Raid on PH Dec 43 with massive KB

Post by Cavalry Corp »

Here is my raid on pearl 15-16 the Dec 43 PBEM 2 DAY TURNS - SCN 2

The allied player told me both BB were in dry dock - should the sink I assume not they must have just blazed away.
Note neither Jill or Judy carry the nice 800kilo bomb. I was hoping to catch an allied CV there ( they lost most in 42 and there has been little activity in 43 for allied carriers).

Interesting the allied player also said that Signet reported one of the CV between PH and Aluetians the turn before but thought we were raining Alutians. The sub got trashed as I wanted her there to try and pick up pilots.

RE: Raid on PH Dec 43 with massive KB

Post by Bullwinkle58 »

Well, OK. But I've got to ask, so what? What did you risk/give up? What did he lose that matters?

I will say that defending PH with a few Mohawks and P-39s in 1943 is pretty dumb.

Hitting BBs with GP bombs, even 500KG will not do much other then mess up the topside stuff (and cause fires, which the Allies put out all to easily). But on other targets, a real mess. But yes, what did you accomplish? You diverted your KB from other duties. Was it worth it??? Other than a big embarrassment to your opponent, I doubt that much was accomplished militarily. Please let us know if I'm wrong here. Thanks, Hal

Flak was anemic, a truly December 7 performance.

Well, OK. But I've got to ask, so what? What did you risk/give up? What did he lose that matters?

I will say that defending PH with a few Mohawks and P-39s in 1943 is pretty dumb.

Second that bigtime.

Congress will certainly call for some heads to roll.

Cavalry was after the two BBs. Maybe if his bomber groups had been >exp 70 the 800kg bombs would have materialised. Also few torps there.

It does answer the question of torpedoes in PH after December 7th. A few more of them would have caused havoc. And as the OP said, he was trying for a shot at some carriers.

OK here it is.

The allied player had a terrible 42 ( lost all but one US CV plus many other ships) but since then he has crawled forward in the DEI and PI to the point now where oil is difficult for to oil get out.

The LBA has to be avoided with the KB as well as the subs the KB has to take big risks.

90% of our game is in the PI and DEI. I was hoping to catch an Essex CV there or a build up for a second offensive in the centre, as Japan its a risk you take - yes he did look quite weak, that also tells me he had no offensive planned.

DR Hal - As far as I know both BB are sunk - you are wrong to think bombs do not sink BB they do, they cause sys damage and they start fires. nothing can take that many bombs and they were in dry dock under repair already.

Bullwinkle - He lost everything I think I sank every ship in PH. But there was much less there than I expected. - shows the focus is in DEI AND PI.

Lets see what happen in the next turn...

Still, it's absolutely criminal to leave Pearl covered by a only pair of squadrons of 2nd and 3rd rate airframes.

Dis he lose and never retake Midway?

Was there no PBY squadron at FFS or Laysan to give early warning on an approach from the north?

After all, this is the most open route to Pearl...

How can an Allied player get to late '43 without having built a perimeter defense cordon and maintained an adequate air defense around his most valuable port?

Looks like very inexperienced play on the Allied side.

It's good for you that you could exploit it.

Nice raid. As Hans said, kudos to exploiting the weak defence at Pearl.

However, as others have said...so what? Your above statement shows me this was a huge strategic misallocation of assets to achieve a very limited tactical goal. You say he's lost most of his CV's already, yet still advancing to threaten or cut off your fuel/oil flow to the Home Islands. You wasted how much fuel on this raid and only sank a couple of early war BB's and a handful of support ships? I don't know the overall situation, but sounds like you went on a joy ride while the real war is being fought and lost in the Philippines?

I believe he said he lost all but one of the 1942 carriers. Which means in late 1943 he has a big basket of new carriers. Somewhere. Not Pearl. Pucker time.

I have no clue how many Essex class CV's the Allies will have at this time, but conducting a raid at PH 'hoping' to find one doesn't seem like a good use of KB. Again, I don't know the situation and maybe the loss of oil to the Home Islands in Dec. 43 isn't a big deal in Scenario 2. I'd be curious to know what the Allied player does with his CV's with KB at PH.

That was a lot of fuel burned in 1943 for that many aircraft to be launched.

I mulled a strike of my own earlier in the year, but didn't do it.

I don't think the OP is playing with the database updates that affected flak? Losses are far too low.

I figured you would. I still do. No Mohawks in my PH. [:'(]

It's not just the Essex-class. The 1943 CVLs are numerous, and valuable, flexible ships. You can intermix them with the big boys. You can offload the strike planes and load a second fighter unit. You can operate them alone. You can mix THEM with CVEs. They will get hurt against a KB-size force, but they are a match for a MKB in 1943-44 if handled well and configured properly. They allow the Allies to "be" in more than one place at a time.

Dec 43? Where the Mohawks at a museum? How about a couple of P-38's? And what about PBY's on the Line Islands somewhere?

GP bombs on a BB at PH will be repaired in a month. It messes up the secondary batteries but does little flotation damage.

Fires could put System damage in the 90s with enough hits. That takes months, or years.
