THAAD Ops in Havanna ?

Post by scottb613 »

Hi Folks,

Havana Daydreamin (2017) v1.5

SPOILER - if you haven't played it - SPOILER
============================================
============================================
============================================

Been spending some time with Felton's Havanna scenario - since Cuba had been in the news lately... Man - Felton does create some immersive situations - been lov'n every minute of it...

Anyway - honestly - never even heard of a THAD-C before (I guess I'm preoccupied with 1985) - and - I get this massive stream of missiles from all over south Florida - but they seem to miss everything... Is that the way they are supposed to work ?

Have some super stealthy platforms lobbing AMRAAM's at me that I can't pick up on RADAR - strange...

Anyway - please don't give away what happens after this point - just wondering if this is working as advertised ???

Just wondering - are those F-5E's in Key West supposed to be foreign - or was it an oversight... They got decimated - but - fought valiantly for the good old USA - should probably give them an award or something when this is all over...

Thanks...

Regards,
Scott

" F-5E's in Key West "

VF-45 Fleet Aggressor squadron? Back when I was in the USN (mid-90's), VF-45 had F-5's and F-16's.

Sep 17 1993, our squadron was training at NAS Key West when a Cuban MiG-21 came roaring in over the flight line.
Pilot asked for asylum..

scottb613, those THAADS are there to counter the Cuban's Iskanders but I don't think they have the right radar to properly detect the launch for an intercept or the distance is too short for an intercept which is why you see a stream of them all over not hitting anything.

Also,
Have some super stealthy platforms lobbing AMRAAM's at me that I can't pick up on RADAR - strange...
is kinda the point of the F-22... you know, not to be picked up on radar [:D]

You can intercept some of the Cuban Iskanders if you start moving your THAADS battery to the southern tip of Florida as soon as the scenario starts, by the time that the Iskanders launch you can have your THAADS battery far enough south that you can intercept the third and fourth salvo of Iskanders. But you still wont be able to intercept them all as your OODA loop and missile flight time from southern Florida is longer than the flight time from Cuba to Key West.

The engagement parameters are tight. The initial distance between THAAD battery, targets and shooter really doesn't lend itself to a successful intercept. As Willie mentioned you have to open that margin by moving the battery. More detection capabilities would help as well.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the responses - and - nice pics - there would be no stopping a Mig-21 from jumping across with someone wanting to defect...

Ahh - I replayed it again and realized that all the missiles were shot at the first salvo of what I thought were Submarine launched missiles ( hinted at by the message traffic ) - thanks for the clarification... That's why they all seemed to wildly miss - the distance was too short to make the intercept...

I checked and I see why Felton used F-5's from Thailand for what I'm guessing should be a U.S. aggressor squadron - the Database doesn't have any entries for US based F-5's - - - do we still use F-5's today for aggressors ?

Pretty sure these were added some time after Feltan build the scenario. You may want to update the thing to the newest database and add some of the newer units.

Feltan's scenarios designs are always very cool. He makes you think a bit during the game. He definitely gets what we set up to do with the sim.

Hi Folks,

Found a nice picture - love that paint job - seems like the Sundowners do still fly F-5's out of Key West...

Not sure if they warrant being added to the database though - would they really be capable of being fully armed with live weapons in an emergency ???

Hi Mike,

LOL - sorry - maybe I'm blind - I looked again in the DB3000 and I don't see any listed for the United States - plenty for other countries though... Are we looking at the same database ???

Likely not. I'm looking at the newest shipped with 1.08 which is newer than the Db the scenario was last updated to. To use and see a newer Db you need to rebuild the scenario.

I just went and looked at some older databases and there were a bunch in the DB3000 database.

AAAHHHHH

All the times I played this scenario I never even thought about moving the THADDS battery.

Bugger Bugger Bugger [:@][:@]

The F5's I just normally rearm with Mk82/83 and use for strikes against some of the more exposed targets later on away from likely MANPAD concentrations. ie when there's no REDAIR or SAMS left.

Interesting article - thanks.

From what I remember of this scenario you may be well advised to conserve your THAAD missiles, Felton put them there for a reason [;)]

Lots of US F-5s in the DB, all are limited to Sidewinders which is makes sense considering their role. Could use that great photo though [:D]
