Did you really think I'd stop at One effort-post?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Thanks guys for all the nice words, I appreciate the support. [:)]

I have a Win7 64 bit laptop what are the best settings to get it to look the best it can. Resolution, compatibility, any other helpful settings. I'm getting some visual oddities and its a bit blurry, any help appreciated.

Try this **budd**. Change the extension to .zip, then Unzip and drop these two files in the SPWaW root. They seem to help with the colours.

A somewhat more drastic move would be to upgrade to Win 10.

cheers

Guys, I haven't experienced anything like that.

Just exercising some due diligence here ...... what ya running for AV? any other services running in the background?
Are you running mech.exe in any sort of compatibility mode?
Have you tried changing that?

Have you tried DXWnd?
Would you like to?
ORIGINAL: Some review of the internet
Originally developed as a tool for running fullscreen games in windowed mode, DXWnd has evolved into a suite of compatibility tools and fixes for old games. The program is regularly updated and new fixes are added all of the time. Using DXWnd is the only way to run some games on more modern versions of Windows.

I got more info on DXWnd if you would like.
I have been using it for over a year now.

I see no option to change the Mech compatability mode on your win 8 mech
I'm on WIN 10 BTW
game runs fine other than we cannot load a scenario in the editor
The Generals editon Scen editor opens fine, as it does on my previous ENH FR install
so Its gotta be something else going on

what is DX wnd?

No more random crashes for me after using DxWnd. I made a post about it here:
fb.asp?m=3811621

If the game still crashes even with DxWnd then it might be a problem with the sounds.
To test if it is a sound issue or not try to run the game with all sounds disabled from the preferances:
Soundtrack -> OFF
Unit sound fx -> OFF
weather & battle sound fx -> OFF
terrain sound fx -> OFF

Edit:
I have not tested this new version by Major Mess. The version I am running is a standard SPWAW install (version 4.5) and it runs fine on my win7 machine.

Yes I had too Generals Edition and Enhanced FR before this and they worked ok in every level. Maybe something strange happened after this new version and "basic" SPWAW?

Major....
OK I tried this
I copied the SCEN folder from your install and placed it into the Generals edition, and My previous FR install, after cutting the 'old" scen folder out and placing it elsewhere, and I now get the same crash, which I wasn't before...
I also removed your SCEN folder temporarily, and placed the "stock" SCEN folder in your install, and the editor now loads fine, so theres something going on in that SCEN folder
I see some of the Scen CMT files have new longer names, with C+C 2P, not sure yet, but I'd guess that's it

I think I know what is causing that crash. You can not edit the scenario name files ".cmt" with notepad in Windows. If you do the game will crash when you go into the editor screen. You have to rename the scenarios ingame from the editor screen. I think there was also a separate program that allowed you to edit the Steel Panthers scenario names properly from Windows but I can't remember what it was called.

Edit:
So basicaly to fix this you would need to copy back all the original .cmt files.

Note that it takes just one improperly edited .cmt file in the /SCEN -folder for the game to crash. The .cmt files are not pure text files but contain other hidden information that the game executable needs.

FUC*!!!!.

Damnit! Damnit! Damnit!

That's probably what has done it.

Damnit!

As a last minute addition, we numbered all the scens, using .......sigh - word and notepad.
That's why the beta's didn't have this issue.
This god-damned game, every frickin' thing has to be done in just an oh-so-specific way - with of course NO documentation on how to do any-fuc*ing-thing.
Everything by trial and error.

OK Fine, I shall go through all the scens with WaWEd re-doing all the .cmt files. This had to be done anyways to shorten the titles. That "More" button being disabled pissed me off no end, but I was avoiding that little duty.
Not anymore.
There's only 250 or so, that shouldn't take that long hahahahaha

standby guys, I'll crank out a patch tout suite.

Riitaoja, I'm going to post this over at the Depot.
Thanks for your help.

sorry guys

The Patch for Campaign #60 is on the board.

A potential fix for the above issues is also ready. Hopefully someone with some hex editor skilz can confirm that the fix is good. I'll keep everyone posted.

The forum got screwed up somehow, they were trying to get things back in order, but it wasn't working, so I think they just wiped it and are starting an entire new one, or
perhaps they just decided to get rid of it
Ill find out
