How to use Wirraways

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

I am having high, "non moving" inventory issues with the CAC Wirraway... and they keep building it regardless... my warehouses might run out of space [;)]

other than the few planes needed as trainers; is there any use for this little plane?

Maybe I should try to convince my Australians friends about the wonders of kamikaze missions [:D]

ASW patrol?

Good idea, but too short ranged... too small bomb load. The also abundant Hudson is a much better option

The greatest need for ASW is in close proximity to main port hubs which Wirraways do a fine job of protecting.

Early game training for a few months, but then naval search.

On naval search they will spot subs out to 5 hexes, giving you a good chance of preventing attacks around rear area ports in Oz, if in fact it is a rear area. They won't attack subs all that often, but they will spot them!

Free's up other models for more serious work until you upgrade to a better plane.

Australia comes with virtually no trained pilots at the start. I use every whirraway unit for training. ASW in times of dire need but only for a short while. Pretty worthless for any other activity.

Wirraways provide the Aussies the best trained bomber force of any Allied nation by late '42.....

trainers and port ASW protection.

Just wish they could be used to train fighter pilots!

Search. Hudson for ASW.
I made exceptional effort to understand why one would try to deny existing fact and disclaim well documented history. I failed.

This is so true in my PBEM game!

I have most Australian/ NZ squadrons doing nothing other than training since early december... I guess the consequence of an India oriented campaign

Kinda begs a similar question - what do you do with the Indian AF???

Well in my game the many Lysander squadrons are very committed to the campaign, mostly doing recon.
The other crap planes are just trainers

Same here except I use the lone Blenny 1 squad for ASW.

Later in '43 after many of their squads withdraw and return as better models or upgrade to better models their AF becomes more useful.

The few times I've played Allies I've tended to use them on CAS missions, particularly where Japanese air cover is weak. If I'm desperate, I'll put them on Naval attack as a last ditch measure (there are much better planes for attacking ships).

They have their uses, just not near anything that can shoot back.

I train my Aussie bomber pilots for ASW in Wirraways then change the squadron to something with more range like Hudsons when their skills get up there. When Allied ASW improves, the Aussies become lethal at it. The Japanese subs lurking off Australia's east coast disappear in fairly short order. Mostly due to damage.

Except for emergency sorties in early '42, I've used them only for training.

But Wirraways have two accurate MGs in CL position. Why can't they be {louse) fighters?

Use some of them to do general training. When they get to 50% experience put them in a fighter sqd. and by the time you get their escort exp. to 70 their defensive skills and other sometimes useful skills will be high.
