Russian Hitler

Post by Freyr Oakenshield »

I came across this Russian movie called "The Fall of Berlin" the other day. What is interesting about it is the portrayal of Hitler. Sure, the movie is full of communist propaganda. I don't really know when it was filmed. I reckon it was probably the 1950s or 60s. Anyway, Hitler does sound very funny speaking Russian, so do his generals [:D]. Although the movie caricatures Hitler, especially when compared to Stalin, who is depicted as level-headed and wise, I find the actor's performance really good. I've seen a lot of historical footage of Hitler and IMO the Russian actor often makes gestures and behaves in the way that Hitler really did in the WW2 newsreels. Anyway, this is my opinion. Of course, he is not up to Bruno Ganz, but IMO a lot better than many Western actors who portrayed Hitler.

Just take a look and remember to put the propaganda aside for a while...

The movie comes in two parts; you'll need to find the bits with Hitler:

He's not bad for the newsreel hitler, but not up to par with the real life one.

Many people commented that hitler was totally different in person, than in front of a crowd.

He wasn't considered as possesing any great personality gifts, if you will. It seemed to some that if you put him in front of a crowd a switch was turned on.

Certainly, not like a Napoleon.

Probably the best portrait of Hitler, and closer to reality, is the one from the German movie Der Untergang:

I think only one authentic surviving recording of Hitler speaking person-to-person is that the Finnish intelligence services secretly recorded while Hitler visited Finland in 1942.

I think these links work internationally, if not let me know I see if I can find others. From YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) Living Archive service: http://yle.fi/aihe/artikkeli/2006/09/08 ... u-suomessa

I believe these recordings were used by the actor who portrayed Hitler in Der Untergang.

Yes, Bruno Ganz listened to the recordings.

As a side note, some great descriptions of Hitler's personality changes through out the war can be found in General Heinz Guderian's book Panzer Leader. Has to be some of the best descriptions of one on one contact with Hitler I have read to date. I know it isn't film portrayal, but very vivid in it's own way.

There is some argument over if that is hitler on the Finnish recording.

At least one of the people who saw him day to day for years believes it is someone trying to impersonate him.

As far as I know I think most experts agree that this can be a true recording, but who really knows... :)

I think there is little if any doubt the recording itself is authentic. Then, we would have had a Hitler impersonator making the propaganda visit to Mannerheim's 75th birthday. Lots of photographs and witnesses, newspaper publications etc at the time. I would consider this being an authentic recording of Hitler.

Here is the official archive of all WW II era footage property of Finnish Army, by their photographers

http://sa-kuva.fi/?

With a simple search phrase 'Hitler' there's quite a lot of photographs of the event, including of the railway wagon where the meeting took place.

Here's a few:

Well there's plenty more. I tried to also found footage of the moment Hitler's Condor aircraft touched down, and how one of it's brake caught fire. Maybe it is from a film, but it was noticeable how there were open flames. If only the aircraft would have crashed. It was a foggy day, there's also a story how the aircraft just barely missed a tall factory chimney...

Yeah, well, this footage provides an insightful analysis of Hitler's personality away from crowds... [:D]

I didn't say the trip didn't take place.

I said that some people who knew him day to day, do not believe it is him on the recording.

I am a bit surprised that the SS didn't check the whole train etc..

The story that I have heard and read is that he was taped in " secret ".

the mic could have been hidden in somebody's clothes, it's unlikely the SS would frisk the Finnish officials talking to Hitler...

It was Fieldmarshal Mannerheim's personal wagon, or set of wagons. I don't think even for SS / Gestapo what have you they could just walk in and check everything in detail.

I am aware of this persons claims it doesn't sound like Hitler. Yet given everything that is publicly available about the event, I do think the recording must be authentic.
