A Japanese sub in the Makassar straits puts a torpedo into the AK escorting/towing the Dewey dry-dock. Damage is light to moderate so I dispatch a new tow ship from Soerabaja to head out and replace the stricken cargo vessel. I also create a couple ASW task forces to head out and hunt for the sub to try and keep its head down.

I rebased the Marine Corp dive bombers back to Singkawang last turn due to the fact recon spotted a Japanese task forces heading towards Kuching. I guess my opponent sent a bombardment group towards Singkawang and it didn’t quite reach the base ending its turn at sea one hex northeast of the base.

The Marines launched two attacks on the surface group that went in unopposed, but only managed to hit a CL in the fleet. It’s reported sunk on the ships list, but there are two fleets in the hex at turn start and damage did not look too severe in the combat replay, so I think that’s a false report.

The two dive bombers sent after the invasion fleet were lost due to LRCAP over the fleet. I do have fighters at Singkawang, but none flew for some reason.

My small Wirraway squadron at Kuching launched a few attacks in the area as well but failed to hit anything and was torn up by the LRCAP.

With fatigue high and a bombardment fleet one hex away, I pull the dive bombers off of Singkawang for now. I hate not opposing the landing at Kuching next turn but I cannot afford to lose any planes to shore bombardments as I have no replacements currently.

A second Marine Corps dive bomber squadron arrives in the DEI’s this turn and is sent to Kendari for now. With two dive bomber squadrons operating in theater now, my opponent will probably bring KB in soon to start to cover his naval moves.

Japan lands at Manado this turn and finds the base unoccupied. No landing occurred at Cagayan, so I guess the battleships were just hunting for victims last turn.

As expected Japan bombards Singkawang and slams the base causing moderate damage. With no engineers present this pretty much puts it out of action and I stand down the float planes to get the damaged ones repaired so I can fly them out at a future time.

A small CL task force shows up and bombards Rabaul as well, but damage is light and shouldn’t prevent air ops. The Australians stationed there also have a few engineer squads, so it’’ll be harder for him to put Rabaul out of action.

The landing goes in at Kuching and our single ready coastal defense gun (2nd gun was disabled) manages to score a few penetrating hits on an AK leaving it afire and trailing thick smoke. Japan also loses a few squads coming ashore so hopefully his disruption is high. Japanese shore bombardments are ineffectual, but my small ground forces aren’t very experienced and morale is low as well.

In the Makassar straits a Japanese sub slams CL Marblehead with a single torpedo causing heavy damage. Later in the day a long range Betty torpedo attack apparently has its aim disrupted by my tiny LRCAP patrol over the fleet and no hits were scored. This dangerous strike attempt combined with the damage to the Marblehead convinces me it’s time to get my surface group out of dodge.

With a Marine Corps dive bomber squadron at Balikpapan to dissuade any Japanese surface fleets from trying to run down the dry-dock I think I’ll be safe from surface threats at this point. I left some old US 4 stacker DDs to follow the dry-dock’s task force as ASW protection.

I'll be doing a big workup adding it all up on the 7th of each month for a full one month tally. But it is definitely going to be plentiful in this mod so there is going to be enough supply that I'll be able to work out actual consumption once the armies are all repaired I think. Remember this version of the mod was specifically designed to give me too much supply so I can work out how much actually gets used so in the future I’ll have an accurate usage number I can use to make a more permanent final mod with.

I currently only have perhaps 4 bases with low supply levels either in the orange or red, the rest are all in the white. That said there still hasn’t been a lot of heavy fighting yet with Ichang being the exception, so consumption will go up once Japan gets his house in order and begins to push back all across the country.

Only kind providence has allowed the Dewey dry-dock to get as far as it has in game and I guess its luck was bound to run out sometime. This turn it is finally hunted down by the Empire and a Japanese sub puts a torpedo into its side causing heavy flooding. With 49 float damage (36 major) and a speed of zero it looks like its time is almost up. I put 3 more DD’s into its task force to try and fight off the subs (4 more are in an ASW task force following), but at this stage it’ll only make 1 hex a day if its lucky so it looks grim. I’ll scuttle it in another turn or two if flooding begins to go up.

Unexpectedly a Japanese surface fleet makes a deep raid to try and interdict the dry-dock and my small ASW fleet tasked to follow the dry-dock fleet engages them. Considering how outgunned they were I was lucky to get off so light with only one DD suffering moderate to heavy damage.

Japan was also lucky in that two air attacks launched by my Marine dive bombers in the AM phase got lost due to thunderstorms and were unable to locate their targets.

I’ve decided to go ahead and do the big supply work up today since it’s the 1st of the month. I’ll continue doing these each month on the 1st from now on. So the totals this turn are:

Supply production: 50 bases producing 6270 per turn (100 about to be lost)

Supply in bases: 168,983

Supply in units: 79,320

Total supply: 248,303

I calculate the Chinese begin with 196,131 supplies (see post #1). So subtracting that from this turns total of 248,303 gives us a growth of 52, 172 supplies over the past 25 turns.

If you multiply a supply production of 6270 by 25 turns you have produced a total of 156,750 new supplies since the game started (several bases weren’t captured till recently so the actual total supply produced is less).

So currently China is burning in excess of 100,000 supplies a month and its army is still at 50% disablement levels. I’m now a little worried that once units are repaired and combats commence in earnest there will yet be too little supply in China to feed the whole army.
The way I see it there are two unknown variables that will determine if there is still too little supply being produced even with these current mod changes in play.

First whether or not disabled devises use supply each turn or not. My understanding is they do not use any supply but Yaab has challenged that in the forums recently and he may be right that they use 50% of what good order devices use. So if Yaab is right then the rough consumption number of 100k will only go up about 25% to 125k instead of the 50% I assume it will go up once the disabled part of the army repairs.

The next variable is spoilage. It is very possible that a big part of the 100k+ number we see is due to base transfer spoilage this early in game. Once supply stocks at all the individual bases balance out and bases no longer want/need to move large blocks of supply around the map we may see that 100k number fall off drastically. Unfortunately I know of no way to track spoilage loss so at this point we just have to wait and see as supply stocks slowly grow at all the bases and eventually big base transfers stop occurring.

Forgot to add the Burma Road income, so that's another 12,500 produced for a total of 169,250 produced over the first 25 turns. Subtracting the growth number of 52,172 means in 25 turns China has burned through 117,078 supplies. That's a burn rate of 4,683 supplies a turn currently which exceeds the 4,200 supplies a day or so that gets produced in stock.

That 4,200 number includes the Burma Road income, so as you can see China hasn’t got nearly enough supply to live off of in stock even before the disabled part of its army gets repaired.

You can track spoilage in Tracker. Basically, spoilage means 1,2-1,5% of total supply/fuel at a given base will be lost each turn.

Base A

We assume base A receives 1,000 new supplies each turn.

turn1: 9000 supplies at the base (spoilage kicks in)
turn 2:10,000 supplies Spoilage will be 10,000 x 1,2-1,5% = 120-150 supplies destroyed = 9,850-9,880 at base
turn 3: 9,880+1,000 = 10,880 x 1,2-1,5% spoilage etc.

Basically, as long as stocks are above warehousing levels, you lose 1,2-1,5% of their total on each turn, until they decrease to fit within base warehousing limits.

While a supply growth of 50k might seem like a big number at first, that’s barely 1,000 per base controlled, so base spoilage due to over-stocked supplies located at bases won’t be an issue for quite some time if ever. I was referring to supplies lost when transferring supply between bases. This kind of spoilage can see a max of 20% I think of the supply lost to spoilage depending on the transportation net and terrain crossed, so I am thinking perhaps a lot of the 100k+ number we are seeing consumed here might be due to transfer spoilage.

But every base has its own small production capacity of at least 80, so perhaps there isn’t a lot of transferring going on. We’ll just have to be patient and see how things develop once every base is in the white and any transfers that might be occurring currently stop occurring.

Back on the issue mentioned about base spoilage due to over-stock. I should mention I am using a self imposed house rule of not building a bases airfield above level 2 with Chinese engineers unless it’s an urban location. Only urban hexes can be built beyond level 2 with Chinese engineers. Any other base must have US or other foreign engineers present before I’ll build them above level 2.

This is not something I spoke to my opponent about, I just decided to do it to slow down development of Chinese airfields. Also in a tighter supply game the cost of expanding airfields would/should prohibit China from doing a lot of base construction except at a few select locations until a large air lift can be established to bring in additional supplies, so I wanted to simulate that if I could with this rule. So for now I only have the lone US Base Force unit in China that is currently building up Tsuyung so I can use the base for supply transfers.

Not that I’ll be doing any supply transfers, I want to keep supply numbers to just what gets produced and consumed in China so I can track it, so I won’t be flying in any new supplies. But I will be setting up the normal supply operation and basing lots of transport aircraft in Ledo as I normally would. So I’ll build up bases as normal and get the supply operation set up before I look to expand any inland bases.

Japan invades Davao this turn. I’ve consolidated all forces on Mindanao at Malaybalay, the mountain hex in the center of the island. The airfield there is 91% of the way to completing a level 2 field which will allow local harassing attacks if I decide to rebase a dive bomber squadron in occasionally. I have the 21 P-35A fighters and 12 P-26A fighters along with 13 Stearman 75M recon planes stationed there currently.

My hope is the non-Malarial terrain combined with the defensive benefits of mountain terrain will allow my green conscript troops to put up a tougher fight than usual and perhaps hold out till most of the 7300+ supplies are used up. With a current supply usage number of 1300+ while not in combat, I figure there is enough supply on the island to last 3 months under combat conditions.

A Japanese sub tries to finish off CL Marblehead which is still struggling to reach Soerabaja. Thankfully the British DD assigned to guard the ship fends off the sub and manages to score a few hits, one of which was reported as critical damage.

This probably saved the Marblehead as its now just a couple hexes from Soerabaja. The Dewey dry-dock is perhaps going to make it as well since a few points of flood damage have been repaired and it no longer shows a speed of 0, so it is again making 2 hexes a day.

I noticed convoy WS.14/OS.14 sitting at Capetown this turn. It’s chock full of much needed devices for my replacement pools. It will disband in a couple of days.

I lost the 1st Mysore Battalion today destroyed at Port Swettenham. The battalion ran into a move bug issue a few turns back that saw its move plot reset to none due to the fact the Japanese entered its hex the same turn it was plotted to rail out towards Singapore. Then for the next couple of turns its plotted move to leave was reset every turn until the Japanese finally attacked it knocking it off the rail into Port Swettenham.

Its loss isn’t a huge deal but the sequential nature of the land moves (Japanese units always move first) in game means if the allies want to rail out of a location they need to do it before Japanese unit enters their hex.

In Burma two RTA divisions have been advancing through the jungle. One has been sitting SE of Moulmein for about a week and the other just arrived due east of Pegu this turn. I think I see an opportunity here. I’ll be sending the entire Burma Division to hold onto Moulmein (currently only the 13th brigade is there) against the southern RTA division and I’ll leave Pegu lightly defended.

I’m hoping to draw the weak RTA division into attacking Pegu since I can then bring in more British strength to kill it before serious combat capable Japanese units can arrive to save it. The hard part will be managing to isolate it from supply which I can’t do unless he advances it another hex. If he does advance it, I’ll then abandon Moulmein and use the Burma division to cut it off from the south and east and use newly arriving British/Indian units to handle its reduction at Pegu.

Then the trick will be keeping enough LRCAP over Pegu once he owns it to prevent new units from being air lifted in too quickly.

An allied S boat attacks a Japanese convoy sailing along the west side of Luzon and scores a hit on an AK loaded with troops. This is probably the best allied sub attack so far in the war, my subs simply haven’t been finding much of anything to shoot at. A second S boat tries another attack later in the day on the same convoy but its torpedoes miss their target.

I wanted to show the area around Burma in this turns screenshot. You can see the two RTA divisions I mentioned last turn, one East of Pegu the other Southeast of Moulmein. Additionally I can see one unit at Chiang Mai with some strength info given (I’ve got recon planes at Magwe). Given the size of the unit I think this may be another RTA division he has railed in. Far to the south there is an unknown unit marching north along the road.

I’m currently pulling everything out of Moulmein except the Burma division. It shall remain so it can march Northeast and cut off the RTA division to the north should it march west into Pegu. I’ve begun buying out the Chinese divisions and will start flying them into Lashio to get them into Burma ASAP. The large chunk of the Kowloon Brigade I saved (80 or so AV) is still east of Kunming marching west, but I think it should be able to arrive in Burma in time to help defend Lashio if he makes a strong early push.

I’m actually finding myself hoping he does make an early push. With the majority of his good Japanese formations tied up reducing Singapore I’ll have a chance to train up my crappy Burmese forces fighting his crappy Siamese forces. So perhaps I can mold my guys into a decent fighting force before the Japanese arrive. Then again maybe the Siamese can steam roll the Burmese, I don’t know but it should be fun finding out.

Two more sub attacks on the Dewey dry-dock are repelled. My anti-sub assets have been doing an amazing job of keeping the dry-dock afloat. With only another 2 or 3 turns needed to get it into port at Soerabaja it’s becoming quite the nail biter opening the turn file each turn to see if it finally succumbs to another Japanese torpedo.

Japan lands via naval invasion at Subic Bay with the fleet my subs attacked last turn. I was a bit surprised by this move as the way is open for him to simply march into the hex overland. A look at the rest of his stacks in Luzon shows them all plotted to march into Clark or Manila, so perhaps this is part of a planned coordinated assault on all locations at once.

Whatever his reasoning I’m just glad the lone coastal defense unit I left alone to die in Subic Bay had a chance to do some damage to his ships before it dies.

My defense on Luzon was set up taking stacking limits into consideration. The only hex in all of Luzon capable of holding all the forces on Luzon without suffering severe stacking limit penalties is Manila. So my main defense on the island will center on Manila. I would exceed stacking limits by more than double in any other hex so it is pure supply suicide to try and defend anywhere else when playing with the stacking limits map.

I managed to ship in about 7700 supplies in the opening month, so there is now roughly 75000 supplies stockpiled at Manila and another 2500 at Clark. The last combat capable unit scheduled to appear appeared as reinforcement at Bataan recently and is currently marching to Manila. Once it reaches Clark I’ll order everything at Clark to march to Manila.

I would have much preferred the traditional defend at Clark as long as possible and retreat to the final supply hex defense, but I’m forced to focus everything at Manila early due to the fact if I stay at Clark units will retreat to Bataan instead of Manila and will be trapped there out of supply. So I have to march them to Manila before they get defeated at Clark if I want their combat power added to my defense at Manila.

Currently there is 763 AV at Clark and 914 AV at Manila (Manila has all my artillery too). The lone regiment that arrived at Bataan recently has 75 AV, so if everything makes it to Manila there will be close to 1800 AV for defense there.

The first sign I’ve seen of Japanese carriers in quite a while occurred this turn when zeroes from mini KB flew a couple sweep missions over Malaybalay. My fighters of course were totally outclassed and got swept away with little effort.

With KB not seen for almost a month, I’m starting to wonder if he doesn’t have some out of the way operation underway. Perhaps a landing in the North Pacific or perhaps even a strike at Pearl?

I shouldn’t complain though, with KB nowhere to be seen the first resupply convoys from Capetown started landing at Java today. They will more than replace the supply I sent forward from Java and will add at least an additional 25k to my supply stocks on the island.

In Burma another unit appeared south of Moulmein this turn that had not been seen before at all as it marched north through the jungle trail regions. I spent quite a while pondering things this turn and have decided to scrap my plans of defending Moulmein with the intention of trying to trap an RTA division should it advance on Pegu.

The entire idea was predicated upon the ability of the Burma Division to fend off any attacks from the units to the south and I assumed the division could handle one or perhaps even two RTA divisions. But it now looks like a lot more stuff may be coming north along the trails south of Moulmein and I’ve decided to get out of the exposed forward position at Moulmein while I can.

Instead the Burma division will defend at Pegu and I’ll conduct a more traditional defense along the river that parallels the rail line north of there. The Chinese (3 divisions already purchased) will be able to defend Taungoo and the jungle hexes and the British and Indian forces will handle Pegu and the other rail line hexes. But I’ll have my finger hovering over the bug-out button and will plan to leave if things look too grim.

I’ve gone ahead and ordered the bases in northern Burma to begin stockpiling large stocks of supplies so hopefully they will pull most of the supply in country up north before Japan can threaten Rangoon. If I had another month or so I might be able to stay in the south of Burma and fight but I think he has simply come at me in Burma too soon. It takes time to get stuff into country and he hasn’t given me enough time so I may simply have to abandon the south if too much stuff appears along the trails near Moulmein in the next week or two.

What will probably turn out to be the last sub attack to occur on the Dewey dry-dock along its long journey from Manila occurred one hex northeast of Soerabaja. The Whippoorwill has performed admirably all the way along the route from Manila and it’s fitting that the small AM ship manages to hit the sub that tried in vain to put another fish into its charge.

The dry-dock still might get hit before it moves in the upcoming night phase of next turn due to the fact it needs to refuel before it can move, but at this point it appears the dry-dock will make port. Damage is heavy with 45 or so float (36 major), so it’s doubtful it’ll ever escape Java. But I’ll give it a try once most of the damage is repaired.

Betties are already ranging into the Makassar straits and with Singkawang apparently about to fall I’m not sure how much time I have left to repair damage before his planes will prevent any escape at all.

Japan defeats the Coastal gun unit at Subic Bay and the remnants retreat to Clark. Amazingly one of the CD guns survives the route so Manila will now have a lone 6 inch gun for coastal defense. Not a huge help but better than nothing once the big CD unit at Bataan goes down.

A large stack of 11 units entered Manila this turn and my recon only reports 600 or so men and 42 tanks. I can’t believe that’s all he’s got there so I decided not to attack/bombard him yet. If it does eventually get confirmed that he’s come light to Manila though, I may decide to stay at Clark and try and keep the CD unit at Bataan alive and active to keep me safe from shore bombardments for as long as possible.

I’ve got lots of recon on Luzon with 2 recon squadrons. One has 10 planes the other has 1 plane, so I would think my recon would be semi-reliable. I’ll give it another turn or two and if his reported numbers stay low I’ll probably switch to attack and see if I can’t go on a short quick offensive to try and capture whatever supplies he’s brought ashore.

All the small units of the Burma division arrive at Pegu this turn and the division is formed up. As you can see in this turns screenshot it’s in pretty decent shape since all of its small units except the 13th Indian brigade have been sitting at Rangoon repairing disablements and recovering morale. Given the fact it’s in pretty decent shape, I’ve decided to flesh it out with as much equipment as I can get into it, so in another week or so it’ll be fleshed out to max device numbers in all but one or two slots.

I have enough artillery in my pools to max its artillery, mortars and AT guns so that will give the division some serious firepower. Once it’s got all its potential guns I think I may decide to head south again and take on the RTA forces he’s brought into Burma. While numerous those troops don’t have the kind of firepower the Burma division will have once it gets max guns into the unit.

I’ve shown the divisions TO&E as well, everything you see except the Indian combat engineers and 40mm bofors will be maxed out.

The Australian Hudson’s at Ambon attack a surface fleet a few hexes north of the island but fail to score any hits. I’m assuming this is a fleet that will conduct a pre-invasion bombardment though no transports are seen. I went ahead and spent some PP this turn on a new leader for the CD unit at Ambon, it’s in pretty decent shape and has enough guns that a good leader may allow it to cause some decent damage to his ships. I’ve shown the unit in this turns screenshot.

The Dewey dry-dock made port and I’ve shown the damaged ships screen in this turns screenshot for Soerabaja. With 28 days needed at pierside (it’s too big for the shipyard) to clear away non-major damage, it looks like I’ll be leaving port with a lot of damage still in effect. I simply don’t have 28 days before Japanese airpower will dominate the region and prevent an escape.

In China I moved an HQ unit into Chuhsien from the west (SE area of map near Wenchow) to regain control of that hexside so supply could flow into the base from Pucheng without having to trace a path off-road. When I turned on hexside control to check that it changed, I noticed something near Kanhsien (clear hex base ENE of Canton). There is apparently a Japanese unit (or several) SE of the base in the clear terrain, but I have no Intel on it at all. This is a bit alarming as I haven’t got my lines in that area fully covered yet. I should have the hex west of Kanhsien and SW of Kukong covered in about 3 or 4 more turns, but the hex NW of the base has a unit on route but it is weeks away.

Hopefully this isn’t a big death stack of Japanese units. I’m inclined to think it’s not, but he has been hammering Kanhsien from the air since almost turn one so I’ve assumed he was coming for it. That’s why I have units already on route to the area, but my lines aren’t quite ready yet.

I’ve shown a lot of China in this turns screenshot. The campaign to squash my guerilla units in his rear areas is just winding down. As you can see I have a few units left off-road, but he’s hammered them all several times and they are probably all about to shatter soon.

I’ve got strong forces (3 corps and an HQ in each) in both hexes occupied by Japan that are adjacent to Changsha, and Changsha itself also has a large force in that hex, so I’m not worried about this front.

I have a unit in the hex NW of Canton and the hex east of it will have a strong corp next turn, so my flanks at Canton will be locked down now and I won’t have to worry about his armor showing up in strength and zooming into my rear areas there.

Sinyang’s flank is secured to the north all the way to Nanyang. I’ll also have the main rail line hexes covered in a few turns, so that area will be solid soon as well.

The three base triangle of Wenchow, Pucheng and Chuhsien is my ace in the hole. Each base has 2 or more Corps now and they are all near enough to stacking limits (Chuhsien is slightly overstacked until the HQ that just arrived leaves again) that I can have some units leave without jeopardizing my defense. Once I have each base dug in to level 4 forts, I’ll release a corps from each to go on offensives to try and threaten his bases in the area.

Other than this last offensive op along the coast to try and pull some of his strength away from the interior, I’ll be switching to defense across the rest of China. I’ve been pretty aggressive over the last month and managed to wrest control of Ichang and two bases far in the NE, but at this point I figure he’s had time to get organized and I better not be too adventurous from now on.

Japan launches three attacks on the Chinese unit that just left Canton to defend the river hex on the western side of the city. Damage to the unit is significant enough to get my attention. Changing the focus of his air attacks from hitting my units in Canton to hitting this unit leads me to believe he may intend a crossing so I’ll be looking to reinforce this hex.

An allied air attack from Magwe today confirmed he has another RTA division at Chiang Mai as I suspected. I then hit the unit that just captured Moulmein from Rangoon and I am surprised to see he already has a Japanese infantry Regiment in Burma.

With his units in Malaya still 4 bases north of Singapore I’m starting to wonder if he even intends to siege Singapore. I may need to re assess Singapore and I may start looking to pull troops out of there if he’s going into Burma this early with a lot of his combat capable stuff. I’m also starting to think I may need to evacuate southern Burma early before he can trap my guys, what does everyone think?

Well allied recon is proved to be almost worthless on Luzon. The most Japanese strength my recon ever reported was about 5000 men at Manila, so I went ahead and did a bombardment attack. The last real air to air battles above Manila are fought this turn. Both my remaining fighter squadrons lose all but a couple planes and manage to down 4 betties and 2 zeroes in the fighting. Tarakan gets invaded this turn and Japanese ships get hit from both the air and shore batteries. Unfortunately none of my Dutch fighter escorts showed up over the target so I lost a total of 4 Marine Vindicators today, 2 in air to air and 2 to ops on landing. The allied bombardment attack shows we have near equal strength, so unless more troops are due to land tomorrow today’s results may have cost Japan enough to keep this landing from taking the hex without reinforcements.

In China recon finally gets a peek at the units in the hex SE of Kanhsien spotted the other day. So far all I see is one unit moving in a SW direction, so apparently this is a unit from the Nanchang area transiting towards the Canton area. I should have two more Corps near Kukong in a day or two, so this unit won’t be able to cause much mischief if it’s an armor unit.

No report last turn as not much happened of interest.

A Japanese force of multiple fleets arrives at Rabaul and invades. The bombardment fleets slam the base causing heavy damage to the base and destroying over 75% of the supplies I had on hand. Last turn there was over 4000 (closer to 5000 if you include supplies in the units) supplies and this turn there is only a bit over 700 at the base plus what the units have.

Given our comparative AV I doubt the Lark Force battalion can hold, though as this turns screenshot shows they are still in pretty decent shape and almost 100% prepped for the base behind level 2 forts, so they might last a turn or two if the Japanese disruption is high.

Very strange air battle in China this turn. The AVG flying LRCAP over the hex west of Canton gets hammered by Japanese Tojo’s. The Tojo’s were not in the initial intercept and the bombers cleared through without being attacked at all. Then the bombers were intercepted again after their raid and this time Tojo’s were present and tore up the AVG. I’m at a loss to explain how this happened other than perhaps the Tojo’s were also flying LRCAP and got sucked into the second fight somehow. That or perhaps the escorts from the second raid that day were allowed to get involved even though they were part of a different raid, weird battle for sure.

I lost 4 planes in air to air and 2 to ops (report is FOW), so it looks like it’s time to pull back and lick my wounds. I must say the AVG’s performance has been pretty bad thus far, they definitely do not feel like a dominate fighter group at all.

In Burma there are now 5 units reported on the road just south of Pegu. With a 6th unit still to the east of Pegu and perhaps even more stuff not seen yet further south, I’ve decided it’s probably best to bug out of southern Burma soon. I’ve given orders for most units west of Pegu to pack up and leave and the Burma Division will act as rear guard and begin a slow withdraw after the bases to its west are evacuated.

I’ll continue to shuttle in Chinese units and send them to Taungoo, but I may decide to send them north as well once I get a look at exactly what those 5 units are. If he has more than one Japanese combat regiment or some Japanese armor I’ll completely abandon all of southern Burma all the way north to the dot base of Katha.

I probably have enough strength in country to face one or even 2 Japanese divisions if everything is fighting in one hex, but I definitely do not have enough strength in country to fight a mobile battle over the good transportation nets in the south. If I stay he’d be able to outmaneuver me and destroy my guys in detail.

It’s now time to begin pondering just what is he up to. He has been very slow in his move towards Singapore and is still three bases north of there with just a lone regiment seen. So it looks like he’s decided to pretty much bypass Singapore and do a rush move into Burma, but what does he gain by this move?

I’ve begun pulling stuff out of Singapore and will accelerate that process now as it appears he has no intention of conducting a large siege there. I’ve sent the 11th Indian Division and the armored cavalry regiment to India. Everything else I manage to evacuate will go to either Sumatra or Java. I’ll leave at least a full division to defend Singapore to the last, but at this point it looks like he intends to bypass Singapore so it makes no sense to try and leave everything I have there sitting idle waiting for supply to dry up. I’m still able to get supplies into Java, so if I move most stuff there it should last quite a while longer than it would at Singers.

Japan slams Rabaul from the sea again today and the base is easily taken later in the turn. My troops suffered about 1/3rd casualties and about half the remaining stuff is disabled. I’ll evacuate what I can, but with close to 80 motorized support still in the battalion a lot will be left behind to whither away and starve.

My opponent must have gotten annoyed at the AVG and flew an unescorted strike to slam Kweilin’s airfield this turn. Damage is moderate to heavy but no planes were lost on the ground. I had intended to stand down my AVG squadron and give it some R&R, but I must have forgotten to make the change since they flew LRCAP over the hex on the west side of Canton again this turn.

Japan must have been trying to time his escorts for when I was flying and his unescorted raid was caught by surprise. The air losses report shows 12 Sonia’s as lost in air to air this turn, so the AVG gets some payback for their recent setbacks. With their airbase in rough shape, I made sure to rebase the survivors back to Chungking this turn to begin their R&R period.

He launched a bombing run this turn and I’ve decided to begin bombarding his units there with the few small land units I have available with some artillery in their TO&E. Another aggressive Japanese sub chases a supply fleet into shallow waters at one of my ports. This one managed to put a torpedo into an AK and caused heavy damage, but paid for his aggressiveness. 11 hits were scored on the sub and I’ve got my fingers crossed he’s too far from a friendly port to make safe harbor.

One thing I’ve learned the hard way in this game, if you’re going to use aggressive sub commanders make sure their patrol routes keep them in deep waters. It’s suicide for subs to press home attacks no matter what in shallow waters. It appears my opponent is in the process of learning this lesson himself, his subs have been getting hit pretty hard this game.

In the forest hex due east of Changsha my opponent launches his first bombardment attack to get a look at my units there. I finally managed to save up enough P-40’s to swap out one of the AVG squadron’s planes this turn. Eventually I’ll swap all three squadrons and that will give my Chinese some planes in their replacement pools to use to fill up some of their fighter squadrons. Given how poorly the AVG has been performing I may even swap one of their squadrons to P-39s instead of making all three P-40s.

I’m starting to wonder if my opponent has forgotten about the troops he landed at Singkawang. He has still made no attempt to take the base there even though I’ve now managed to pull most combat capable stuff off the base and sent it to Palembang. I still have some air support units and a fragment of armor from the land unit that couldn’t be lifted, but generally speaking the base is undefended.

On an alarming note a Japanese torpedo plane was reported as being spotted over one of the islands near Pearl this turn. I’m hoping this is simply FOW miss-reporting of a Japanese sub search plane, but to be safe I’ve placed all B-17s on search missions this turn to augment my PBY search planes in the area.

A Dutch sub finds a victim in the waters around Manado and sinks the ship after two attacks. Being worth 12 VP makes this the highest valued Japanese ship I’ve sunk so far. The CL on the reports screen is FOW I believe, though it is possible it went down while trying to return to port, I won’t know for sure for another couple months I think.

I sent a group of British Cruisers in a small fleet to bombard Moulmein and damage was decent. After ending the turn at Rangoon and finishing refueling, the fleet has full ops points available this turn. I’ve given the task force full speed orders to head for Colombo. Hopefully the fleet will be far enough away that Japanese Betty’s won’t be able to find it.

I gained a little Intel from this bombardment as well, the 2nd RTA Division was hit at Moulmein, so that means that Japan has a total of 8 units known within a few hexes of Pegu. Whether or not all 5 units due south are all combat formations still hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s possible some of the units reported are baseforce units.

The Burma Division gets a little attention from Japanese air power this turn. Damage is light and fatigue and disruption are fine as well, he’ll need to commit a lot more air power if he hopes to reduce the divisions fighting power before he crosses the river.

Japan conducts a bombardment at one of the bases in the far NE I captured. It looks like he’s slowly building up for his counter-attack there. I’m still strong enough to hold him off I think but he has the edge in AV now.

Japan gets impatient at Manila and conducts a bombardment attack before his units have had much time to dig in their individual fort levels. He pays for it and takes a hit to the solar plexus as allied counter battery fire rips his guns apart. According to the combat report he lost a full 1/3rd of his attacking guns.

Things have been getting a little active around my three bases in the Southeast of China near Wenchow. Several new Japanese units have arrived in the area and are moving around the transportation net between the bases. I’m not sure what he’s up to but I’m going to postpone the planned offensive down there until I figure it out. For now I’ll stay on my bases and dig.

I’ve built up all the airfields to level 2 in the area so if he tries to isolate a base I can begin air ops to lift in supplies if needed. The three bases are close enough together and have sufficient units that could leave to support another base that he’d need at least a division in every hex to make my reopening a supply path difficult. Were he to send that kind of strength to the area I’ll have achieved my goal of pulling strength away from the interior without having launched my planned attack, so I’m not too upset about these new units appearing, in fact I hope he sends more.

My thinking on this is all about time. The more time he spends dealing with annoyances/threats like the three bases near Wenchow or the two bases in the far NE I captured, the more time my units in the interior have before heavy combat hits them. This time will allow them to repair disablements, recover morale and dig forts, so hopefully by the time Japan clears out these nuisance pockets my main defense will be a formidable one.

Sorry my opponent vanished after sending me an email complaining about my strategy. Apparently he was probably reading my AAR as he mentioned I had abandoned Rangoon without a fight but it was still in my possession in game and he shouldn’t have known I was leaving based on game info, so he musta been spying in here. In fact Chinese divisions had begun to arrive to replace the British troops that were leaving, but I hadn’t mentioned that yet in the AAR so he assumed the city was empty based on what he read.

He also made some snide comments about the supply changes in China, so apparently he wasn’t as objective about the test as I thought he was. I was completely up front from the beginning that there was probably going to be too much supply, but that was needed in order to obtain accurate usage rates. He apparently had issue with this and never said a word about it until his last email.

I might try another game in the future with a more reliable opponent with a proven track record of many years of WitP under his belt (no more newbie’s I’ve never heard of before), but I'll probably wait for the new build Symon's been working on before I go in and do all the work to edit the supply changes into a newer scenario file.

It really is a morale test after all the work we put in to have an opponent up and quit on you like this for no good reason. But his turn around times for turns wasn’t really workable anyway averaging about 1 turn a week. Nowhere near fast enough for a reliable test of the changes.
