Day Time Surface Combat, near Cam Ranh Bay at 64,73, Range 6,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Akigumo, Shell hits 25, and is sunk
DD Asashimo, Shell hits 44, and is sunk
xAK Kogyo Maru, Shell hits 15, and is sunk
xAK Teiyo Maru, Shell hits 12, and is sunk
xAK Noto Maru, Shell hits 21, and is sunk
xAK Nissyu Maru, Shell hits 2, heavy fires
xAK Keisyo Maru, Shell hits 6, heavy fires
xAK Koryu Maru, Shell hits 15, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Toko Maru, Shell hits 5, on fire
xAK Tasmania Maru, Shell hits 55, and is sunk
xAK Yamagata Maru, Shell hits 24, and is sunk
xAK Teihoku Maru, Shell hits 10, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Kamoi Maru, Shell hits 15, heavy fires, heavy damage

Allied Ships
CL Miami, Shell hits 4
DD Ammen
DD Fullam, Shell hits 1
DD Craven, Shell hits 3, on fire
CL Toungoo

Wow - not only did those cruisers have laser guidance for their ordinance, they had very deep magazines! I bet they are even out of 5" AA ammo! [:)]
I presume CL Toungoo is a Cleveland class renamed, and Ammen and Fullam are Sumner class DDs with the 6X 5" guns?

What react setting did you have for the TF?
OK I just checked. DD Craven - who got beat up - is a Gridley class. The other two DD are Fletcher. The two CL are Cleveland class. Ammo of various type remains on the ships, Craven is almost out. The CL have lots of 5 inch and they used a fair slice of ammo, and about half the 6 inch ammo. Overall some 40 mm and even a little 20 mm got used, too!

I pulled Craven's escort back to the CLs as there were only three DD total. She should make it fine.

The Singapore Repair Shipyard recons as 16(35) today compared with 15(36) yesterday, so the Empire is making repairs!

Probably forgot to turn them off from earlier. Could be costly though.
I hadn't thought of that. I figured he wants to repair something that won't fit now. I'll drop him a note.

Could be, but there is a lot to think about these days I'm sure. [:)]

If you can hit that port I sure wouldn't be repairing it!

It's the only large thing in the area, and I now can project significant air power into the South China Sea. Any of the big ships that got any degree of flotation or engineering damage in the battles against the Allies in the Andaman Sea are going to keep it unless they can repair at Singapore, which was my reason for hitting it. Any surviving cruisers can still fit there or Soerabaja, but I can hit that with even more planes. The battleships and maybe, if I was lucky enough with the few hits that I got, any carriers will probably need some repairs to Singers to get fixed up.

I figure the flotation damage to Yamato (assuming that sub-fired torpedo did some) is there to stay unless she makes it through the gauntlet to someplace closer to home. Fuso and Ise are stuck as-is if they haven't sunk already. So it's really the unknown damage that I'm thinking about. Once I get real air bases up and operational on both sides of the South China Sea that will really change the situation. So maybe, if he is better protecting it and repairing it, maybe that's about getting repairs done on cruisers and such faster so that he can challenge the current operations at sea while he gets land forces redeployed?

Bonus pic - Intel Monkey snapshot of IJ ships encountered in battle today.

Edit to add - left it in order by battle number, so ships appear in the order they were seen, some more than once.

Saigon also has a shipyard. I think it starts at 20 but could easily have been expanded.
Between there and the homeland there is HK, Pescadores, Okinawa and Shanghai.
Once the Allies get there hands on one of these shipyards the down time for damaged ships decreases dramatically.

OK - HK etc. I count as past the not-quite blockade of the South China Sea. Saigon I'll have to look at. He could certainly get ships there along the edge of search range (prior to Jesselton starting search missions), but it is pretty exposed to Allied air power with carriers about.

Lowpe - back shortly with that.

obvert -

SWPac: Cam Ranh Bay with a little follow on for Dalat, plus a division for the base down on the coast southwest of Saigon.

PacAO: Okinawa, both bases, plus surrounding islands. Daito Shoto also.

CBI: Mostly what is in play right now. For the longest time I've had a division prepared for a base sort of west of Palembang, I think it's called Sinabang or something similar. Pretend I never read the map!

And there is some overlap/lending of troops between those areas. And I've left out some small ones and back-fill, like the 3x NZ Rgt preparing for Pagan.

That does not include sunk ships and obviously it is not a big fancy list with all the ship info. If you want something added to it let me know.

What really surprised me is just how many of the top experience warships are yet to arrive - what you see are those currently in play. Many of the Allied warships to come have superb ratings.

We have the replay but not the turn (the wrong turn file was sent). Kudat is ours, but a dastardly Imperial submarine torpedoed a peaceful CVE conducting reef surveys, causing two ammo explosions, one for each torpedo. She sank. Nothing else terribly remarkable from the replay. Have to wait for the turn file to see what kind of Imperial Fleet sightings were made.

At Moulmein Imperial troops are seen withdrawing to the SE, but does that include the 4th RTA Division? The 2nd British Division needs probably two more days to cross the river into Moulmein. They are in that gray area where they could possibly make it in one day, but I doubt it. The troops at Moulmein will wait one more day before attacking, presuming that the 2nd will attack with them. The 82nd West African Div and 4th USMC Div have caught up with 2nd British Div and need two or three days to reach Moulmein in movement mode. The USA 5307th Composite Rgt (Rangers) will likely catch up to them tomorrow with the mission of expelling whatever Japanese unit has arrived in this hex (yesterday or day before) to delay our forward progress. With the divisions bypassing them, they have not achieved their mission.

Over at Pegu all units have finished unloading and only one convoy is still unloading supply. With fewer than 1,000 tons to go I will let them finish. Two other convoys finished unloading supply and are passing south of Rangoon on their way to Ramree Island. A convoy of small ships with an engineer Bn should arrive at Pegu tonight. The convoy of LSI(L) at Ramree has finished loading base forces and engineering units for Pegu or, if it is captured quickly, Moulmein. They'll take about three days to reach Pegu, and the carriers, plus Renown, will stand out to provide air escort around the horn, although Victorious is still en route.

CV Indomitable has upgraded at Bombay and should be back on line in 74 days.

The port at Manado is working right to its limits but luckily it will expand to size 4 tomorrow. Frantic movement of forces to ready for the advanced timetable invasion of Cam Ranh Bay continue. CV Franklin has finished upgrade at Pearl Harbor and will rush directly to Manado to join the fleet. SWPac HQ will be moved from Kendari to Balabac to (hopefully) support the Cam Ranh Bay invasion 12 hexes away. I'm not certain of the rules on that - do command HQs help at all from a multiple of their range? We had a false start with recon of Cam Ranh Bay but it will begin tomorrow form two different bases.

The USA 147th IR will cross the river from Tarakan to Tanjoengselor tomorrow and assault the ex-defenders of Tarakan. The 158th at Balikpapan continues to recover, despite a strike by Bettys today which the Cobras on LRCAP did not stop. The Allied attack bombers flying from Celebes did far more damage to the garrison there.

Here is a little pic of the ground control in Burma. At least some Imperial troops are pulling out of Moulmein and at least some others are pulling back from their position SE of there. We do not yet have recon of the three bases to the east but they must be too lightly held for the Admiral's taste. Possible also is the spectre of a landing on the Pacific side of the continent is now influencing deployments.

With such a delay between like this one, things slip a bit. Forgot to check Singapore Repair Shipyard so I just fired up the save to look at it - 17! So the Empire is deliberately repairing it. I'll have to investigate later, but I see three possibilities.

1) Get the shipyard large enough to repair major flotation damage to certain CV(s).

2) Get the shipyard large enough to repair damage to BB(s).

3) Get the shipyard large enough to repair serious damage to multiple cruisers at the same time.

I figure 1) is the most important possibility, but I'll have to investigate later to see which CVs require what size of dry dock.

If the yard is being repaired to take a BB that will be at least two more weeks plus a long time to perform the repairs. I'm not even sure that yard could repair Yamato even when fully intact. Multiple cruisers I consider less likely, as they could be repaired one at a time now without burning the supply. Of course, the yard could repair multiple cruisers at once after repairing one or more carriers.

Whatever it is, I'm going to let it proceed unmolested for now. I have other plans for the B-29s, and I have a large number of additional subs re-basing at Manado to support the upcoming Cam Ranh Bay operation. They will pose a great danger to any carriers that are repaired in time to sortie.

He could expand the yard to repair Yamato, but it costs 1000 supply for every 10 points of expansion, plus 1000 supply to repair the expanded points to functional status.
Even without expansion he is already burning 1000 supply a day on SY repair - all to the detriment of his late war supply situation. Great for you!

The Allies captured:
Tawau
Tandjoengselor

There were Imperial amphibious or airborne operations at:

There were Allied amphibious or airborne operations at:

Our subs came up empty again. Our ASW forces in the South China Sea reported sinking one and possibly a second sub.

Quiet in China. I forgot to order that attack, so it's on for tomorrow. A staff member has been executed in sacrifice.

Several Betty raids on our troops NE of Moulmein advancing on that city. No big damage but they did slow the 4th USMC Div. The 2nd British Div stands at 45 miles and so will cross the river tomorrow, with the forces already landed from the sea attacking in support. Queen Elizabeth and Valiant will bombard in support. The USA 5307th Composite has arrived and will attack the enemy present there. SE of Prome we overcame the rear guard and culled the remaining units from the withdrawing column, forcing them to retreat NE, where they are now located just west of Toungoo. Small Allied units are heading to there location, including one from the battle hex SW of Toungoo to block that hex side, as that is where they are heading for escape.

The USA 15th continues its recovery at Balikpapan despite another Betty raid that was once again too fast for the P-39D CAP to catch. Singapore Repair Shipyard is 18. There are a bunch of carriers in TF at Singapore but at least one in port there, so I think the theory about needing to patch up some shell holes in the hull of a carrier is correct. Cam Ranh Bay recon is up and running, first look shows 2 units; 1,360 troops; 12 guns; 7 AFV; 149 fighters; 17 bombers.

The carriers are nearing Manado to replenish and will next sortie with the Cam Ranh Bay invasion, although I'm not sure exactly how long that will be. Certainly within two weeks, perhaps a lot sooner. We will have 5x divisions available, one of them in regiments (not enough PP to change HQ to combine them), lots of armor and some arty, HQ, and two Rgts to land on the rail line on either side of CRB to block reinforcement. Hmm: I think I'm going to exceed the stacking limit by "a little". Maybe I'll go even quicker with even less. Meanwhile 2x 25 plane groups of P-47D2 have moved to Jesselton and will cover the convoy of support troops that begins unloading tomorrow. Cruiser TF will take up blocking stations at sea.

Here is an update of yesterday's map showing the hex side control in the active area of Burma.
