Ship upgrade questions

Post by jwolf »

Hi to all ... more rookie questions:

1. Using the s hotkey I can see a list of all ships due an upgrade, and filter to overdue, current, next month, etc. But what this list does NOT show is, for each ship, how long the upgrade takes and how much shipyard is needed, if any. Is it possible to find this info without checking each ship individually?

2. If a ship needs a shipyard to upgrade, my experience so far is that once the upgrade begins, you can change the ship to pierside mode and complete the process at the same rate without any compromise to the upgrade. Is this WAD? Effectively, the rule seems to be that you need to have a shipyard but you don't actually have to use it? [&:]

For #1 Tracker will tell you at a glace. And as for #2 you are correct. Once the ship is selected for upgrade and "taken out of commission", you do not have to leave it in the shipyard (presupposing that a shipyard size has been designated, but not all upgrades require shipyards) but can move it to pier-side to make room for ships that need the yard for repairs.

A prob I made for myself - 2 Clemson-class AVDs were allowed to Upgrade at Rennell Island. The upgrade didn't require a shipyard, but added 20 Major Flotation damage & 7 Major Engine damage points to both ships. They are happily clicking down the days of their refit, but once they finish I'll have to move them to Brisbane for shipyard repairs before they're operational again. I didn't read the fine print about upgrade damage.

I've not had this prob before, it may be specific to the DBB Scen#30 I'm playing.

Another upgrade snag: a CLAA just appeared in Balboa; since it was due an upgrade, I set it to refit there. It says it doesn't need a shipyard, but the upgrade isn't happening -- apparently I need a bigger facility, but how can you tell? I wish there were a bit more transparency in these requirements.

The CLAA upgrade is listed as costing only time, no shipyard. But it still won't go at Balboa.

It isn't limited to Scen 30 as the scenario designer can mandate a level of damage to be added when ship upgrade is undertaken. This is particularly the case when it actually isn't an upgrade but a conversion which is involved. Significant damage, as you experienced, is usually found with a conversion.

Read my post in this thread

tm.asp?m=2824948&mpage=1&key=ship%2Cupgrade&#2826308

which provides the outline of the "formula" which is used for non shipyard required upgrades.

Even a fully developed Balboa, which I very much doubt is the case here, would be very unlikely to be able to effect the upgrade.

Thanks, Alfred, looks like I'll have to work with a larger port.

Hey Jwolf, this button also come very handy:
Image

you can sort by ship type and cancel upgrades, I would advise you keep at least your warship on "OFF" and manually decide where to do the upgrades.
I won't mind all submarines, escorts, even xAKs set as "ON" as they usually only disband in their base port

Yeah I've learned to look ahead at the coming month and turn all ships to off, then consider individually what the plan is. Keeps you in control.

BTW in the post that Alfred linked it is stated that the devs deliberately kept some details about upgrades in the dark. Well, they wrote the code so they get the last word ... but it seems very strange to me. I can understand for combat and to a lesser extent movement, you want it to be a bit unpredictable or even mysterious at times. But I don't know why they did that for a purely administrative function such as ship upgrades.

The AE development was not an open source project. That means that both 2By3 (who created classical WITP) and Henderson (who reworked classical WITP into AE) retain their intellectual property rights. Each AE dev had to sign a NDA with Henderson. Even Floyd and Damian who created the third party software "Tracker" have had to sign a NDA.

The heart of any software program and where the most sensitive intellectual property rights reside, are the algorithms. The AE devs are contractually precluded from disclosing the specifics of the algorithms. Most of AE's algorithms do not deal with combat or movement. It would completely defeat the purpose of the NDA to allow open disclosure of non combat algorithms.

There is nothing surprising about the non disclosure of the inner workings of the game engine. What is surprising is that so much detail of what happens under the hood has ever been disclosed at all by the devs. Such generosity has often not been appreciated by players.

Quite a few non-shipyard upgrades and conversions that can't be done at Balboa can be done at Cristobal such as xAKs to AKEs.
