--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Magwe (after raid below) – 133 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 161(140), refinery 96(5), 24 Jap LCU.

USAAF and RAF bombers attack refinery in Magwe in night bombing raid. Minor additional damage to refinery facilities reported (above). Japanese plane losses in this action were 9 Ki-45 Nick (5 air-to-air, 4 ops). Allied bomber losses included 3 USAAF B-24D Liberator (2 air-to-air, 1 flak) and 3 RAF Liberator B.VI (2 flak, 1 ops). AAR’s and Combat Events report entries follow.

Decision was reached to change primary targeting focus of strategic bombing against Japanese oil/fuel production in Burma from oil production facilities to refineries. A factor considered in this decision was that Japanese transport of (unrefined) oil to the Home Islands rather than (refined) fuel creates a more inefficient use of ship cargo capacity used in movement between Burma and the Home Islands – this a result of oil points transported to the Home Islands having to be refined in the Home Islands on arrival (producing a smaller number of fuel points) compared to transporting (already refined) fuel points from Burma to the Home Islands. A Japanese transport ship arriving in the Home Islands with 1000 oil points aboard would need to have that cargo refined into 100 fuel points vs the same ship arriving with 1000 fuel points aboard going directly into the main Japanese production process. Another factor in this calculation is potential of creating additional time and inefficiency to Japanese production resulting from the need to use refinery capacity in the Home Islands to convert imported oil points to fuel. Other, smaller implications could be in play as well. This is a minor (at face value) but possibly significant impediment to the Japanese war economy in general. If true, this formula is also applicable to oil and fuel production for import to the Japanese Home Islands at other locations.

Summary of Operations 5/26/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 965K, fuel 67K.

Current status of Terapo base – 26K supply on hand. No reported ground combat or air activity this game turn in the Terapo bridgehead area.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 24 Ki-84 Frank (13 air-to-air, 4 ops, 7 on the ground)
• 25 N1K1-J George (15 air-to-air, 2 ops, 8 on the ground)
• 9 N1K1 Rex (5 air-to-air, 3 on the ground, 1 ops)
• 7 D3A2 Val (all air-to-air)
• 2 P1Y1 Frances (both on the ground)
• 3 J1N1-S Irving (2 on the ground, 1 ops)
• 3 H8K1 Emily (all air-to-air)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 20 P-47D Thunderbolt (19 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 8 P-39D Airacobra (2 flak, 6 ops)
• 5 B-25D1 Mitchell (all air-to-air)
• 5 A-20G Havoc (3 flak, 2 ops)

Unplanned fighter vs fighter combat over adjacent coastal hex NW of Buna. The action was unplanned in that it occurred over a hex location other than Buna. USAAF fighter squadrons (based in Port Moresby) had been targeted on Buna base hex and set to fly CAP mission at range = 2. Given the hex location of this action, it appears as if the US CAP fighters re-targeted themselves to the adjacent hex NW of Buna rather than flying CAP over Buna itself. Several game questions at play here…

• When assigning fighters to a CAP mission at range = 2 and also assigning a target hex location (Buna) to the air unit, CAP fighters in the air unit appear to engage enemy planes in any hex within the assigned (2 hex) range, AE basically overriding the air unit’s assigned target hex location and diverting CAP fighters to the other hex under this situation. If true, assigning a target hex to fighters on a CAP mission does not guarantee the planes will go to the air unit’s set target hex when other air combat “opportunities” appear within the range value set for the air unit.

• Assuming the previous theory is true, is assigning fighters to LRCAP rather than CAP mission the correct action? (i.e. fighters assigned to LRCAP over an assigned target hex go specifically to that hex and not elsewhere)

Given the rather small number of P-47’s compared to Japanese fighters in the AAR below, the result is not too bad despite the temporary inconvenience from an Allied perspective. The discussion above intended more as an instructional exercise rather than venting. A quick glance at the game manual did not produce an immediate answer. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 5/27/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 979K, fuel 67K. Small transport convoy from NE Australia arrived and unloaded supply cargo in Port Moresby. Supply transport into Port Moresby from Australia is reduced in volume though continuing sufficiently to maintain current levels of supply and fuel point stocks in Port Moresby.

Current status of Terapo base – 29K supply on hand. No reported ground combat or air activity this game turn in the Terapo bridgehead area.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 5 Ki-84 Frank (all on the ground)
• 4 N1K1-J George (2 ops, 2 on the ground)
• 4 N1K1 Rex (1 air-to-air, 3 on the ground)
• 2 P1Y1 Frances (1 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 1 J1N1-S Irving (on the ground)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 1 B-17F Fortress (ops)
• 1 B-24D1 Liberator (ops)
• 10 B-25C Mitchell (8 air-to-air, 2 ops)
• 1 F-4 Lighting (flak)

Japanese fighter sweeps continue over the adjacent coastal hex NW of Buna (hex location 99, 128). It remains unclear as to Pillager’s objective behind these Jap fighter sweeps (pilot training?) as they’re clearly not attacking Allied LCU or other forces in the hex. I’ve taken the position of largely ignoring these sweeps as opposing them would (for the most part) be a distraction from more useful or essential Allied air missions over New Guinea. Combat with a defined objective vs combat for the sake of combat.

Allied bombing strikes against Lae airfield continue, night raid with one B-25 squadron inadvertently sent over Lae in daylight with the expected plane losses. Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – airfield damage 31, no Jap TF, 20 Jap LCU. No reported ground combat activity at Buna.

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – 29 aircraft (27 fighters, 2 bombers), airfield damage 28, one Jap TF (6 ships including 2 AM, 11 Jap LCU.

Amphibious unloading of supply for Allied ground forces in Buna base hex continues, 102K additional supply unloaded this game turn for a total of 186K supply now onshore with Allied LCU. My original plans for this operation had two days of amphibious unloading ops at Buna with the TF group leaving regardless of any quantities of supply remaining aboard ships. Given the level of Japanese air opposition over Buna (so far) and no indication of any major Japanese surface naval forces or the KB enroute to intervene at Buna, a third day of amphibious unloading into Buna was ordered. I’m projecting an additional 30K supply will be unloaded into Buna during 3rd day operations with small amounts of residual supply cargo remaining aboard some larger ships – residual amounts likely not justifying a fourth day. Approximately 25 US submarines are operating in a wide belt of patrol zones covering a large sea area north of Rabaul and the Solomons including sea approaches to Rabaul and eastern New Guinea from both Truk and Babeldaob, these subs reporting no contacts with Japanese ships or ship-based aircraft. It’s highly likely Pillager is aware of the extent and scale of US sub patrols in this general area – possible deterrent to Japanese surface naval or carrier action. One LSI reported sunk at Buna during this action from 75mm gunfire hit(s). No reported Japanese air activity this game turn over Buna. Latest AAR’s follow.

• 2 P1Y1 Frances (both air-to-air, one destroyed by CAP over US Main Carrier force)

No Allied planes reported lost this game turn in the New Guinea operations area.

Japanese fighter sweeps over the adjacent coastal hex NW of Buna (hex location 99, 128) have stopped. A ground bombardment attack by Japanese LCU in this hex was launched. 2 Australian Division is at full strength, upgraded to 1943 TOE and also dug in (fortification level 2) at this hex. Difficulties for Allied ground forces in this hex location beyond the expected terrain and path related supply issues are not anticipated at this time. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 99,128 (near Buna)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 6012 troops, 62 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 249
Defending force 11778 troops, 140 guns, 129 vehicles, Assault Value = 452

Japanese ground losses:
14 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
Maizuru 1st SNLF
Yokosuka 5th SNLF
19th Naval Guard Unit
83rd Naval Guard Unit
110th Div /3

Defending units:
2/3rd Ind Coy
2nd Australian Division

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Allied night bombing strikes against Lae airfield failed to launch for undetermined reasons, weather conditions not being ruled out.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – airfield damage 12, no Jap TF, 20 Jap LCU. No reported ground combat activity at Buna.

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – 55 aircraft (52 fighters, 1 bomber), airfield damage remains at 28, one Jap TF (7 ships including 2 AM), 11 Jap LCU.

A third day of amphibious unloading of supply for Allied ground forces in Buna base hex placed 17K additional supply onshore in Buna this game turn for a total of 203K supply now on hand with Allied LCU in Buna base hex. 39K supply points remain as cargo still aboard transports. Decision was made to end unloading operations at Buna and begin returning the ships to base, the remaining cargo on-board and relatively small number of ships in the TF still having cargo not justifying a fourth day of operations given the observed rate of cargo unloading into Buna. No reported Japanese air activity this game turn over Buna. Latest AAR’s follow.

Current base status of Luganville – 490K supply and 91K fuel on hand.

Current base status of Noumea – 1.92 million supply and 1.38 million fuel on hand.

Main body of transport convoy WP-192 (13 ships) arrives in Auckland from mainland US. Cargo aboard WP-192 main body includes 79K supply and 4500 fuel. Detachments of WP-192 are still enroute to Suva and Noumea.

The first use of a floating dry dock (ARD) for ship damage repair has started for a damaged LST from the initial Ndeni landing force - 48 float damage, all major. This action started as there are no other ships currently requiring the use of an ARD plus I’m getting some “hands on” experience with using them. Three of the 4 ARD now in the game are based in the South Pacific theatre area, the fourth ARD is currently in transit.

Summary of Operations 5/28/44 (continued)

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 5/28 report intercepted Jap radio signals from Marcus Is and Wotje. Detected statuses of the two bases show no visible Japanese forces or activity at either location.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-75 (16 ships) departing for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes two US LCU (706 Tank Bn, 166 USA Base Force), 74K supply and 20K fuel.

Off-map movement rates for TF between Eastern US and Capetown appear to have slowed since mid-1943, increasing transit times of many EX/XE convoys along this part of the route (Eastern US to Capetown) by approximately 10 days. A possible cause of this may have been recently identified – a small number of xAK (Canadian Park/Fort Cargo class) rated at 11 kts speed entering the game as reinforcements in 1943 were assigned to use in EX convoys. As all other ship types used in EX convoys had 12+ kts rated speed, the one knot difference may be sufficient to add significant transit time to convoy TF where the Canadian xAK were used. Doesn’t seem like much but off-map sea movement may be a particular instance where a 1 kt difference in ship speed has significant effect on overall TF movement speed. If true, the probable solution is removing the slower ships from this route or using them in separate “slow” convoy TF.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 114 aircraft (all fighters), no Jap TF, 14 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 79(122), light industry 9(32).

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 110 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 164(137), refinery 96(5), 24 Jap LCU.

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – 77 aircraft (71 fighters, 3 bombers), no reported airfield damage, no Jap TF, 11 Jap LCU.

Sigint entry for 5/31 reports Jap 17th Infantry Division now located at Salamaua. Previous reported location of 17 Division was Rabaul on 5/08.

Allied ground forces at Buna with 192K supply on hand. Last game turn’s deliberate ground attack resulting in many disabled infantry squads in divisional units – this reducing total AV of Allied ground forces at Buna from 2400 to 1850. The amphibious supply operation into Buna has certainly aided ground operations but due diligence regarding fatigue level and disrupted squads (particularly infantry) in Allied ground units at Buna remains a major factor in conducting the siege. Simply no easy way around it…

Summary of Operations 5/31/44 (continued)

6/44 Ship Upgrades: This month’s upgrade impacts many ships, particularly a wide range of ship types/classes in US naval combat forces.

Essex class CV and all CVL in US Main Carrier force have 6/44 ship upgrades, plus overdue ship upgrades for some BB and cruisers in the escorts. In addition, many ships in the carrier force also have varying levels of minor (wear and tear) damage taken during the Buna operation and the initial Ndeni invasion. Current plans are to stand down the Main Carrier force for ship repair and upgrades to the degree and length of time possible. As a footnote… if you have BB Prince of Wales around in 1944, it upgrades to a very nice carrier escort comparable to if not better than (as an AA platform) with US fast BB’s.

The 6/44 upgrade for US Balao class fleet subs exchanges a 3” deck gun for a 4” but also involves the loss of its minelaying capacity. Loss of minelaying ability is not a significant issue as Mk10 mines carried on these subs have been out of production since 12/42 though I still have a pool of 450 Mk10 mines available at this time. Current plans are to upgrade nearly all Balao class SS except a small 6-8 sub force that will not upgrade as long as a supply of Mk10 mines is available and there is an option to use them for minelaying – once no longer true, the 6/44 upgrade will be applied to all remaining subs in this group. Balao class is the largest group of US fleet subs now in service and it will be a period of time for 6/44 upgrades to be applied on all Balao class SS as many of them are now in active patrol operations at sea.
