Couple start-up questions

Post by 76mm »

A couple of start up questions:

1) Is there a way to turn off the music that plays when the game starts up? I have turned off background music within the scenarios, but that did not seem to affect the music on startup.

2) I can't get the hexes to show...I see the menu option for viewing hex outlines (Ctl-X) but it doesn't seem to have any effect?

I have Win7 and an Nvidia GTX 580 videocard.

1). No, not really. xback01.ogg is the one that plays during the main menus. Also during the game play at times. You can change the file though. For details see HERE

2) Yes. It is bit confusing but here's the deal. Both Contours and Hex Grid are on by default. They don't show at the same time though, Contours having the priority. Turning Contours OFF <c> leaves the Hex Grid visible. You can then turn that OFF too <ctrl-x>

Edit: so just to see the Hex Grid just turn Contours OFF

Thanks. One more minor thing--in several of the scenarios that I've opened up, the command report on the first turn shows up as a black box.

Sure. Re the black box: Which scenario are those? Please name a few, I'll have a look

It just happened with High Noon; the others I can't remember, some of these Middle Eastern names throw me for a loop. I should clarify that I've probably opened up about 5-6 scenarios to take a look at them, and the black box appeared in 2 or three of them. The Command Report appears normally after the first turn.

Also, I really look forward to the addition of map zoom via mouse scroll.

Tourny Set A01 - High Noon. As Israelis, upon opening the game, I get a "6 Air strikes remaining" Command Report. You don't see that?

Ending the Israeli turn immediately, I get a "6 Air strikes remaining + 1 HQ out of supply" Command Report for Side B.

Nope, for the first turn as Israeli all I got was a solid black box; I closed it with the x in the top right corner. After the first turn, I got the normal message.

Frankly it is a fairly long list, but no other games or visual-intensive programs (but potentially memory-intensive). Given this game's vintage, however, I would have hoped for a smallish(?) memory footprint?

It does use a fair amount of RAM.

If you try running out with a few of the programs closed, you should find it functioning as designed.

I ran into the same issue when I had ArcGIS, CorelDRAW X7 and couple other mapping related software products open. Oddly enough, it was just with the introductory dialog, everything was fine.

I have Win7. typically have Windows Explorer open, Corel PSP X7, Winmail, Google Chrome with 19 tabs open, anywhere from 3-4 notepads with various platoon files open, and runs no problem?!

OK, will try that. Not a huge deal, as long as you're not playing competitively, but I did want to mention it.

Ah, OK, so other's had that too. When I did the auto-testing with three or four game processes at the same time, I kept my eye on the RAM levels each process was using. They were at 330 MBish at most. How much RAM do you guys have?

I've got 8 GB, Win7, 64bit.

I do have quite a few programs open, including Visual Studio, SQL Server Management Studio, Excel, Evernote, and a few others, so I might be pushing it a bit.

Roger. Yes, I did not have a similar load. I can imagine the Dev Environment you've got uses quite a lot of RAM...
