Workaround for reducing the lag when running on Windows 8/8.1

Post by VPaulus »

1. Firstly you'll need to download and install three extra programs:

D3DWindower

Unzip the downloaded file (D3DWindower-rED.zip) and copy the four extracted files (D3dHook.dll, D3DWindower.exe, DLLHook.txt and readme.txt) to a folder of your choice (ex.: C:\D3DWindower).

Click the right mouse button over D3DWindower.exe and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the option Run this program as an administrator. Click on Apply and Ok.

Create a desktop shortcut from D3DWindower.exe. To do this click with the right mouse button over the file and select Send to >> Desktop (create a shortcut)

HotKey Resolution Changer (HRC)

Unzip the downloaded file (HRC_-_HotKey_Resolution_Changer_v2_1.exe.zip) and copy the extracted file (HRC.exe) to a folder of your choice (eg. C:\HRC).

Click the right mouse button over HRC.exe and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the option Run this program as an administrator. Click on Apply and Ok.

Create a desktop shortcut from HRC.exe. To do this click with the right mouse button over the file and select Send to >> Desktop (create a shortcut)

Windowed Borderless Gaming

Unzip the downloaded file (WindowedBorderlessGaming_2.1.0.1.zip) and copy the three extracted files (WindowedBorderlessGaming.exe, ReadMe.txt, and license.rtf) to a folder of your choice (ex.: C:\WindowedBorderlessGaming).

Click the right mouse button over WindowedBorderlessGaming.exe and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the option Run this program as an administrator. Click on Apply and Ok.

Create a desktop shortcut from WindowedBorderlessGaming.exe. To do this click with the right mouse button over the file and select Send to >> Desktop (create a shortcut)

2. Install the game and update the game. You can download the last patch (v2.50 )from the link below:

ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/UncommonV ... -v25dr.zip

Once you have downloaded the file please unzip it. Run the extracted file to update the game.

3. Run the game and set the resolution to 1024x768 in the Preferences menu. Exit the game.

4. Now you must set the desktop screen resolution to 1024x768 to match the game resolution.

It's easier to use an utility like HotKey Resolution Changer (HRC). This way you don't need to restart Windows everytime you want to change between the game resolution and the original desktop resolution.

Run HRC from the desktop shortcut icon that you have created for the program. Click on the HRC icon displayed in the System Tray.

Two screen resolutions should be displayed. Click on the arrow in the bottom one and set the resolution to 1024x768.

Image

Now click on the monitor and your screen desktop resolution will change to 1024x768.

Image

Note: If by any reason the screen is not refreshing please click Ctrl+ALT+SHIFT+R to return to the original resolution.

5. Run the Windowed Borderless Gaming program from the desktop shortcut icon.

6. Run D3DWindower from the desktop shortcut icon. Click on the + button and browse for the Uncommon Valor main exe file named uncommonvalor.exe. (A.)
The default location of uncommonvalor.exe is C:\Matrix Games\Uncommon Valor.

With the uncommonvalor.exe highlighted inside the D3DWindower box, click on the Run program button. (B.)

7. The game should be now running in 1024x768 Windowed mode.

8. The final configuration step is to set the windowed mode to full screen. For this we will need
Windowed Borderless Gaming utility.

As the utility is already running (Step 5), we only need to configure it. While the game is running press ALT+TAB to jump to your desktop. Note: Don't have any other window open besides the game.

Click on the icon for Windowed Borderless Gaming in the System tray and select Add Windows (F3).

Press ALT+TAB to jump to the window with the game and press F3.

The game should now be in full screen.

As an alternative to D3DWindower you can also use DXWND:

DxWnd has a full screen setting also. I tried it and so far UV plays fine. No lagging. So you don't really need the Borderless Gaming tools unless you want.

Thanks. I bought UV when on release and was thinking about it the other day. I actually prefer it to WITP:AE as everything is much more manageable.

I installed the game but got the lag on every mouse movement which made it unplayable. I tried DXWND and the game works great. I've set the game resolution in DXWND to 2500x1375 (I have a 2560x1440 monitor) and that seems to be the sweet spot for me. It's not quite full screen but all the text is perfectly readable and the lag is gone.

Thanks again.

+1 for DxWnd!

I couldn't get UV working at all using the much longer process outlined in the original message. However, thanks to a few other recommendations here, I tried DxWnd and it works perfectly! It took less than 10 mins to download and set up and DxWnd handles the screen sizes well, too. My monitor is 1920 * 1080 and I set DxWnd to run UV at 1024 * 768 and it works beautifully. No lag, screen easy to read. Could almost certainly set the screen size larger, but I'm happy with the it at the current size.
