Possible to mod the mouse pointers?

Post by HeinzHarald »

Was thinking of modding the mouse pointers slightly to make them more visible, but I can't seem to find any graphics file for them.

They are embedded in the exe files, if you get a resource hacker, like Reshack, and open it, there is a folder for cursors. For anyone else to use them they would need the modded exe's. The only one that doesn't have them in it is the org exe.

I was thinking the same thing. I sometimes find the mouse pointer hard to see.

Thanks. That was easy enough. Tried playing around with color but decided for my first attempt to basically just add black. Not too bad I think.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to upload the edited main exe of the game, if anyone else is interested to check it out. Let me know.

Hello HeinzHarald, glad you were able to sort the mouse pointer out. As for modified executables, let us not share them in this forum.

Yeah, I felt the same way so I figured you wouldn't approve. But at least I can share the cursor files I created (see attachment below).

Hex edit at your own risk though, obviously.

Any chance that darkening, or somehow making the cursor more visible, could be done in-house, maybe for the next patch?

This one item is my greatest annoyance with any JT game... [:@] I curse this every time I play CS, or PzC, or any of the other JT games I own. I'm not much on adapting .exe files on my own; Dad told me many, many years ago, "If you don't know what you're doing, don't #@&% with it!". Good advice, and often rued when not heeded. [:-]

I would also support some kind of easier way to increase the visibility of the cursor, I lose it really easily on these desert maps.

So, I decided I wanted to try colored cursors. This meant I had to make them larger in order to get enough contrast and not have them look like fat blobs. It wasn't easy, it is quite hard to scale pixel art, but in the end I'm very pleased with the results.

The cursors do look a bit large in anything but the two closest zoom levels, but they are perfectly usable in all of them (screenshot not indicative of size and quality).

And here I thought it was just me. Old age effects. So I think there would be great appreciation to have the pointers easier to see as a baseline change. I'm not afraid to hex edit a file (backup early and often) after 35 years in IT, but it shouldn't have to be done. Changing exe files means problems with every upgrade.
I'm trying to think, but nothing happens!
