Map Making

Post by lion_of_judah »

I had thought there was a thread regarding map making for TOAW III or how to use bitmaps. I have been trying to locate this information on the forum, but no luck.

Seems like there WAS a thread about map making for TOAW but that was a while ago I'm afraid and I
don't remember the particulars either. I'd like to see a way to use the topographical maps the
government uses to make our maps somehow. Either that or, like Google Maps. Or something.

'HexThingy' is a program that will lay a grid over Google Maps. The ODD program can lay a grid over an image. Both are effective, depending on what you are doing.

If you look in the "Article Index" sticky thread, I have a few articles on map making.

It's just my opinion but I think ODD works better than anything else when it comes to making accurate hex maps. A lot of it is interpretation. It's more like an art. [;)]

Thanks for the link. Now I have to learn how to use it. Is there a learning curve? Why do I ask that every time?

Is there a learning curve?

Of course. What, you want something to be easy ?

Seriously, the issue I find with any of these programs for editing is that we don't use them every day. Maybe once a year, for some once in a lifetime. So its impossible to become familiar with them. I can't tell you how many times I've thought 'I've done this before ... now how do I do it again ?'. No fault of the program designers [unless you elect me president, in which case there will be a law that all programs will be the same]. [;)]

Email Curt. His email should be in the 'About' tab. He's really good about replying. He should be able to get you a link. I've used the map portion of ODD until I can do it in my sleep.

That link leads one to a page that no longer exists. D'oh. Maybe we can get Mr. Chambers to reload it to a new link?

Yes, TDG page is dead, sorry for the confusion. Just trying to refresh Lobster memory, thought it may help.

We may have to sit Lobster down in a darkened room with a lamp pointing in his face and
a stenographer to take down everything he says and supply him with lots of black
coffee and so on.
