Map overlays

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Map overlays

Post by ivanov »

A dumb newbie question - there are numbers and digits on the hexes highlighted by the map overlays ( LOS, spottable range, max fire range ). What actually do the mean? I get that the higher the number, the better visibility of the hex, but what are they? Also the LOS hexes have different colours - why is it so?

The LOS overlay is partially transparent white, so the different colors are just a side effect of the color of the underlying map hex.

Think of the hex number as being the per cent chance of spotting a unit in that hex. I don't know the actual calculation. Even "open" terrain has a measure of relief (small folds in the ground), so nothing is 100. Lakes are 97 or 98.

With the LOS checker, you don't really get the value of each hex, other than the ones right next to a unit. The LOS effects add up along the LOS. So, you can see "into" a built up area or forest, sometimes. Unlike other games, and more like real life, there is very little in the way of features that block LOS like a wall. It takes a hill or valley to do that. Trees and buildings hinder spotting a stationary unit, but don't prevent it.

If you've played other games where a town hex or woods hex absolutely blocks LOS and you expect the same in this gamer, you will get some surprises.

If the advanced LOS option is on then there is a green to red colored hue to the LOS display. Green being good and red being bad. The numbers are a basic indication of visibility in the hexes.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!
