Steam WitE Stuff

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Steam WitE Stuff

Post by heliodorus04 »

I activated my key, and WitE is downloading via steam.

Obviously this means I'll have two copies of WitE.
I don't mean this as a "tech support" question, but I'm unfamiliar with porting a game I already own to Steam, especially when I have save games going.

I presume that the Steam install will NOT upgrade to a beta version of WitE.
I presume you can get beta version upgrades via the usual method in Steam (don't ask me what that method is; I can't remember, but it exists and I have used it for other games.)

Will this complicate Server games (I'm not playing any, but I ask for others)?
Will it have any impact on PBEM (I presume not)?

I have no idea where Steam would actually place the game; I wouldn't know where to transfer my existing install's save game files.

Thanks

That is the location for learning how to activate your license (if you bought it from anyplace else than Steam, which is almost all of us). The instructions worked perfectly for me.

unless matrix makes the beta patch available on steam for you to "opt in on" no the beta's won't be available. With steam you just right click on a game title and choose properties and there will be a beta tab where you can opt in on a beta. Not sure if just installing a beta manually[downloaded from matrix] to your steam install of WITE will work. Steam is just a front end program so it shouldn't mess with pbem games. I don't know if you can copy your save games over and play as usual but don't see any reason why you couldn't but someone else may know more.

Since play is via Matrix servers I assume yes. But I haven't checked yet whether there is (or there is not) a problem with serials. If you buy WitE directly on Steam there is no "Serial Keys" entry, thus you would not get one to enter on the multiplayer screen. But maybe this was changed, I'll have to find out.

I'm still unclear as to WitE beta versions on Steam.

For those Steam users unfamiliar with accessing Beta versions, this is how I know to do that:

Select View> Games List
This brings up a list of games (duh).

Right-Click on GGWitE> Select Properties
This brings up a new window with several tabs

The penultimate tab is "BETAS"

For WitE on Steam, we apparently need a "Beta Access Code" before we can even see what Betas may be online.

I know you have lots going on. If you can update this issue when you have time, I will do what I can to keep this thread consolidated with FAQ/etc. related to Steam.

It would be nice to have public beta channel (accessible to all), private beta channel (accessible for few people, for .05 development), and the ability to create mods [:)]

With redeem code I converted WItE to steam and it is fine in case installation lost due HD corruption. But through Slitherine servers for pbem games I think it is a bit unnecessary to launch game through steam. But for new players bought from steam beta channel and mods section is good for wider range of players.

Can someone answer the beta question? Would love to play this on steam but not having access to the latest version would not be good!

Steam has 1.08.04, so it is latest version with hotfix.

We usually do one or the other but not both because of the time it takes to setup. As the vast vast majority of players are not on steam it seems likely the won't be either.

Sorry; could you repeat that? Last two words garbled the meaning for me.

The odds are you will not update Steam with betas; is that what you mean?
(I think that would be a marketing mistake, btw.)

Steam versions will be updated with public betas, but there won't be beta release for the testing purposes as it is done on dev forum.
