Fact sheet: Kagero class destroyers(Japanese)

Post by m10bob »

Between 1939 and 1941 Japan built a radically new type of destroyer, the Kagero class.
Rather than the guns being the main weapon, it featured torpedo tubes of the famous "Long Lance" type, with quick (approx 20 minutes)reload capability.
These were also larger than the older Minekaze type (which for years had been the mainstay of the Japanese Navy)..
The guns mounted were dual purpose, so they too were "top of the line" when introduced.
One Kagero class was the first Japanese destroyer to mount RADAR of any Japanese destroyer, (in 1942)..

Of course it was never enough. Only 19 built vs 175 Fletchers.

"Quantity has a quality of its own"

Add to that:
"The Bensons and Gleaves arrived in two batches. First 24 and later 72 “repeat” Bensons and Gleaves..."

"By VJ Day, exactly 100 ships of these new classes—55 Sumners and 45 Gearings—plus an additional 12 Robert H. Smith-class light minelayers, had been placed in commission."

His memoirs are highly recommended reading.
I made exceptional effort to understand why one would try to deny existing fact and disclaim well documented history. I failed.
