Alan R. Arvold's Ode To Panzerblitz II

Post by Crossroads »

A bit of housekeeping here as this thread will contain the next set of Panzerblitz situations by Alan R. Arvold, as originally packaged in his Ode To Panzerblitz II set.

From his Design Notes:
Due to success of “Ode to Panzerblitz” it only seemed natural that I continue this work on converting the old Panzerblitz scenarios. Thus I worked on the next set of scenarios, #14-25, which were originally published in the General Vol. 11, #4, and then later republished in the Wargamer’s Guide to Panzerblitz. These were so popular back when they came out that they were considered to be the second “official” scenarios for the game. Yet for all of their popularity, only one of these scenarios has been converted into an East Front II scenario. Now this is about to change.

The scenarios presented here are converted to the same standard as those of the original “Ode to Panzerblitz”. Thus I shall not repeat the design notes for the system as the original article about them is equally applicable. As before these design notes will deal with the set up and construct of the scenarios. Variables such as environmental conditions, morale, changing the order of battle for one or both sides, I leave to the judgment of the individual players.

So here we go then:

Alan R. Arvold

September, 1944

[Western Byelorussia] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

German Rear Area Raid: Western Byelorussia: During and after the great 1944 offensives, there would be periods when no stable, clearly defined front existed.

Here the German 814th Reconnaissance Battalion (reinforced) has penetrated Russian lines and is now within striking distance of the Soviet 11th Army headquarters, with Group Kosmin from a nearby Russian tank corps racing to intercept them before they can do too much damage.

10 February, 1942

[Vyazma] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Soviet Rear Area Operations: Morshanova-Diaglevo Region, Vyazma Sector: In early 1942, numerous Russian units were cut off in the confused fighting around the German stronghold of Vyazma.

The 1st Cavalry Corps and the 8th Airborne Brigade, two such units, managed to evade their pursuers and return to Russian lines in the early summer of 1942. They owed their survival to the cooperation of partisan forces and to captured German supplies.

December, 1944

[Central Poland] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

German Armored Offensive:

Central Poland: A hypothetical situation. Hitler comes to his senses and cancels the Ardennes Offensive, ordering the units involved to attack the Soviets instead.

The situation depicts the German 1st SS Panzer Division colliding with the Russian 25th Tank Corps which has set up defensive positions while it prepares for the Russian offensive that will occur in the following month.

13 January, 1945

[Vistula River, Poland] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Pocketing Action:

Vistula River Line: With the start of the Russian offensive on January 12, 1945, breakouts were achieved all along the Vistula River with the aid of massive artillery barrages. Intact defending units, as in all overwhelming offensives, often found themselves in danger of encirclement.

In this situation, the German 117th Armored Reconnaissance Battalion races to safety with disordered mobile units of the Russian 56th Guards Cavalry Regiment and 11th Tank Corps in hot pursuit.

July, 1944

[Somewhere in Russia] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Combined Russian Offensive:

Somewhere in Russia: A theoretical situation. Two heavily reinforced rifle regiments from the 4th Guards Rifle Division and the heavily reinforced independent 33rd Guards Tank Brigade take on the German 495th Grenadier Regiment.

An illustration of the problems of unit boundaries and of the infantry support capabilities of certain German armored vehicles.

Three new Mini-Games this week; 19a - 19c. One of them even called The Crossroads. What's there not to like!

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 19a (MCS 2.02)

Size Modifier: (2) 1
Turns: 8
Type: Custom
First Side: Axis

Alan R. Arvold

February, 1943

[Somewhere in Russia] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

The Mini-Game Approach:

The Convoy: A German front-line unit is hard pressed and needs supplies and ammunition. The relief convoy must reach them through partisan infested territory. A common problem for the Germans in 1943 and 44.

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 19b (MCS 2.02)

Size Modifier: (2) 1
Turns: 6

First Side: Allies

Alan R. Arvold

January, 1942

[Somewhere in Russia] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

The Mini-Game Approach:

The Crossroads: The first winter on the Eastern Front was one of thinly stretched lines and bitter holding actions. Here, a Russian motorized SMG battalion contests a vital road junction with a German fusilier company.

And let us throw this one in as well, an intriguing long and narrow map board to play with:

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 20 (MCS 2.02)

Size Modifier: (4) 1
Turns: 12
Type: Custom
First Side: Allies

Alan R. Arvold

July, 1944

[Somewhere in Russia] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HYP] [GD]

Screening Action:

Often in defensive operations, light mobile units such as the 69th Armored Reconnaissance Battalion will be called upon to screen the flanks of line units, or to fill a gap in their absence. Ideally, the enemy in these situations, in this case being Group Yegorov, will be delayed by firepower, without decisively engaging the defense.

Scenario Descriptions:

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 21 (MCS 2.02)

[Magnuszew, Poland] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Panzer Division in Defense: After the collapse of Army Group Center, Russian units made great inroads into occupied Poland, some reaching as far as the Vistula River. The Russian 16th Tank Corps, of the 2nd Tank Army, crossed at Magneszew (pronounced MAG-noo-shev) and was stopped by the 19th Panzer and Herman Goering Divisions, just 40 miles south of Warsaw, which was gripped by a major Polish uprising.

[ALL: OPT] [2.02]

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 22 (MCS 2.02)

[Tarnet Norway] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Installation Defense: When Finland dropped out of the war, the German 20th Mountain Army, operating on the Arctic coast, found it necessary to withdraw into Norway. Soviet forces did not enter Finland but did cross the narrow Russo-Norwegian frontier in pursuit. The Germans, pausing to evacuate civilians and material through the port of Kirkenes, nearly came to grief when the city's electric power supply was threatened.
Here elements of the German 141st Mountain Infantry Regiment, of the 6th Mountain Division, defend the electrical generator station in Tarnet from units of the Soviet 14th Rifle Division from the 131st Rifle Corps.

[ALL: OPT] [2.02]

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 23 (MCS 2.02)

[Debrecen, Hungary] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Meeting Engagement: Occasionally during the desperate weeks of autumn, 1944, German panzer units found themselves able and willing to strike back at the Russian onslaught.

Kampfgruppe Woehler, reinforced by fresh units from Budapest, pocketed Cavalry-Mechanized Group "Pliyev" near Debrecen. The Russian 6th Guards Tank Army struck back resulting in one of the wildest melees of the war. Here Group "Pliyev", led by the 7th Mechanized Corps, attempts to breakout of the pocket with the 5th Guards Tank Corps leading the 6th Guards Tank Army's effort to break through to them. Caught in the middle is Kampfgruppe Woehler desperately trying to contain Group "Pilyev" so other German forces can destroy it before it can escape.

[ALL: OPT] [2.02]

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 24 (MCS 2.02)

[Balaklava Sector] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Soviet Assault on Fortifications: At the end of the spring, 1944 campaign in the Crimea, German and Rumanian forces were being pushed into an ever-shrinking ring around Sevastopol. As the Kriegsmarine and Rumanian Navy attempted to evacuate the 17th Army, the rear guard occupied a final defensive line just outside the city.

The Russian objective in the southern end of the line was the Sapun Heights, from where artillery could cover the whole anchorage. Here units of the Russian 19th Tank Corps and 2nd Guards Rifle Division, which are both from the Independent Coastal Army, engage an infantry regiment from the German 98th Infantry Division.

[ALL: OPT] [2.02]

Ode to Panzerblitz: Scenario 24 (MCS 2.02)

[Madona Sector, Latvia] [AXIS/ALLIED] [HISB] [GD]

Blocking Action: The collapse of Army Group Center left Army Group North stranded in the Baltic States. As Army Group North withdrew into an enclave on the Courland peninsula, Russian spearheads reached out, attempting to split the Germans and defeat them in detail.

The worst crisis came when the Russian 2nd Baltic Front smashed the German 10th Corps at Madona, opening up the way to Riga. The Russian 10th Tank Corps was sent to capture the city and stop the evacuation of Estonia and Latvia. The German 11th SS Panzergrenadier Division "Nordland" was sent to block the Russian advance.
