71st anniversary of the battle of Arnhem

Post by zakblood »

Arnhem Commemorative Special: 17th Sept 1944 from Maj Tolers Diary:

‘The great day dawns. It is a lovely day, fine and clear with the sun shining with an autumn brightness. Take-off is at 10:40 hours. I drive down to the tow path and chat with Jimmy and Dusty who are flying together. Staff Sergeant Baldwin is No. 2 I tell him jokingly to keep in formation on the landing.

The landing is OK and well short of the overshoot boundary. I take off flap to run on. Half way across the LZ we run into soft plough and this pulls us up more rapidly than I expected - but it does not matter. We come to rest and undoing my straps I follow Shackleton out and lie panting on the ground hugging my Sten gun.

Apparently there were a few Jerries round the DZ when they landed and shots were fired, but they gave up as soon as the Independents opened up on them. We see them now - a disconsolate lot and the first enemy prisoners we are to meet.’

To the permanent memory of our Airborne Forces.....who served and paid the highest price in the Battle of Arnhem which began 71 years ago .......We remember those that served and those that lost.
