Bomber Command PR

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Bomber Command PR

Post by Squid »

So i transfered No.504 from coastal command to Bomber Command and sent them to Coningsby AF. They wont take part in any Strat Recon, not that turn or the turn later. In fact they would do any recon as a part of CC either.

Can someone advise what I am missing?

Who do you get to perform Strategic Recon for BC?

Thanks Again

Just to be clear: you went in to 504 sqd screen, and changed its command to BC, then air transferred it to BC? Then you set a BC AD for recon? And the mission didnt fly?

Options: weather too poor, minimum a/c for mission too big, escorts required and none provided (check you have fighters on Day, assuming recon was a day mission), mission for night and 504 set for day? You know any command c fly recon 'for BC'? Just set the appropriate mission targets and AD. However, equally you ought to be able to get BC to fly recon.

Yes I went to the sqn screen and changed the HQ to BC. Then air transfered them to Coningsby. I then plotted a AD for Strat Recon. When I went to add the air group it was greyed out as unavailble. I can still select it but it add 0 aircraft to the directive. When run the AD doesnt happen. The weather is fine and they are set to both in the mission selection.

***EDIT***

I checked the No Fly info box and it states they are a Naval only group. How can I change that?

Thanks for the reply

Just check the air directive of BC. It tells you how many planes are able to reach he target.

There is a one turn delay for transferred squadrons.

That squadron is marked as Naval Onl

So can I change that?

If not, who is the best sqn/s to perform Recon for BC?

As far as I can tell you can't change that within the game (probably in the editor).

I sometimes use recce from other commands. It doesn't matter what command flies the recce. Only issue of course is number of available directives. Occasionally I combine day/night strikes. So the recce can be flown by 8th AF. Generally though I use the Mosquito PR for bomber command recce wherever they are. Apart from that squadron marked naval only that is.

OK thanks guys. To me it just seemed odd the BC didn't have some integral Recon.

Doesn't matter really who does the recon...all information is 'shared' to all your units in the game. I split my rec planes between two HQ's, with the ones that can only do HIGH camera work in one, and the ones that can only do LOW in the other. The ones that can do both are split between far range and short range..with the shorter range ones with the LOW group.

That way I always do a tactical recce and a strat recce each turn. And remember which is doing which.

I recommend transferring some FC and 2nd TAF RC squadrons to BC. Reason is, you only get some AD's per air command. You probably aren't using up all your BC AD's, whereas if you're like me, you are up against your limit on AD's for 2nd TAF.

It was a well unknown fact that the pilots of Bomber Command were in Bomber Command, because they lacked the required IQ to conduct recon missions. Fly plane to x target at x time (and you have a co-pilot to help you remember time, and the navigator where), tell bombadier to "DROP", fly home.

The other thing to remember, that's also a very unwell known fact is, fighter pilots (especially the renegades that flew recon) would see a serious drop in moral just being assigned to Bomber Command, hell you may have an outright revolt. I streamline my AD's to fit what I need, and I've honestly never used every AD a HQ had a turn.

I find I use most of my AD's:

Northern Europe
tactical recon: Normandy, Pas de Calais, area between these two, Holland
strategic recon: Cherbourg V-weapon, Pas de Calais V-Weapon, Ruhr, Hamburg, Hannover, Magdeburg
interdiction ground attack: Normandy, Pas de Calais, area between these two, Holland
railroad ground attack: Normandy, Pas de Calais, area between these two, Holland
strategic bombing: Cherbourg V-weapon, Pas de Calais V-Weapon, 8th AF AD, BC AD
air superiority: five areas corresponding to naval patrols, plus one over invasion target

So that makes 28 among:
FC
BC
2nd TAF
8th AF
9th AF

In Italy
Tactical Recon: west side of peninsula, east side of peninsula, deep recon
Strategic Recon: Vienna area, Ploesti area, Blechhammer area
Ground attack: west side of peninsula, east side of peninsula, plus land unit attack on a particular ground target
Strategic Bombing: one or two of the areas above.

So that's 10 or 11 AD's among:
15th AF
Tactical AF

What time frame we talking? My heaviest use is when I invade France. I use a lot of ad's then.

This is when I'm invading France (I use the May 1944 campaign so I have flexibility on invasion location). So it sounds like we're in agreement.
