The area around Nanyang. Lots of Chinese units calling Nanyang home so I expect Todd is looking to use this base as a major road block on the road to Sian.

PACIFIC

At 207,93 (a long way off shore from San Francisco) SS I-17 launches 2 torpedoes against xAP President Coolidge – missed.

Near Kodiak SS I-2 puts 2 torpedoes into xAK Utahan – on fire and heavy damage. Confident to record her as lost. TK Hadnot is in the TF… would have been nice to pick that one off. PC Crawford is not happy and makes a fruitless hunt for the enemy.

At 207,92 SS I-6 shots at xAP Rangatira and misses. Same hex, same quarry different hunter – SS I-19 also shoots and misses against Rangatira.

At 204,98 SS I-9 scores a single torpedo hit on AP Hugh L. Scott. The big transport is last seen on fire and apparently suffering heavy damage.

At 205,96 SS I-21 locates the damaged AP Hugh L. Scott. I-21 attacks on the surface and records 2 torpedo hits and the transport is surely done for.

It took me a while to work it out but the Hugh L. Scott and Coolidge started out near Santa Cruz with CA Louisville. They certainly made it confusing as they are travelling in the completely opposite direction to the ships I have been hunting. I seem to have lost contact with them. They have either moved too fast for my submarines or they did make a turn towards PH and are headed there… I’m inclined to believe they are PH bound. I’ve sent a few of the submarines off in the direction of PH in the hope of locating a ship or two with their Glenn scouts to confirm my thinking. In any event pleased to have scored 1 transport.

CHINA

Yamashiro and Fuso bombard Wenchow – 247 casualties (2squads, 10 non-combat destroyed and 1 engineer squad destroyed).

Manpower hits 3
Light Industry hits 1
Resources hits 1

70th and 86th Chinese Corps, at Pucheng, is bombed – 6 casualties.

A couple of Japanese divisions and 5 artillery units have made it to Changsha and begin bombardment. 6 Japanese casualties for 9 Allied casualties. Game reports AV of 863 to the defenders 1707. I’m not in a hurry here and will take my time for a bit… better start getting some aerial bombing in to slow down fort building. Here is the units currently facing each other.

Assaulting units:
3rd Division
6th Division
1st Mortar Battalion
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
51st Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
52nd Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion

Defending units:
58th Chinese Corps
74th Chinese Corps
10th Chinese Corps
26th Chinese Corps
20th Chinese Corps
37th Chinese Corps
99th Chinese Corps
19th Group Army
29th Group Army
9th War Area
17th Chinese Base Force

Japanese forces also start bombardment at Wenchow. The AV here looks more palatable with 840 Japanese versus 605 Chinese.

Assaulting units:
15th Division
17th Division

Defending units:
28th Chinese Corps
100th Chinese Corps
16th Construction Regiment
25th Group Army
3rd War Area
14th Chinese Base Force

Deliberate attack at Hong Kong achieves odds of 3-1 (fort level 0) and this English jewel changes hands into those of another Empire. 1 Walrus II destroyed on the ground as well as ML No 376 and 377 destroy while building. 197 Japanese casualties (2 squads destroyed) to 3107 Allied losses.

Units destroyed 6:
Winnipeg Grenadiers Battalion
Rifles of Canada Battalion
Kowloon Brigade
1st Middlesex Battalion
102nd RN Base Force
Hong Kong Fortress

Deliberate attack at Paotow achieves odds of 2-1 (not bad on the mountain top) and 11th Chinese Corps is forced to retreat. 110 Japanese casualties to 551 Allied casualties (67 squads destroyed).

PHILIPPINES

Day time action near Iba. Maya, Ashigara, Kuma and a couple of destroyers find 3 PT boats. PT Q-112 and PT Q-113 are destroyed.

Manila is bombed – 2 airbase hits, 1 airbase supply hit and 9 runway hits.

A single B-17 makes an attempt on the Natori near San Fernando. 12 Zero pay the bomber attention without managing to shoot it down.

Polillo is occupied by the Japanese.

MALAYA/DEI

Kuantan is bombed – 1 Sally lost to flak + 3 airbase hit, 3 airbase supply hit and 21 runway hits.

3 Wirraway, escorted by 1 Buffalo I, attempt an attack on 5th Division, at Johore Bahru. 2 Zero on CAP account for the escort and flak knocks down a Wirraway.

Mersing expands airfield to size 2.

30 newly converted ACM come on line today. They shall be used to maintain many minefields which have been slowly decaying for the last couple of weeks.

21 newly convert PB also come on line and will be useful in providing escorts and maybe some early ASW groups.

Sanko Maru

Post by SierraJuliet »

Cloaked in darkness Sanko Maru and a bevy of similar ships steamed away from the little horseshoe shaped bay that is San Fernando. Twice now Captain Akatsuka and his crew had made safe passage in and out of the small harbour. On this latest assignment they had transported elements of 48th Division. Safely ashore, those men were already marching towards Manila, via the heavily bombed air base of Clark Field; the large American airfield which straddled a plain in the brooding presence of Mt. Pinatubo.

Only two weeks had passed since the start of this war. Reports of amazing success were constant but that did not mean vigilance could be lessened for Akatsuka and his crew. Akatsuka was well aware of the fate of Yomei Maru… sailing alone, within sight of Pescadores, and caught out by a surfaced enemy submarine and swiftly put down by shell fire. Unbelievable, but it seemed to be true, news had filtered through of an American submarine doing the same within sight of the Navy Base at Yokosuka! Akatsuka well remembered his flight of fancy contemplating a one on one fight with a surfaced sub. Now he was not so sure he wanted to go anywhere near such an action. He had heard of the Navy’s tremendous feat in sinking many of the American submarines at their base in Manila. Even so; he had also heard that American subs were launching torpedoes at Japanese destroyers not far from the sea lane this convoy was now traversing.

Those dark waters all around hid many dangers and American submarines seemed to be as good a thing as any other to put on top of the list as most dangerous. For the rest of this voyage faith must be placed in the pint sized escorts hovering around the empty transports returning to Pescadores. War had turned pleasant voyages into a tense marathon of worry. Unbroken worry until a safe harbour allowed that worry to be flung off.

And then what… after making a safe berth at Pescadores where would the Imperial Admirals want Sanko Maru to sail.

San Fernando

One thing I have noted in the forums is how this game opens our eyes to so many different parts of our world. I'm little different and do get fascinated with imagining what some of these places look like... then and now.

Here is a current overhead view of San Fernando with the little bay that Sanko Maru has been using to off load her military men cargo.

SS I-8, at 193,119 near Hilo, locates xAK Irenee Du Pont, attacks on the surface, and scores 7 shell hits and 5 torpedo hits!!!!!. She also expends most of her torpedo stocks… I think the Captain will be spoken to about his profligate use of torpedoes when he makes port.

Deliberate Japanese attack at Manado achieves 1-1 odds and drops the forts to 0. 42 Japanese casualties to 76 Allied casualties. xAP Hakone Maru runs aground while attempting to unload at Manado. This is nasty as she has flooding in the 40s.

PHILIPPINES

Japanese deliberate attack at Clark Field reduces forts to 0 and achieves 3-1 odds and the base is captured. 129 Japanese casualties to 1161 Allied casualties (24 combat squads, 84 non-combat squads, 28 guns and 38 vehicles destroyed). 2 of the defeated Allied units retreat and 1 is destroyed. Chinese forces (7th Chinese Corps, 84th Chinese Corps and 21st Group Army) have turned up at Sinyang. This is annoying and they shall have to be cleared and the terrain will assist in making this a prolonged process. Japanese forces muster 905 AV to 341 AV but this is adjusted to 770 to 393 bringing in 1-1 odds. Japanese forces suffer 1023 casualties (1 combat squad destroyed) to 762 Chinese casualties (12 combat squads destroyed).

127 mines cleared at Hong Kong.

55th and 77th Chinese Corps, at 85,46 near Nanyang is bombed – 15 casualties.

70th and 86th Chinese Corps, at Pucheng, is bombed – 3 casualties.

Japanese bombard at Sinyang.

Japanese bombard at Changsha – 9 Japanese casualties.

Japanese deliberate attack at Wenchow reduce forts to 1 and achieves 1-2 odds. 1902 Japanese casualties (5 combat squads destroyed, 138 disabled and 1 non-combat squad destroyed) to 543 Chinese casualties (1 combat squad destroyed, 82 disabled and 1 non-combat squad destroyed). I have 15th Division, 17th Division and 4th Mortar Battalion here, backed up by a HQ unit. Up against them is 28th Chinese Corps, 100th Chinese Corps, 16th Construction Regiment, 3rd War Area, 25th Group Army and 14th Chinese Base Force. The reduction in forts makes for a promising outlook here for a reasonably quick victory.

Japanese bombard Wuchow – 1 Allied gun destroyed.

MALAY/DEI

During the night DD Sagiri spares with PT-31, near Dadjangas, but the action is inconclusive. Still night time and PT-31 now locates the Zuiho and Hosho carrier cover group for the Manado invasion… both sides make haste to evade. Daytime and now Nagara and her destroyers locate PT-31, at 78,100 near Djailolo, and another inconclusive action is played out at long distance.

Japanese deliberate attack at Kuala Lumpur achieves 1-2 odds – 42 Japanese casualties. I had been racing the 23rd Independent Engineer Regiment here to try and beat the 22nd Indian Brigade which was also bent on reaching the base. The Indians won the race and are far too strong for my light weight regiment to touch them. I order the Regiment to dig in until the Singapore assault is resolved.

Japanese deliberate attack at Brunei achieves 15-1 odds and the base is captured. 14 Japanese casualties to 137 Allied casualties. 107th RN Base Force retreats.

Japanese parachute forces drop in on Port Blair and capture the base.

JAPAN

Another wild affair between an xAK and an impudent American submariner at Yokosuka! xAK Shinfuku Maru (11 shell hits, on fire) duels with SS Narwhal (7 hits) on the surface until the American runs low on ammunition and slinks away. Sys Dam is in the high 40s as is fires! Luckily the crew rating has climbed to 70 and a nice big dock is handy so those fires can be quenched… fingers crossed.

Submarines

Post by SierraJuliet »

With the ending of one year and the commencement of 1942 I have some graphics to illustrate the current state of play. More to come later but for now I want to display this one as it shows far better than the written words what has been happening in the Pacific to the east of Hawaii during the pas 3 weeks.

I'm most surprised that Todd has persisted with routing his merchant ships, that he has been gathering up from NZ, Oz and the DEI, along this direct line of approach to San Francisco. My subs have been having a time of it and yet the ships (mostly unescorted) still turn up.

This has been a rich lode but surely it must dry up soon and I shall have to work harder to cause backwater discomfort to my opponent.

JAPAN

Fires are completely out on xAK Shinfuku Maru. Straight into the dry dock for a week of repair work.

PACIFIC

SS I-21, at 203,100, scores 1 torpedo hit on xAK Liberty Glo.

SS I-5, at 204,98, scores 2 shell hits and 2 torpedo hits on xAK Anna Odland.

CA Aoba bombards Rabaul – 13 Allied casualties.

Troops unloading over beach at Rabaul.

CHINA

Yamashiro and Fuso bombard Wenchow – 368 Allied casualties (6 non-combat squads and 2 engineer squads disabled), 1 resource hit, 1 light industry hit, 1 manpower hit, fires 2212, airbase hits 2, runway hits 12, port hits 3 and port fuel hits 1.

7th and 84th Chinese Corps at 86,49 near Sinyang is bombed – 8 Allied casualties.

Recon has been showing ships at port in Pakhoi. 14 Sonia make an attack… find no ships so bomb other targets – port hits 2 and port supply hits 1.

70th and 86th Chinese Corps at 87,56 near Chuhsien are bombed.

Wuchow is bombed – 6 casualties, airbase hits 2, airbase supply hits 1 and runway hits 9.

Wenchow is bombed – 1 airbase supply hit and 8 runway hits.

Japanese deliberate attack at Sinyang achieves 619-1 odds and 21st Army Group (615 casualties) is destroyed. This was the single Chinese unit left at Sinyang the day before when the combat units were forced to retreat.

Japanese bombard Changsha – 13 Japanese to 9 Allied casualties.

Japanese bombard Wenchow – 19 Allied casualties.

Japanese bombard Wuchow.

Japanese bombard at 71,56 near Lang Son.

MALAYA/DEI

Troops unloading over beach at Morotai.

SS KXV misses DD Murakumo at Jesselton.

8 Nell, bored with no shipping to hunt, attack Zuid KNIL Battalion, at 48,92 (Praboemoelih) – 11 Allied casualties.

6 Claude sweep Ternate. Reconn indicated aircraft present… want to be sure Todd has no nasty surprise lurking here. For good measure the AF is bombed – 7 casualties, 1 airbase hit, 7 airbase supply hits and 15 runway hits.

The Dutch return to Semarang. 5 139WH-3, 6 CW-21B Demon and 6 75A-7 Hawk versus 18 A6M2 Zero. The Zeros claim 1 Demon and flack accounts for at 139. Most bombers make it through to drop their bombs harmlessly around Kongo.

Raid 2 sees 139WH-3 x 4, B-339D x 2, CW-21B Demon x 4, 75A-7 Hawk x 5 and T.IVa x 3 versus 10 Zero.

CW-21B Demon: 1 destroyed
75A-7 Hawk: 3 destroyed
T.IVa: 1 destroyed
T.IVa: 1 destroyed by flak

Kongo is again the target.

Raid 3 sees 13 unescorted 139 against 5 Zero. 3 bombers shot down with Nachi and Myoko the targets this time.

Raid 4 sees 9 unescorted 139 against 1 Zero. The bombers get through and target Haguro and Fubuki.

Raid 5 – 2 T.Iva against 5 Zero. 1 bomber shot down and the attack falters.

With plenty of AF damage at Singapore I switch to targeting ground troops. 1 Betty and 1 Sally lost to flak, 61 casualties.

Japanese shock attack at Singapore achieves 1-2 odds and the forts stay at level 2.

Japanese ground losses:

2202 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 69 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 22 disabled
Engineers: 6 destroyed, 83 disabled
Vehicles lost 14 (1 destroyed, 13 disabled)

Allied ground losses:

809 casualties reported
Squads: 22 destroyed, 27 disabled
Non Combat: 28 destroyed, 32 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 7 disabled
Guns lost 11 (3 destroyed, 8 disabled)

The Imperial Guards have arrived. After a little tweaking of commanders the extra firepower it turned out to not be too bad a turn… only 4 squads destroyed so happy with that. I figure that 2 downs should bring the horrendous disruption back down to something reasonable and the next assault will be launched… hopefully knock down those forts again. 1 now have 4 divisions plus supporting units and think that this should do the job within the next week.

Japanese deliberate attack at Djokjakarta achieves 8-1 odds and the bases is captured. 8 CW-22 Falcon destroyed on the ground. No Japanese casualties to 235 Allied casualties (75 vehicles destroyed).

Japanese capture Madang.

Tioman Island is occupied by the Japanese.

PHILIPPINES

Manila is bombed – 4 airbase hits and 14 runway hits.

Japanese deliberate attack at Bayombong achieves 20-1 odds. J 16 casualties to A 104 casualties. The 3rd/12th PA Inf Battalion has no means of retreat with all hex sides now coloured red.

China

Post by SierraJuliet »

Here is the current situation in China. I want those mountains north west of Ankang. The thrust in that direction is going well so far... I expect a reaction and Chinese troops to turn up on the mountains. Lucky me if I get there first.

Loyang is the better option to attack between here and Nanyang. I shall see if I can partially encircle Loyang and then force a retreat into the forest north west of the city.

I've also started recon on that forest west of Loyang to see if Todd has positioned troops in the forest.

The Chinese troops pestering the rail connection north of Sinyang are being whittled down and should become less and less of a nuisance.
