Apple Backs off

Post by VegasOZ »

It has been reported that Apple has restored the sale of The Ultimate General: Gettysburg to the App store.

Maybe the backlash had an effect, either way, it's good news and about time.

Wargamers strikes back
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

More like they're scaling back

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/06/r ... rate-flag/

.....However, TechCrunch reports that talks with unnamed Apple representatives suggest the company is looking to simply reinstate games and apps that make those "historical or educational uses" of the flag without delay. "Apple’s intention is not to lose games from the App Store, but rather remove those titles that could offend," the site paraphrased.

It's all a bit vague and confusing at this point, but signs seem to be pointing toward Apple scaling back what appeared to be a blanket ban on the use of the flag in games and apps. Apple has yet to respond to our request for comment on the matter.

http://www.polygon.com/2015/6/26/885061 ... te-flag-to

There may have been titles that shouldn't have been pulled because the use of the flag could be considered 'historical' or 'educational,'' according to the article. "Apple's intention is not to lose games from the App Store, but rather remove those titles that could offend."

Apple's public statement on the matter seems to reflect that as well:

"We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses."

Hey hey, could this debacle been just advertising stunt? Like how some years ago GoG declared it's going to shutdown its servers but didn't...

Since when do people have the right not to be offended?

I seriously doubt Apple would think that trying to turn the issues in SC and regarding the Confederate flag into a PR stunt would be a good idea

Apple has very quietly returned the Civil War games back to the App Store. Ultimate General Gettysburg is there as well as all of the John Tiller games. I guess bad press trumps any "principled stand" they had. [:D]
Is it impossible idea that Apple wanted to attract attention to those games? If that wasn't the goal, were they just lacking foresight where it would lead? Or maybe Apple wanted to do political statement about censorship?

This happened in Japan few years ago. Someone in Japan government wrote draft for a law which would restrict nudity and other 'adult' themes in manga and anime. One thing of no-no was girls' school uniforms. Before the law was put in effect, many stores in Tokyo took most of their manga under the counter as dictated by the draft. That got enough attention for ministers (or whoever) to take time to read through the draft and rework it to something more sensible. Maybe Apple's goal was something similar and they feign ignorance?

Ever since they had the right to decide when and where to take their business? Corporate image is incredibly important and Apple is super-cautious over this sort of thing.

e: there's no Machiavellian plan here. Apple's general policy (they've done this sort of thing a fair amount in the past) is to blanket remove anything that could cause them PR trouble and then work on a case by case basis of putting apps back on their market.

Good, it's about time. We are heading into a country with the majority ruled by the minority. It's just another symptom of the cancer of Political Correctness running unchecked....
