Czechoslovak Air Force - October 1962

Post by PN79 »

Hello,
in the attached file is "scenario" which contains units of Czechoslovak 10th Air Army and 7th State Air Defense Army as they exists in October 1962. This scenario is created as historical illustration and can be used and modified by anyone who is interested in it.

There are 21 air bases with 857 aircrafts and helicopters, 16 SAM sites, 6 heavy AAA sites, 33 radar sites and 8 observation posts agains low flying targets.

The 10th Air Army was composed from:
- 25th Bomber Regiment (including 4th squadron for ELINT tasks)
- 45th Artillery Reconnaissance Regiment
- 47th Reconnaissance Regiment
- 1st Transport Airborne Regiment
- 12th Helicopter Regiment
- 1st Fighter Division with:
-- 5th Fighter Regiment
-- 9th Fighter Regiment
-- 17th Fighter Regiment
-- 11th Radiotechnical Company
- 2nd Fighter Bomber Division with:
-- 2nd Fighter Bomber Regiment
-- 6th Fighter Bomber Regiment
-- 20th Fighter Bomber Regiment
-- 12th Radiotechnical Company
- 34th Fighter Bomber Division with:
-- 18th Fighter Bomber Regiment
-- 28th Fighter Bomber Regiment
-- 30th Fighter Bomber Regiment
-- 34th Radiotechnical Company

The 7th State Air Defense Army was composed from:
- 2nd State Air Defense Corps with:
-- 3rd Fighter Regiment
-- 7th Fighter Regiment
-- 8th Fighter Regiment
-- 76th SAM Brigade
-- 77th SAM Brigade (with only one SAM battery active, others waiting for equipment)
-- 186th SAM Regiment
-- 61st Radiotechnical Battalion
-- 62nd Radiotechnical Battalion
-- 63rd Radiotechnical Battalion
-- 64th Radiotechnical Battalion
- 3rd State Air Defense Corps with:
-- 1st Fighter Regiment
-- 4th Fighter Regiment
-- 11th Fighter Regiment
-- 71st SAM Brigade
-- 185th SAM Brigade (without any SAMs, waiting for delivery)
-- 182nd AAA Regiment (last heavy AAA unit in Air Defense of State, but heavy AAA was used by ground army units much longer)
-- 51st Radiotechnical Battalion
-- 52nd Radiotechnical Battalion
-- 53rd Radiotechnical Battalion
-- 54th Radiotechnical Battalion
-- 1st Anti-Radiotechnical Company "L" (not represented in game, there are only few informations about it, probably COMINT unit)
- observation posts (their primary role was to observe varius passes agains low flying targets but unfortunatelly I do not have much information about their organisation and historical development)

My idea is to create similar positions in Bavaria, West Germany and then use it as information tool for creating scenarios.

Any knowledge about NATO units in Bavaria at this time is welcomed.

I am afraid it will not work properly as facilities are modified. For example SA-2B (and single SA-2A) sites are modified to have less (just 12) missiles (either 1D or 11D), two 30mm M53 for close protection instead of SA-7, binoculars for their crews, radars are replaced for Spoon Rest A instead of C and Fan Song B (or A in single SA-2A) instead of Fan Song C. Equipment of radar sites is not uniform in different sites (depending of what I was able to find about them) and there are other modifications (like using quad 12,7mm M55 to represent czechoslovak quad 12,7mm M53 for airbase protection).

Love it! Be sure to make a 1962 AD/EW import once you get your units made. Good stuff!

Originally I wanted to create 1980s situation but while it is much easier to get info about aircrafts dispositions in air regiments the EW sites are much more complicated due to specialized ELINT/SIGINT/COMINT units with not clear subordination (some of such assets belonged to military intelligence). So I decided that it will be easier to start with less advanced period and October 1962 crisis was ideal for this. There are already many SAMs and EW stations but ESM systems like PRP-1 were still in development.

My plan is to recreate similar positions in West Germany and then try some scenarios with it. Later I can get back to the future.

If however somebody wants help with Czechoslovak/Czech organisation in later period for some scenario just ask me.

West German Air Force - October 1962

Post by PN79 »

Hello,
I completed West German Air Force as it exists in October 1962. The attached zip file contains three files: 1) scenario with all Czechoslovak and West German units including aircrafts, 2) Czechoslovak installations and 3) West German installations. If anyone wants to use installations I recommend to modify them according to scenario (this is especially valid for Czechoslovak because you don't want to have SA-7 in 1962 etc.).

West German Air force in October 1962:

Luftwaffengruppe Nord

- Fernmelderegiment 71 // SIGINT and COMINT unit, not represented in the scenario
- Flugabwehrraketenbataillon 31 // subordinated to ground forces up to 1961 with different name, preparation to rearm with HAWK missiles (hence new name but still old equipment)

- Fliegerdivision Nord
-- Jagdbombergeschwader 31
-- Jagdbombergeschwader 35
-- Jagdbombergeschwader 36
-- Aufklärungsgeschwader 52
-- Aufklärungsgeschwader 54

- 3. Luftverteidigungsdivision
-- Lufttransportgeschwader 62
-- Lufttransportgeschwader 63
-- Flugabwehrregiment 3
-- Flugabwehrregiment 13
-- Fernmelderegiment 33 // there aren't british Type 13 height finders which were used by this unit so instead there are HF-200 in the scenario

- 4. Luftverteidigungsdivision
-- Jagdgeschwader 71
-- Jagdgeschwader 72
-- Flugabwehrregiment 4
-- Flugabwehrregiment 14
-- Fernmelderegiment 34 // there aren't british Type 13 height finders which were used by this unit so instead there are HF-200 in the scenario

Luftwaffengruppe Süd

- Fernmelderegiment 72 // SIGINT and COMINT unit, not represented in the scenario
- Flugabwehrraketenbataillon 32 // subordinated to ground forces up to 1961 with different name, preparation to rearm with HAWK missiles (hence new name but still old equipment)

- Fliegerdivision Süd
-- Jagdbombergeschwader 32
-- Jagdbombergeschwader 33
-- Jagdbombergeschwader 34
-- Aufklärungsgeschwader 51
-- Aufklärungsgeschwader 53

- 1. Luftverteidigungsdivision
-- Jagdgeschwader 74
-- Lufttransportgeschwader 61
-- Flugabwehrregiment 1
-- Fernmelderegiment 31
-- Flugkörpergruppe 11

- 2. Luftverteidigungsdivision //note: FmRgt 32 wasn't formed yet
-- Jagdgeschwader 73

I welcome any additional information and corrections.

RE: US 17th Air Force - October 1962

Post by PN79 »

Hello,
I have another addition to my scenario: the United States 17th Air Force in West Germany. This is however not the only addition. I have started to change single-unit air bases to full stack - group air bases as these are needed if I want to simulate air attacks against air bases. So far I have complete all czechoslovak and all american air bases in this scenario. The work on this is pretty time consuming and there are not enough information about exact disposition of air bases in 1962 so I often use modern layouts with some tweaks. Not perfect but good enough for my goal.

Apart of US 17th Air Force I have also added Czechoslovak ground forces main AA and SSM units. The reason for this is that different countries has different organisational structure of its air defences and I do not want to ignore this. Presented czechoslovak units are ground forces mobile radar units, armies' AA brigades and regiments and SCUD equipped units. Divisional AA assets (at that time each division had one AA battalion) is however not included because these units are too tied to its parent divisions and its tasks.

17th Air Force in October 1962:
(american used air bases in Germany are represented here)

- 36th Tactical Fighter Wing
-- 22nd Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 23rd Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 53rd Tactical Fighter Squadron

- 49th Tactical Fighter Wing
-- 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 8th Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 9th Tactical Fighter Squadron

- 50th Tactical Fighter Wing
-- 10th Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 81st Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 417th Tactical Fighter Squadron

- 366th Tactical Fighter Wing
-- 389th Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 391st Tactical Fighter Squadron
-- 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron

- 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing
-- 17th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron
-- 18th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron
-- 32nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron
-- 38th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron

- 38th Tactical Missile Wing
-- 71st Tactical Missile Squadron
-- 89th Tactical Missile Squadron
-- 405th Tactical Missile Squadron
-- 822nd Tactical Missile Squadron
-- 823rd Tactical Missile Squadron
-- 887th Tactical Missile Squadron

- 601st Tactical Control Squadron

- 86th Air Division (Defense)
-- 32nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron
-- 496th Fighter Interceptor Squadron
-- 525th Fighter Interceptor Squadron
-- 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron
-- 602nd Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron
-- 603rd Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron
-- 604th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron
-- 615th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron
-- 616th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron

Added to this "side" in game is also 322nd Air Division (Combat Cargo) which was in fact subordinated directly to USAFE (I have it here together with 17th Air Force because I do not plan to create separate side for USAFE subordinates). It consisted from:
- 39th Troop Carrier Squadron (Medium)
- 40th Troop Carrier Squadron (Medium)
- 41st Troop Carrier Squadron (Medium)
- 52nd Troop Carrier Squadron (Heavy)

EDIT: Added 366th Tactical Fighter Wing which was at this time deployed in France.

I am still very slowly continuing on this so there is current version. Apart of corrections the main addition is US SAM sites and SSM units.

Bundesmarine - October 1962

Post by PN79 »

Added West German Navy - Bundesmarine

Researching its ground assets was not easy so any corrections are welcomed. Naval bases Eckernförde and Olpenitz apparently weren't operational yet. There is disturbing hole in coastal radar coverage between MFmSt 622 Hörnum (which may be was not yet operational in 1962) and MFmSt 623 Wangerooge. I could not find anything to cover this hole. Only in later period there was set HF radar in Büsum.
