Cratered hexagon

What is the effect of a cratered hexagon in the game ? Does it slow the units ? Does it provide shelters ?
Could really the civil war artillery create craters in the ground ?

Well, some Civil War siege artillery could probably make rather nice-sized holes in the ground. For example, a gun used at Petersburg with the colorful name "The Dictator" sounds like it might have achieved that: http://civilwarwiki.net/wiki/The_Dictator_Mortar. But regular anti-personnel artillery certainly would have been unable to, especially when firing grape cluster.

Still, in BAB what you are calling craters are just graphics meant to show that an area has been shot up. They do not provide cover, and probably don't impede movement. (At least if they do, Eric never mentioned this to me, and it would be a small number of Movement Points. But this can be checked easily enough by clicking on units near such hexes and seeing if there is an obvious difference between these hexes and similar ones.)

Mostly it indicates a hex you don't want your regiment in because somebody's artillery has it in their sights in a serious way. [:D]

The artillery craters are just cosmetic.
