Why is it that the ship in the background has the 'orca' markings?

Looks to me as USS Harry Lee (APA-10), without forward cranes (booms? - I am not sure about the naval terminology...)

To make it just a bit harder for those "Google historians" to search on a particular hull number or designation.

It has a lot of life rafts for a banana boat. (Sorry, I couldn't resist [:)])

I would have picked it as an xAP of some sort....

According to DANFS she & second sister were briefly used as troop transports in mid 42 in the Pacific before becoming strictly cargo/stores haulers for the duration. Three other sisters were employed solely in the Atlantic & Med hauling cargo & stores.

Good call, afspret. You win the...banana. [8D]

Indeed a refrigerated stores and provisions ship. Originally working for the United Fruit Company, she saw quite a bit of wartime action with the recommissioning in the USN as the AF-12. Lots of action, where she served with distinction. She averaged 5,000 miles a month throughout the war. A real unsung workhorse. A kick-ass banana boat! [&o]

My father served on her sister ship USS Ariel in 45. Never made it to pacific but did go to Iceland. He was sea sick most of the time and would rest on the decks when at sea. I think I posted her picture a few years back.

Floating grocery stores - VERY popular. In the Cold War a number of UNREP ships (AE's for sure) would get basically a freezer trailer and a refrigerator trailer near the bow for a deployment. Fill up when you can, give some away but we ate better than we would have without the trailers up front.

Mmm... Food ship...

I made exceptional effort to understand why one would try to deny existing fact and disclaim well documented history. I failed.
