To convert or not to convert....

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Is it better to leave the convertible unit's on-map or convert them to a hq su?

Doesn't it depend? I think it depends on what you need. Sometimes you need on-map units to occupy ground, and sometimes you need HEFT, usually when you are already stacked 3-deep.

The British Armored Brigades in particular pack alot of combat value into an attachment; they are great to distribute to units you want to give help to.

The US Cav units, on the other hand, are too light to make an impact as an attachment, but can be great in a breakout

How are they converted? I mean what do you need to do in the UI to convert them?

Move the unit your converting into the hex with it's hq unit, and hit convert from the unit detail screen.

Cool. I obviously haven't read enough of the manual.

EDIT: Can they be unconverted later?

Cheers,

You can un-convert them, but all the elements must be present in the hq unit when you do.

I convert almost everything into SUs. I don´t want to lose a precious "slot" on the ground to a small BDE/RGT.

You also need to attach multi-role unit to same HQ that you want to convert it and HQ and multi-role unit needs to be in same hex.. Otherwise that button to convert dont show up to UI.

Support role when doing invasions and to maximize units in beachheads. Best to have 2 divisions filled with support units than it is have two brigades or 1 division and 1 brigade hitting those beaches.

Support units on map good when you just need a holding force as you mass your main units for an attack/breakout.

Yep. Filled Divs until breakout, then you need those regiments until the front stabilises...

Another totally stupid question: Pre Sicily Landing I would like to combine the Airborne Regiments in Africa to Divisions. How to do this? I have 3 regiments of the same division on the airfield and when I hit the combine button just a message that it cant be combined appears. What do I do wrong?

Do they all have movement points? That should be the only thing stopping you from recombining them if all 3 regiments/brigades are stacked in the same hex.

Are any of the regiments on "ready to drop" status?

The drop status will not matter. Just highlight and select all three units and then hit the 'B' key to build up the division. This will destroy the Prep Points and planned target hex for the unit.
