Need help withdrawing air units

Post by jwolf »

I'm in mid-January 1942 playing the Allies. Several very small air squadrons in Fresno are supposed to be withdrawn, but I don't have that option when I click on them. What am I supposed to do?

Some squadrons can only be disbanded in order to satisfy the withdrawal requirement.

Was never explained very well in the manual.

OK so just to confirm: if disbanded that will satisfy the requirement? Otherwise I have a penalty of 57 PP per day!

Yes. Disbanding will work and is expected for those squadrons.

Might want to 'downgade' the A/C first by swapping in an older model if possible. Pilots too if you're gonna lose 'em.

To expound on Rusty's point, do the following:

"Upgrade" the unit to an older airframe (like a P-35 or P-36). You'll have to have enough of those old airframes to completely fill the squadron. (Note that this requirement seems to only exist for airgroups that are schedule to withdraw).

Then go to the Pilots screen and Release all the pilots to the Reserve.

There's no need to add new pilots prior to Withdrawing/Disbanding (at least that I've seen...could be wrong there).

Now you will have added the (hopefully) more useful airframes to your pool, and have added some (hopefully) useful pilots to your reserve!

Well, these air groups have only one plane each! Not sure about the pilots, though, I'll try to release them first.

Release them to the general reserve too, not the group reserve.

Swapping for other airframes is really only worth it for decent quantities of good airframes.

You especially want to do this for the P-38Es. You get a very limited quantity and there are three squadrons with quantities worth saving.

I believe one has over 20, one has 20 and one has 12. Trade these out for P26s. P35s, P-36s or P43s all of which require some manipulation of other squadrons to get sufficient quantities into the pools.

I sometimes even swap P39s to get these three squadrons worth of P-38s into my pools. P-39s don't have a huge rate of accumulation but you receive them for a very long time it's one of the few airframes you will eventually have an over abundance of.

Oh yes, the Fresno Bolos. I disband them on turn 2 to reduce clutter on the map.

I use Bolos for early war ASW and to train ASW pilots.

Even obsolete airframes have some use.

HansBolter,

Do you typically use the P-38s for LRCAP or Escorting? I haven't found a good use for them. I tend to lose more than they shoot down.

Sweeps for air superiority or LRCAP or CAP with no escort setting.

Escorts fight at a disadvantage. Not good to waste the P38s escorting.

To stop them from escorting set mission to Escort with 50-70 percent CAP or LRCAP and the remainder of percentage on rest.

Sometimes my hard headed squadron leaders send a few out on escort no matter my orders, but those settings at least reduces the frequency and percentage that will fly escort.
