Allied ground forces launch ground assault at Buna with heavy losses. 67K supply on hand, 1669 AV (total) operational post-action. Situation estimate at this time indicating Allied forces at Buna probably no longer capable of effective attack at current strength – plans (at least short term) are to continue bombardment as much as possible, otherwise remain on defensive. Three of the six Allied divisions at Buna no longer useable in their present state. We may not win the war, but at least we’ll hold Australia. AAR follows.

Considerable air activity over Buna – Allied port bombing raids continue, also air-to-air combat over Buna base hex between Allied fighter sweeps and Japanese CAP fighters. Pillager has increased Japanese CAP over Buna to break up Allied bombing; at the same time simplifying my process of finding, engaging and eliminating the Jap LBA fighter forces operating over eastern New Guinea. As long as Pillager sends Japanese CAP fighters over Buna, Allied fighter sweeps for me are no problem. AAR’s follow.

Marianas invaded

Late May sees the Pacific Fleet invade Guam (secured, support ships in port, airfield up and running) Rota (secured), Tinian (secured) Engineers enroute, Saipan invaded with five divisions. Dug in (Fortification 6 reduced to 4)enemy is being slowly pried out of their defenses. Reserves enroute. So far so good.

Assessment:

Invasion forces all teamed up and followed the first division assigned to the beaches. Unloading went without difficulty and three of the four were quickly taken. Saipan, which intel indicated was well defended did not result in victory yet, but the invasion went off without a hitch. Assault type 1 (APA/AKAs) unloaded quickly. LC (LST/LCI etc,) unloaded in one day (All armor arrived and disembarked without difficulty. Type 2 Assaults (AP/AK) also disembarked without glitch at Rota. Type 3 Assaults (xAP/xAK) unloaded supplies without much interruption. 90% of all type 1 and type 2 shipping utilized in assault. This part went off very well.

Taffys: 16 CVEs combat configured, supported the invasions. Mixed results. Enemy beat them up fairly well, and most retired with damage. Two, badly damaged are at Guam awaiting a Drydock that is not far off. Two were sunk, aircraft diverted to Guam. 6 CVEs supported the operations in replenishment configuration. One sunk, one damaged (Guam), planes diverted to Tinian. 5 Marine Sqdrns arrive Guam and unload without difficulty.

Fleet Carriers: The original plan was for the invasion to follow the Bombardment forces and the ten fleet carriers with CVLs. The Fleet carriers did not advance to the invasion zone as expected due to a follow glitch, where one of the following task forces did not advance as scheduled. By the time that was figured out, the invasion was on and the Fleet carriers were still off Eniwetok. They rushed in, encountered what was left of the KB and proceeded to blast it out of the war. But they then turned and ran away rather than loitering as was ordered. The Taffies finished off the cripples, and intel does not have a single CV/CVL type left undamaged. Zuikaku, Hiryu, Akagi, were sunk, Soryu damaged, and three CVLs sunk. Essex was badly damaged but made Guam, airgroup diverting to Guam. Once some of the damage is reduced both the CVE and Essex will head to West Coast for repairs. Three CV task groups returned to Kwaj, replenished, and now are enroute to support the Saipan operation. Base Engineers are enroute to Guam, Rota, Tinian and the Saipan force will divert to Guam until Saipan is secure.

I am pleased how well the invasion forces worked. I am displeased at the glitch which put the Taffies in the spotlight without Fleet Carrier support. We took more loses as a result, but the overall result is close to what was expected. The enemy has a few operational a/c on Saipan and Pagwe slightly to the north of Saipan.

The KB seems to have been at Truk, but what is left is retiring to home islands. Saipan will fall in June. Meanwhile upgrades will begin for the fleet carriers and I will sort out what troops remain with CENPAC and which will divert to SWPAC for the Mac invasion of the Philippines.

CBI: Allies have busted through Moulmein and are running for Tavoy. Enemy is withdrawing to Bangkok as able. I am not able to stop the evacuation. However, I have no intention of proceeding into Thailand. XX air force is still poorly trained. The B-29s are not going anywhere soon.

Future: Preparing Mac to advance to Sorong and then the Philippines, probably through Mindanao. Bonins next for CENPAC

Johnjohn,

Several quick notes on my own employment of CVE in front-line operations… In general, my primary mission of CVE in front-line ops is close-in CAP air support of amphibious or other TF’s in areas where opposing naval air strikes are expected if not probable. Air groups aboard these CVE are mainly or entirely fighters – fighter squadrons on these CVE equipped with first-line planes and experienced fully trained pilots (basically the same standard as VF squadrons on fleet CV’s). The Escort Carrier force I’m using in my campaign has been composed of six TF with 2 CVE plus DD in each TF, all six TF moving together at sea in (stacked together) formation. Escort Carrier force TF’s are also moving (set to foll0w) whatever amphibious or other TF they are covering, the Escort Carrier force and TF being covered also moving together at sea in a stacked formation.

The most recent example of this CVE employment in my campaign was covering the amphibious supply and LCU transport operation to Terapo (7/22 – 7/24/44) which included fighter CAP from Escort Carrier force CVE vs a full scale KB naval air strike on 7/24. While the US Escort Carrier force had 9 of 12 CVE sunk or damaged (4 sunk) in this action, it did absorb the KB air strike and claimed 200+ Japanese planes (all KB) in the process with relatively light US air losses. Virtually all US planes and pilots from the lost CVE were recovered.

Considerations for strategy behind this employment of CVE is prioritized around protecting ships in amphibious or other TF the CVE are covering. I’m of the view that specialized Allied amphibious ships (especially APA & AKA, LST’s to a lesser degree) are a close second to carriers as prime Allied naval assets. Without sufficient specialized amphibious ships in quantity, invasion landings become considerably more difficult if not impossible in some cases.

Marianas update

I did not intend for the CVEs to engage the KB nor did they until the end. They got chewed up by the fighters on Saipan and Pagwe primarily, until they chewed them up. By then they took damage. The KB did not arrive, fortunately, until the 5th fleet carriers did and they got plastered. The CVEs still in the area cleaned up the mess since the 5th Fleet carriers vanished after the engagement, headed back to port. Two of the five task groups had damage, both retiring to PH, with Essex at Guam with considerable damage (over 50% flotation). Three task groups went back to Kwaj, replenished and now are a couple days out from the Marianas.

I like your CVE approach, and what I was trying to do in covering the invasion forces was to free the Fleet Carriers to ignore supporting the invasions, but to cover in case the enemy rose to intercept. It worked out that way, but not as planned.
