The Countdown Thread -- Crazy is as crazy does

Oh, this is fun...

I have three computers here running automated crash tests simultaneously.

The tests:

[*]Are totally automated, entirely hands-off. I launch a Cygwin command line script, the script takes over, and I walk away.
[*]The game is in auto-play, A/I vs. A/I test play mode.
[*]Every scenario is being tested, in sequence, one after another, from smallest to largest.
[*]So as to exercise the graphics in different ways, one system (my fastest) is testing in 4d (hot key 2) 3D mode; another system is testing in 6d (hot key 5) 2D mode; and a third is testing in 2d (hot key 6) 2D mode.
[*]At the conclusion of every scenario, the csttrun script archives for safekeeping and auditing purposes (in case of crashes, or freezes) all .btl save files, and all log files.

It's really neat to be surrounded by computers (I have five systems here in the Man Cave, with seven monitors), three of which are automated crash testing the Middle East game. Neat, but also kinda crazy.

If past experience with JTCS last year is any guide, I expect that on the fastest system, and maybe on all three, all ~70 scenarios will be tested within a day, maybe two. By the time we go Gold Master, we should have pretty good evidence that the game is stable and crash-free. Assuming!

Enough for now. Let the computers do their thing overnight. As for me, now to bed!

Be it ever so humble, there's no place like ... the Man Cave:

To the right, in the shadows, a Windows XP box and a Windows 7 laptop also running automated ME crash tests. In the center, my primary Windows 7 dev system (facing), and my primary Linux workstation (from the rear).

2D Normal view with the NATO icons MOD in place. Had to crop the picture down to 60% to meet the 200kb limit so it looks a bit off but you get the idea.

Berto, you know how to get things done right! I always read your posts, as they are interesting, and show how much work goes into something like building and adapting a game engine. Impressive as always.

I think Berto has earned himself a proper War Name (with apologies to movie 'Fury'):

Grady Travis: Goddamn, Berto. You a fighting, coding, testing machine, ain't you?
Don Collier: Machine, that's it, that's his war name.
Boyd 'Bible' Swan: That's perfect.
[the others laugh]
Don Collier: I christen thee "Machine."
Boyd 'Bible' Swan: Machine!
Trini 'Gordo' Garcia: Machine!
Grady Travis: Machine!
Don Collier: Machine!
Grady Travis: Yeah.
[quietly to himself] Berto: Machine.
Don Collier: I love it in here. I do. Best job I ever had.
Grady Travis: Best #*#%& job.
Boyd 'Bible' Swan: Yeah.

About ten hours later:

Among the three test systems, at test scenario counts 60, 57 & 58 -- still no freezes or crashes.

As the scenarios get bigger and bigger the farther down the test list, the longer and longer the test games are taking.

I was clearly too optimistic when I stated that complete test runs would require just a couple of days at most. No, now I expect these tests to last 2-3 days more.

Still, looking real good!

Viva Las Vegas!

For some time I have been quite convinced We Are All Mad Here. In a Alice-In-Wonderland kind of a way. For It Helps.

Meanwhile, Elvis the Fourth has not been loitering in Graceland, but been busy beating those scenarios around.

59/69 scenarios churned under the Almost-Release-Candidates game installation. Next Release Candidates, then, Gold Masters!

I just realised I should break the test scenario script into four parts, then have my quad-core W10 run four parallel sessions for a quicker resolution.

Flip, Flop, and Fly !!!

A blast from the past: Coder Diary #17 -- Past, Present & Future

...

And continuing on to the present. Posted recently in the Dev Forum (and airing a bit of our dirty linen):
ORIGINAL: berto

For the RC 20150830 FULL GAME install...

First CSlint results, these from cschkinstall.pl. cschkinstall.pl compares the current install (20150830) to the previous one (in this case Jason's 20150828 install).

cschkinstall.pl reports no ERRORs!

Robert@roberto ~/cslint
$ egrep -i "error" cschkinstall.20150830.out
[nil]

This is very good.

Some WARNINGs, some of them false positives or unimportant, but others of special note highlighted:

Robert@roberto ~/cslint
$ egrep -i "warning" cschkinstall.20150830.out | egrep -v "(size|cksum|mtime) difference|bad extension|\.log not found|saves/.*not found|pictures.*not found"

WARNING: file graphics/sides3d.bmp newer than graphics/sidesnight3d.bmp
WARNING: file oobs/leader8.oob has bad name
WARNING: file oobs/leader9.oob has bad name

"not found in ref DB" indicates a new addition. "not found" indicates a removal.

Please review the above WARNINGs to see if anything is of concern.

Be sure to verify the graphics additions in the above list.

We accept the need for having both Leader8.oob & Leader08.oob, and Leader9.oob & Leader09.oob. Searching through the code:

Robert@roberto /cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/Robert/My Documents/Games/Matrix Games/CS/devel/Campaign Series
$ find . -type f -exec egrep -il "leader.*oob" {} \; | ./cpph
./edorg/edorg.cpp
./frontend/Fetch.cpp

That's two different places in the code where the Leader OOB files are referenced. Although I might inspect the code, I can't confidently predict that it should be Leader8.oob instead of Leader08.oob, or vice versa (and similarly for nation 9's Leader OOB file). Much less do I/we have the time to test it thoroughly right now. So, regrettably, we will have to accept the file duplication.

However, please note:

Robert@roberto /cygdrive/f/Games/Matrix Games/Middle East
$ cksum middle_east/OOBs/Leader[89].oob middle_east/OOBs/Leader0[89].oob | sort -n
3119115043 515 middle_east/OOBs/Leader08.oob
3292444730 362 middle_east/OOBs/Leader09.oob
3292444730 362 middle_east/OOBs/Leader8.oob
3292444730 362 middle_east/OOBs/Leader9.oob

The last three files are identical in checksum, and size (bytes). But the nation 8 Leader OOB files don't match! They should. Please review.

The data/unittext.txt removal is correct. In fact, the game code is looking for unittext.txt in the texts folder:

gfnam = GameFile (XTexts, "unittext.txt");

I confirmed that unit texts are displaying in the F2 Unit Handbook. So no problem with unittext.txt.

encrypt.exe has been removed. Good!

The manual removals are appropriate.

The manual/sumatrapdfcache/*.png files -- maybe best to leave well enough alone.

@Petri: Note the warning about "graphics/sides3d.bmp newer than graphics/sidesnight3d.bmp" -- should we be concerned?

More to follow...
ORIGINAL: berto

csgfxchk.pl results:

Robert@roberto ~/cslint
$ ./csgfxchk.pl -n +w +e -g me | egrep -v "no.*picture file"
ERROR: for unit BMP file Up0288804.bmp, no corresponding BIT file (P0288804: <UNKNOWN>)
ERROR: for unit BMP file Up248005.bmp, no corresponding BIT file (P248005: <UNKNOWN>)

WARNING: for unit BIT file Op288804.bit, no corresponding BMP file (P288804: <UNKNOWN>)

These are, I think, the same results from two days ago.

There might be some false positives in that. This was maybe already confirmed. If so, just disregard.
And other posts like the above ... until:
ORIGINAL: berto

csutxchk.pl looks good:

Robert@roberto ~/cslint
$ ./csutxchk.pl -n +w +e -g me
[nil]

Yay!

That concludes my CSlint checks for now.

I had really wanted to supplement my routine CSlint checks with some additional ad hoc, command line data vetting. Maybe I'll get to some of that later this week.

(Idle thought: Can you imagine how useful, essential even, (a by then beefed up) CSlint etc. will be when we need to vet the JTCS 3.0 data -- a data set at least 10X larger than the ME one? [X(])
So we have a few QA tricks up our sleeves. But despite that, will Middle East ship entirely, 100% bug free? Hardly! But it won't be for lack of trying!

Be it ever so humble, there's no place like ... the Man Cave:

The whole Dev Team is very envious of Berto's Man Cave. That is the reason he never invites us to his home, for he knows we'd never leave. It is all good. For we wouldn't.

So, the rest of us have to cope in other ways. Me? I rely on elvis-iv to do his part. There is only One Elvis. Similarly, there is only one elvis-iv, so better make it count.

elvis-iv is a custom built. Did you know? You can easily build one. All it takes is something to scare all the bugs away so they'll never come back. One of the easier methods is to remind them you're a M.Sc in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Software.

If you're not, like I am not: bluff!

In pic 1 I've placed my trusted NASA coffee mug (must be filled with black coffee - no cream, no sugar!) among the components. See all the little bugs running away! I rely on basic, robust components. What better way to start a build for a wargamin' computer than to built it inside Corsair's matt black steel cage known as Carbide 300r. Love it. The other component I choose as a basis is a solid Corsair power source. You want to built on a solid basis right! Love them too, with their cool blue leds shining in the dark corner of my teeny tiny Man Attic Corner Thingy. Love it too! I've built pretty much similar rigs to my sons, geared up to their more modern taste on PC games.

[center]Image[/center]

In pic 2, and you can call me old school for I am, but there's nothing like buying the biggest and baddest air cooler there is, and to stick it into the motherboard. No water cooling sissies allowed in our house! It is a man thing. Love it.

[center]Image[/center]

In pic 3, 'elvis-iv is alive'. This moment never ceases to amaze me. Bluff worked. No bugs, they were removed in step 1 remember.

[center]Image[/center]

Yet, how can I compete with Berto's Man Cave. We can't. No one can. And I am not on a Mission Impossible here so I will look to compliment it rather.

One of the things Berto convinced the team very early on was to install Cygwin on our systems, to be able to run his magical scripts on our builds too.

In Pic 4, four simultaneous ME executables, each with their own list of scenarios to run. Running the games with 2D Extreme Zoom-out View for a bit quicker resolution as there's less zooming around the map. Neat!

[center]Image[/center]

I have observed the RAM usage varies per scenario size from low 75 megs to larger scenarios at 150-200 range and even the biggest ones at 300 - 350 meg range. Not bad! This is a robust, efficient game engine we're packing. Very stable too, given we've so far together with Berto ran some 300 scenarios over the past two days without a crash.

Will there be bugs? Yes, they are unavoidable, there will always be bugs. [:(] Among our testing we continue to meet not only bugs of our own making, but from legacy stuff too, still.
ORIGINAL: Berto

So we have a few QA tricks up our sleeves. But despite that, will Middle East ship entirely, 100% bug free? Hardly! But it won't be for lack of trying!

Amen!

So with a break in the action, I can finally attend to some Other Stuff, such as...

Remember my catastrophic power line incident from three weeks ago? Remember where my new Linux laptop died? Well, before calling Dell for replacement, I tried powering on one final time (supposedly), and ... it lives!

I have no idea why, despite repeated failed power-ons several weeks ago, it is now working.

[&:]

But whatever, it lives!

[:D]
That is the Linux system that successfully runs Middle East under Linux Wine, BTW.

We're still coordinating with Matrix/Slitherine on the hand-off. Currently working through some issues with the installer.

In the meantime, how pleasant it is not to be work, work, working on the game all the time. How pleasant it is to ... um, do other kinds of work. D'oh!
