16-22 July 1942 (57th week of the war)

The Germans are within 30 miles of Stalingrad, but strong Red Army forces block their way to the city. Southern Front is deployed along the Don from Boguchar to Stalingrad.

2nd Shock Army has been allocated by STAVKA to operate in the Boguchar-Stalingrad region.

Elements of the Crimea and Transcaucasus Fronts provide additional defenses. Rostov is now in German hands and have reached the Volga east of Stalingrad. Much of the Crimea Front has arrived right on time to extend our lines and will be successfully extricated. Boris Mikhailovitch (Shaposhnikov) may have saved the city for us by this feat.

23-29 July 1942 (58th week of the war)

Comrade Stalin has issued General Order 227 which orders no further voluntary retreat and also makes it clear that our troops in the Stalingrad area will defend their positions to the death. This order is read to all troops of the front by way of the political officers at every level.

For whatever reason, the Germans now seem content to remain in the vicinity of Rostov and are not advancing further south. This is a stroke of good fortune as almost all available Red Army units have been pulled from the area. The largest remaining army-sized force is the Coastal Army at Sevastopol.

30 July-5 August 1942 (59th week of the war)

Two German divisions manage to cross the Don east of Veshenskaya. A concerted counterattack by our troops pushes one of those divisions back 10 miles but remain north of the river. Further west they are across the Don in the area of Svoboda that results in divisions of the Stalingrad Front tactically redeploying from their westernmost fortified positions along the Don.

Farther north, the Germans have launched an attack over the Oka to trap more of our troops. Voronezh Front has adjusted their positions in the area of Tambov as the Germans now have mobile forces over the Tsna River.

Comrade Stalin is reported to be furious by these "tactical re-dispositions" countenanced by Marshal Voroshilov in light of the General Order issued last week, but the army must be preserved in these challenging summer weeks.

6-12 August 1942 (60th week of the war)

Our Southern Front has been renamed Southeastern Front. I have managed to arrange for the transfer of Southwestern Front General Aleksei Antonov here as my Chief of Staff. This will help insure proper planning for operations in the Stalingrad area. The immediate area is not under threat, as the Germans have made their most recent efforts farther to the north.

13-19 August 1942 (61st week of the war)

Konev’s 16th Army fails in an attempt to dislodge 10th Motorized and 13th Tank Divisions under von Mackensen that are dug in near Veshenskaya. The Fascists still make no direct move either against Stalingrad or to break out from their southernmost positions along the Don near Rostov. Instead they focus on pushing eastwards in the areas north of the River Don.

20-26 August 1942 (62nd week of the war)

Boguchar has been given up as the German advance in the north makes a defense of the city no longer possible.

27 August-2 September 1942 (63rd week of the war)

2 September, 8pm. Spending a few hours in the southern part of Stalingrad this evening prior to heading for the local aerodrome. I have been recalled to Moscow, and word has it Comrade Stalin is about to reinstate me as Chief of the General Staff. Voroshilov has not delivered what Comrade Stalin had hoped for, and so perhaps change is in the air.

His ground losses are very low, means his German Army is going to stay potent for quite awhile.

Comrade Zhukov is immortal in my PBEM games, as are others if the opponents wish to agree to reroll logistics phases, for whatever reasons.

ps, you can do just fine without him.

I wonder if this is something in the 1.08.x patches. I'm seeing very few (none?) commanders lost in action, but a steady stream of car crashes and air accidents is reducing my command cadre.

guess in most games Zhukov is immortal as he's in Stavka? If I recall properly the holder of that post can't be killed by in-game random events.

3-9 September 1942 (64th week of the war)

Marshal Shaposhnikov is advised by STAVKA that General-Leitenant Vladimir Kurdyumov, Deputy Commander of the Crimea Front is Zhukov’s replacement and is being reassigned to command of Southeastern Front.

8th Air Army commander, General-Leitenant Aviatsii Fyodor Falakeev, was promoted to General-Polkovnik.

10-16 September 1942 (65th week of the war)

General-Leitenant Kurdyumov was no Zhukov, nor did he pretend to be. He relied heavily on his Chief of Staff Antonov for guidance on Front operations. Antonov was already well respected by the STAVKA and it was felt he would be able to keep the new front commander largely out of trouble. Although he was totally unaware, Kurdyumov had already narrowly averted losing his 3rd Shock Army to Stalin's whims. With Zhukov now dead, the Supreme Commander was of a mind to replace Chernyakhovsky with the previous army commander, Danilov. At the same time, he would then have the 3rd Shock re-assigned under STAVKA control. Before making the decision however, Stalin contacted Nikolai Vatutin to hear his opinion. As Chernyakhovsky's senior while commanding 8th Army, Vatutin insisted that his former division commander was capable of commanding any army and that there was no need to transfer 3rd Shock away from Southeastern Front. The conversation lasted over half an hour, the end result that Stalin relented and agreed to leave things alone.

In the Moscow sector, German tank divisions hammer away at Red Army positions, slowly gaining pieces of ground.

Over 62,000 men of the Voronezh Front are surrounded along the River Vorona by elements of four German tank corps.

1st Shock Army commander, General-Maior Leonid V. Bobkin, was promoted to General-Leitenant. Commander of 4th Shock Army, Nikolai Krylov was replaced by General-Maior Pavel Rybalko.

This week, northwest of Vyazma, Fliegerkorps I was subjected to a series of airbase raids by elements of 1st and 2nd Air Armies as well as the Long Range Air Command which met with mixed success. Over 40 enemy aircraft were reported as destroyed on the ground or in the air.

General-Leitenant Konev's 16th Army supported by Chernyakhovsky's 3rd Shock attacked enemy forces in the area of Novo-annenskaya. Similar attacks were conducted by General-Leitenant Bagramyan's 50th Army.

Enjoying the AAR and at this point your almost to mud season of 1942 and still very in the game. Took a pretty heavy beating over the Summer it looks like and the German army is very strong so going to be a long road to fight your way into Berlin.

24-30 September 1942 (67th week of the war)

The last week of September and rain expected in the middle of next month.

German armor remains active west of Moscow in an effort to force Western Front back. The defensive strength of their units makes counterattacks by Red Army troops in the area virtually impossible.

Image

Nine rifle divisions are surrounded at Penza.

Image

Southeastern Front is ordered by STAVKA to prepare to hurl forces over the Don and establish a bridgehead on its western bank. They will be supported by other units in the vicinity. During the coming winter this area has been chosen for offensive action.

17th Tank Corps of 3rd Shock Army is renamed 1st Guards Tank Corps.

1-7 October 1942 (68th week of the war)

The German attacks in the area west of Moscow continue. Three German tank corps are operating in this area. Red Army forces continue to hold bridgeheads south of the Oka which it is hoped will be useful during winter.

Image

With the Penza pocket liquidated, the enemy now seems to have his eye on the city of Saransk.

Image

Perhaps with the Fascists now focused in the north, it will create opportunities for us in the south. Southeastern Front crosses the River Don in force and takes Sirotinskaya. A lodgment some 20 miles deep is created.

8-14 October 1942 (69th week of the war)

The last week of good weather for a while. Southeastern Front was renamed Stalingrad Front.

German attacks continue south of Penza.

Image

They also attack in the area northwest of Kaluga. Localized Red Army attacks are conducted south of the Oka.

Image

In the Stalingrad area, west of the Don, 3rd Shock Army drove the German 4th Mountain Division back and with the help of an additional tank corps eliminated fortified positions on at least one part of the line. Fresh troops continue to pour into the Don bridgehead.

15-21 October 1942 (70th week of the war)

Rain has arrived and the mud along with it. Operations grind largely to a standstill.

59th Army commander, General-Maior Vladimir Kurasov, was promoted to General-Leitenant.

22-28 October 1942 (71st week of the war)

Southwestern Front arrived.

As muddy conditions continue into the second week, more troops are brought over the Don near Stalingrad.

A large number of air regiments are sent to the reserve in order to conserve the truck fleet. Rear Area Services reports that units have 86% of their truck requirements while motor pool needs are at 72% of requirements.
