OT-What is this

My dad's student pilot plane. Anyone know what type it is? Looks like a single seater so he must be soloing at this stage.

It's a PT-17 Stearman, or one of the Variants of the Stearman 75.

It is a two seater, if you look carefully under the upper wing of the closer aircraft, you can see the seat cushion of the forward position.

Damn. Too late, this is one I knew!

Glad I didn't see it from the same perspective as Cary Grant!

So I guess that was like the pinnacle of the biplane design? Looks like the whole thing is made of metal eh?

One of these days when I'm rich and famous I'd like to get into aviation and learn to fly stuff like that. Couldn't definitely see Mrs. Anthropoid and her little dachsund dog sitting in the passenger seat laughing her ass off as I did loop-de-loops and what not [:D]

It is a very versatile aircraft. There are still a few of these being used as crop-dusters (which was the fate of many of them when phased out by the military).

I wonder - isn't that really a Waco....?

I think you're right. It looks more similar. Especially when looking at the tail section and the "curved" nose.

My Dad flew those in training in Pensacola in 1944. The Yellow Peril. Goddam good airplane, and he didn't barf. There's still a couple flying crops in Baldwin County. And there's two, private owned, that are part of our flying club. I reaqlly need to get some pictures of Beaudy the Wonder Dog with his flight goggles on, hanging out with some of the Blue Angels, waiting to go for a ride. Nowadays, we fly Sport Light, but I have a regular pilot's license. Beaudy don't care, he's just a dog that wants to put his nose out the window. Perfect. Ciao. JWE

That sounds like great fun, Symon - I've never flown a doppel-decker but at 15 I got a few rides with the glider club's towing plane - a Tiger Moth...[:)]..

I think you are right. They are very similar to each other for sure. Still a beautiful plane though, I wouldn't mind owning either. [;)]

Yep, I am thinking Waco now. Look at the streamlined pilots head rest in the rear seat. Matches my old photo. Thanks for clearing it up.
