Republic," a government statement said.

The University of Miami's Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies on Tuesday issued what it called an unconfirmed report from an unspecified source that Cuban troops had been spotted in Syria "in support of Syria’s dictator Assad and Russian involvement in that country."

Fox News echoed the institute's report on Wednesday, citing an unnamed U.S. official who "confirmed" it. The story then circulated in social media.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Thursday the U.S. government had seen no evidence to indicate the reports were true.

Cuba sent troops to Africa in support of leftist governments in Angola and Ethiopia in the 1970s and 1980s but has long since disengaged from overseas military ventures.

In the past year it has instead reached detente with the United States, restoring diplomatic ties with its former Cold War foe after a break of 54 years.

Now that seems the US is arming the supposed "moderate" rebels...I just hope the lessons with Taleban and 9-11 were learnt...considering how crap US international politics have been, this scares me a lot, specially when Uncle Sam and his pals try to fix things in Middle East..

(...) The U.S. is also criticizing Russia for hitting the "wrong targets,” implying the moderate rebel groups opposed to Assad. However, Washington is avoiding naming these "moderate" groups. Representatives of the Pentagon and the White House do not like to answer questions about whether the U.S.-led coalition is carrying out strikes against such formations as that very same Jabhat al-Nusra (which, in turn sometimes clashes with ISIS) or Ahrar Al-Sham – also nothing short of a terrorist group, which is part of the Islamic Front coalition, or the Army of Islam, which gained notoriety, in particular, for an ISIS-like massacre in the industrial town of Adra, near Damascus – because the U.S.-led coalition does not carry out such strikes.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Front, just like the Army of Islam, is hatching plans for building an Islamic state in Syria under Sharia law and enjoys the support of the Saudis. They can only be considered "moderate" at a stretch. The Syria Revolutionaries Front, another Islamist organization that recently claimed to be seen as "moderate," is close to the Islamic Front. However, before being recognized as "moderate," it made an alliance with ISIS.

Most often when the West talks of "moderate" groups it is referring to the Free Syrian Army (FSA), created at the beginning of the war with the aim of opposing Assad by officers who had deserted from the government army. However, the FSA, which has always featured a variety of small groups, Islamist ones among them, was from the very start strongly influenced by the ideology of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, which enjoyed the covert support of the Turkish government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Since the spring of this year, the FSA has effectively disintegrated as a combat structure. However, many small and independent combat local groups operate under its "umbrella," including those entering into tactical alliances with the Islamists, even from ISIS. Those who are arming these groups should take into account the tendency of militants to cross from one structure to another and understand that these weapons may end up in hands of ISIS (...).

Someone watched all those videos with the TOW launches and here's some statistics.

32 were launched against the tanks. 10 without any doubt destroyed the tank ( 31% ), 9 missed ( 28% ) and 13 hit the tank but a kill cannot be confirmed ( 40 % ). In those cases the tank was probably damaged/immobilized. Of course some of those were actually kills, but it's also worth keeping in mind, that the rebels don't post online some portion of the misses. This statistics is interesting from the point of view of RS, because Syrian forces field vintage T-55, T-62, T-72A/M models. It seems that the ATGMs manage to score a certain kill in about 30-40% of the cases.

Chechen-born Abu Bakr al-Shishani, leader of the Ahrar ash-Sham terrorist group, was reportedly killed in a Russian airstrike.

"A group of militants, including the leader of Jaish al-Sham terrorist group, Chechen native Abu Bakr al-Shishani, was eliminated on October 14 as a result of a Russian airstrike in the Homs province," the source said.

Earlier today SANA, Syria’s national news agency, reported that the Syrian army had destroyed another leader of Ahrar ash-Sham, sheikh Omar Mustafa al-Khodr and his top aide Khaled Abu Anas.

Ahrar ash-Sham is the second largest terrorist group within the Jaish al-Fatah movement after the al-Nusra Front. In the spring of 2015, it was one of the militant groups which took over Ariha, Idlib, and Jisr al-Shughur in Syria's northwest, carrying out mass executions of locals.

Lets have hope for that...hard to imagine those ISIS lunatics capitulating...

The actions of the Russian Air Force in Syria are very effective, making it possible that soon ISIL will capitulate and the Syrian refugees will be able to return home, according to a political analyst at George Washington University.

Russian Military Forum: Russia in the Middle East
After being virtually shut out of the region for many years, Russia has lately increased its influence by capitalizing on recent developments, such as the Arab Spring, the Syrian crisis and the Iran nuclear accord. This has allowed Russia to enhance relations and expand military-to-military ties with various states in the region. But Russia’s objectives and strategy for the region remain unclear. Long-time Russia experts Michael Kofman and Stephen Blank will explore these developments in greater detail, including their implications for the region, and for the U.S. more generally.
