This was a very (in)famous episode....

Aintree 1935. The Germans had two entries for the main race, The Grand National.

Both jockeys were keen to impress Adolf Hitler, who was visiting the UK at the time and was invited to the race meeting.

Unfortunately both German soldiers ...er jockeys... quickly realised that being 6 foot tall and weighed down with infantry garb was not a recipe for speed and thus success in the race. Fortunately one of the men remembered that he brought his trusty Mauser and decided to pick off the other riders before going on to claim a German 1-2...

Well, as the 1st Kavalrie Korps motto goes:

If you can't beat 'em, shoot 'em

Leutnant Krebbs was a crack marksman, one expert shot bringing down three horses at Beechers Brook alone.

Actually you are right Zorch. In the 1935 Grand National Giraffes were allowed for the first time, and there was one in this race (named Neville Chamberlain's four headed sex beast).

Unfortunately Leutnant Krebbs had suffered a shoulder injury while in the Hitler youth when he accidentally fell off a communist he was jumping up and down on.

As a result he had no means of elevating his arm and so needed to adopt the position pictured in order to take out said long necked animal. Krebbs took the animal out at the second attempt and after the race proudly posed by the poor animal.

That's not a meteorite - that is after Mick Jagger, wearing lipstick, gave her a kiss on the tummy.
