RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
The counter measures are automatically deployed and if you look at the results screen above you can see the Russians released a few in their evasions. But I was watching the Hartford and she never released any. My conclusion is the Russian torpedoes never got close enough, probably because they never had a good lock on my position.

RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
Fair enough. Post #7 is the only shot showing a Russian torpedo with your sub in the "range" of its HF sonar. What is the range for counter-measure deployment typically? Can I release manually in game?
Thanks.
Thanks.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
Just reviewed the recording at the point of Post#7 - the torpedo could be anywhere within the area enclosed by the yellow triangle. Because the torpedo is in the baffles/aft of the propellers it is hard to get an exact fix. The furthest point of the triangle is 2.85nm/approx. 5500 yards. Using the builtin range/bearing tool to determine the distance.
Moving forward approximately 4 secs (see below image) the closest estimated position of the enemy torpedo is moved back to approximately 1.6nm/3000yards. Identifying the exact location of a torpedo directly aft thru the propellers is extremely hard. You also again see the power of the recording functionality to review/reconstruct what happened during the play through.
Therefore there is a good chance the torpedo did not actually get close enough to trigger the automatic deployment of counter measures.
As for manually firing counter measures - I have not found a way to do that but that doesn't mean its not possible. Sunburn?

All weapon countermeasures are handled automatically the crew during weapon endgame.
There is a special decoy category (mobile ones like MOSS and MG-74 Korund) which, like their air-launched counterparts (TALD, Sampson etc.) can be launched on player command in order to offer an additional target to the enemy.

Reading this AAR brings back memories of my playing Microprose's Red Storm Rising. I was so hooked on that game for so long.
I'm really looking forward to this game's release.

Can you steer the wire guided torps? Do the wires get fouled/cut if you go high speed or high turn rate? Or am I going to deep in the micro management of things? [:D]

If the torps have wire guidance you can manually drive them around, and if the wire guidance is two-way (not a given) you can use them as offboard sonars.
Cutting the wire is not yet implemented but we're aware of it and we want it [:D]

This reminds me a lot of RSR, Great job. I have a question thought. What is the AI doctrine for the SSBN. Shouldn't it goes into evasion/escape mode once it detect an engagement from the escort with a unknown contact? I would think that the SSBN would be long gone after you dealt with the 2 escorts.

RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
I would have to review the recording to be sure - but at this point in the scenario I had lost contact w/the Victor III and shifted back to a general search in the basic direction of the last contact. If I were the SSBN I would try to slink away - slow speed/quiet - so its possible she had not cleared the area yet, and my slow above/below layer search just detected her.
As for actual programmed behavior in the simulation - Sunburn would have to comment on that...

RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
I was actually wondering about the default AI setting for varies units. Like SSN would have a aggressive AI while SSBN would have a more passive/avoidance AI.
RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
The game has a number of behaviors that could be assigned.
This game really is a huge sandbox for scenarios editors. We expect many of our updates to be generated from the feedback we get from them.

RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
Finally got to track some subs in "trapped under ice". Sadly by the time teh mission finished I onyl got the Sierra, Akula and Victor..
When can we get the ability to review the mission with all units visible??!

RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
Hi Asparagin, when you finished scenario, you can save it and load it in the Scenario editor. There you can switch between sides and look where the units are.

Hi mikkey,
I'll give a try. Thank you.

RE: Beta AAR - Trapped Under Ice
Nice...
I've played this one twice now, mostly managing the sub myself rather than letting the mission run.
I think I got lucky as on each occasion I got a single sub surface contact that turned out to be the Typhoon.
On both occasions I got the kill and safely exited the area..
Having read this AAR I'm going to run it again and see if I can get into a knife fight with the SSN's!
