Missing bodies in the Pacific

Post by Rising-Sun »

Interesting topic on the missing Marines during WWII, how do they know it is US Marines? Dogtags??

Didn't thing they have good records on dental back then and DNA isn't always accurate either. Sad to see them laying there for all those years, rest in peace.

There are many was to ID the nationality of the bodies. Of course DNA, but that takes time. Clothing and metal fond with the bodies (stuff from backpacks etc. that might have survived), bone structure, dental work (very much different than with the Japanese), or other implements such as a helmet, knives or anything that could indicate "made in the USA". May they all rest in peace.

Mercury in their bones might be a dead giveaway. Japanese would have a lot more than Americans because of their fish diets. Tuna in particular is quite high in mercury as they are near the top of the food chain.
