Actually I imagine Raytheon (they build the missile) Quality Assurance is not having any fun this week. Failures with that degree of visibility are not appreciated and the vendors have some rough times.

So sayeth a retired Navy guy who now works for QA at a defense contractor. (And KNOWS the drill).

I bet I can come close to the terms used, although perhaps not in the correct order.

I remember watching Sea Sparrow shoots off my CVN. Of the four I watched, only 1 was successful. I'm very happy none failed as spectacularly as that one though...we'd typically be invited up to the flight deck to watch, that would have been a bad day!

I saw one Sea Chicken shoot off my Frigate - a bit better than the CV results - there was skin to skin contact with the drone. REAL fireball as all the fuel in the drone went up. Most impressive explosion I've ever seen (and hope to see - most explosions are bad unless you are sending ordnance down range and I'm retired from the Navy for a decade plus so no more sending ordnance down range)

I was thinking along the same lines! I was watching a Sea Sparrow launch one day, just to see what the blue pukes could do. It was a test of a newly installed something-or-other, and the Old Man was (1) retiring after this trip, and (2) not well liked <pompous does not do that man's personality justice>. Me & mine were sitting on the wings, listing to an audible countdown (it was a test of a new system).

7...6...5...fwoooshh!

It was called an accidental discharge, claiming someone heard Five & brain registered Fire. I have no real idea what went wrong but I can still see that fat, pompous old fart going down the starboard side looking like a runaway locomotive after 'accidentally' blowing the drone outta the sky. I, of course, had to maintain a solemn expression. But man, we laughed so hard later it hurt [:D][8D] Word later was it was because the ship PX had run outta smokes. Watching some old CPO's without smokes for over a week cured me of EVER thinking about that nasty habit.

In submarines we were trained to never say "fire" unless something was burning. We said "shoot.' Sometimes this training failed, however. Sameo sameo never "close" (sounds like "blows") but rather "shut."

Great Movie! The acting was spot on! But it did not end as easily as this missile launch did.....
