operation Torch question

Post by sven6345789 »

How do you plan to model the Vichy-troops? some resisted, most didn't. Will there be a random factor to it? For example Vichy-troops in Tunesia acted different.
Will there be some kind of free french Resistance (There was an uprising in Algiers), similar to the situation in Italy after italian surrender?
Bougainville, November 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. It rained today.

The scenario starts on 10 November which is after the Vichy forces ceased hostilities with the Allies. Other than the Tunis Division, no other Vichy forces start the scenario onmap. The French Tunis Division starts around the Tunisian-Algerian border in a position to resist German efforts to move westward from Tunis.

That's disappointing I was hoping it would be a full operation Torch with landings and fighting Vichy forces.

Having the actual invasion would be very difficult to pull off without substantial changes to the existing system.

The actual Torch landings in a game with week long turns would be rather like landing in a friendly port. All the shooting is over after the first hour. Then you get 167 more hours before the turn is over.

Also there were several poorly conceived 'raids' using old RN ships that were designed to take the ports in swifts coups of force but ended up being blood baths. The Vichy had little morale and old weapons but inflicted 80% of their casualties in these commando style operations. And many of them were around company size which is hard to model in the current engine.

I am curious if the USS Ranger is going to modeled. It would be fun to have a roving TF with Wildcats and Dauntless bombers.

For those of you who prefer playing the Axis side will Torch entice those who were not interested in WitW when it first came out to buy it? Something like 250,000 Axis troops were abandoned in Africa and I presume the Axis will be able to evacuate them to Sicily or Italy. That would make an allied invasion and advance more difficult I presume.

The goal of the Torch scenario is holding vp hexes, not how many men you can evacuate. There's another scenario that I like called 4th Supreme Command, where 5th Panzer Army escaped North Africa and is available for use in 43 to contest landings in Italy. Torch is fun tho, it's like cat and mouse. Recon stinks usually and is way off on damage, which is historical, and the axis fighter cover will rip you apart as the allies, so don't fly unescorted. Overall it's fun.

Will there be an extended grand campaign that starts during Torch?

It doesn't look that way from the marketing announcement. Too bad, I was hoping for an extended Grand Campaign also, starting with Torch.

The only other scenario on the list that attracted me was '4th High Command', but I suspect most of us could pull that off using the editor, if we have the time.

Overall, it looks like this offering will most likely be a no sale for me...things might change though, we'll have to see.
