April Storm - 1 - The New Eastern Front, 1996 -- new beta for testing

Post by Mgellis »

Here is a beta version of the first scenario in the April Storm, 1996 campaign, which posits a war between NATO and Russia sparked by a Russian invasion of eastern Poland (which Russia claims actually belongs to it).

This first scenario is a fairly large one, with many aircraft, SAM units, etc.

As always, I would be grateful for feedback on any and all aspects of the scenario...how well it plays, if the Events are working correctly (they're incomplete in this version...only scoring is being done, no messages, etc.), if the orders are written properly (including how the "extra instructions" are handled), if the whole thing is plausible, fun, etc. Thanks. I look forward to reading your comments.

Played it.
-You probably should ungroup the Russian SAMs in eastern Poland. They were causing havoc on the message log when they faded in and out of contact, to the point where I had to change the log settings to prevent it from overloading.
-I noticed some fighters crossing into the Czech Republic and Slovakia-was that deliberate?

Nice scenario, once those Su-27's get within knife fighting range, they play hell on my fighters. Most of my A-A losses where caused by Su-27's getting close and unleashing, off angle, AA-11 hell on my fighters (this is what killed most of my F-16's). The Phantoms and F-15's where mostly lost due to your little SAM trap near the coast.. This little surprise cost me 6 F-4's and 5 F-15's alone :(

It's interesting that operations get a lot harder when you near the Polish border, the trip there takes quite some time and fuel and if you time it wrong your fighters will run dry while being jumped by the enemy.

Overall, well done. (Although the scenario gets a little repetitive after a few hours (arrange cap, hit SAM sites etz etz etz.) Maybe put in a surprise strike mission, or long range penetration towards your tankers, that you will need to defend against?

W.

Just posted version 3. A few more tweaks. Gave the Russians a few more planes and modified one of their patrols to make it more effective. Should be a bit more of a challenge now, I think.

I'm assuming the Polish air force was one of the first casualties of the invasion--the Poles had quite a few planes at the time, but most of them were Mig-21s and Su-22s. Between cruise missiles launched at air bases and Su-27s and MiG-29s able to fire BVR missiles...I'm assuming the Poles took down some Russian aircraft but were eventually overwhelmed. At this point, the only Polish aircraft left are the ones that escaped to neighboring countries. These may play a part in future scenarios, though.

Why is the Luftwaffe absent ? I see just some USAF airbases with their equipment.

If it's supposed to be NATO reaction, i'm just somehow missing German Tornados and F-4Fs/MiG-29s. Luftwaffe could have around 400 combat A/Cs back then and I guess that they would be the force that would be employed in such scenario.

The SAM systems should also be a mixed bag, half of the SAMS systems were Patriots already.

I would have AEW set up as a support mission orbiting around a single reference point, but that's not really a problem, more of a note.

My losses were 15 aircraft, enemy lost around 60 aircraft and around 20 of various SAM-related vehicles. Score 960 Triumph. The second half is mostly screensaver-like game, I had missions setup and once I got patrol/prosecution areas tuned, it was AI against AI.

Interestingly, I had jammer orbiting 20 NM SE Berlin. Su-27S from Donskoye (or Chkalovsk maybe), took off and went after it on afterburner only to turn back for bingo fuel just short of my SAM coverage. Were they going inside my SAM range, I would have killed more. In the scenario, SAMs do not get much work, I played through with zero NATO SAMs fired.

Ahaha, I figured I can drive Patriots forward. I-HAWK too, though I thought of these as of emplaced sites somehow. Guess that was wrong, one can drive I-HAWK too.

Thanks for catching that one. You're not supposed to...or, rather, I didn't want to make the scenario even bigger and more complicated by adding Soviet forces capable of dealing with them. I've added a note explaining that in the briefing.

Yes, moving SAMS forward I reached 2000+ score with 100+ aircraft killed. Had to edit the scenario for more missiles (AMRAAMs) in meanwhile. Really, with air combat that intense, I get Triumph before even launching SEAD missions, and there is not enough AMRAAMs.

I played this and got a triumph @ 540. I was micromanaging and using 2, 2 ship flights (4 of them in fact), using 1 flight to lure the attackers and another to flank them and launch missiles. It worked out very well. Then I had my SEAD flights go after the SAMS with a few 2 ship flights of escorts to cover. I noticed enemy fighters that seemed to be refueling so I went after the 2 tankers and I got a victory after they got destroyed.

Just my opinion, but maybe adjust the victory condition to have a few SAMS or radars destroyed before a victory condition is met.

Nice scenario.

Triumph 540 pts just over 3 hrs into the fight. I surged all 15's & 16's and cleaned up the air, was just moving to start SEAD but game ended. Role up below, here are a couple points - not biggies:

-The NATO AWACs, although they are registered to Luxemburg (home of the NATO procurement agency, used to be NAMSA) but they are based in Geilenkirchen Germany (back gate is actually in Netherlands) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_Air_B ... lenkirchen
-Normally 3 of the AWACs would be in Norway, 3 at Incerlic Turkey and 3 in Ancona Italy, while the remainder would run at least 2 constant patrols in Europe. So it would be realistic to have one up and monitoring at the start of the game.
-The F4G Wild Weasel, I like them but I believe the ones in Europe were replaced with Blk 50 F-16s in the early 90's. The last F4 Weasels were in the UFAF ANG stateside and retired in 96.
-Was getting constant "Base Contact Group XXXX has been lost messages. I think that this is because the Sov SAMS and Radars were grouped
-Ramping up for this OP, I think the Ftrs would be set to 'Quick turn around' at start
-Was getting desperate because I was all out of A2A ftrs early, my fault for surging them. But the remainder were all set to 3hrs until ready. Might be reasonable to stager this a bit with some ready in an hour, some at 2 hrs and some at 4 or even 5 hrs
-I agree with an earlier comment that you should be required to hit some SAMs before getting a Game Win
-Scoring might be a bit easy

Like the game, thanks

I just uploaded Version 5. I incorporated a number of suggestions, especially the ones from Gunner98. Scoring has been changed (you now need 900 for a triumph), E-3s are now based at the right air base, F-4s have been removed, etc. I also added what I hope will be a couple of good surprises.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
