Hungry in Romania

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Hungry in Romania

Post by Q-Ball »

Just learning the game, going well so far, but have a question I need help with. I can't get supplies to any airbases in the Balkans. As a result, the planes are getting damaged, and no units are taking replacements.

HQ is Luftflotte Reich, supply priority 4, etc, so any help appreciated, thanks! Screenie attached:

According to the RuleBook pg. 68, Ground Unit Exclusion Zone:

...off limits to ground units other then Air HQ units. Air Base units and air group units are allowed in these areas, as are air HQ units and antiaircraft support units attached to locations. .... The areas off limits are Hungary, Rumania, Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Greece, Bulgaria, Albania and Axis controlled areas of the Soviet Union. (They have those?)

So it would seem that it may not be working as designed. Unless rail cars and trucks count as a ground unit.

They should be able to get supplies from depots. Can you attach a save or email one to 2by3@2by3games.com. Ideally a save before the German turn.

Is there a way to do that for a server game?

In the meantime, here is the Depot at Bucharest. Plenty of supplies there.....

Bump, and also still wondering how I can get you guys a SAVE from a Server game to check it out.

Here is an AA unit in Bucharest; there are plenty of supplies, but the hoarders down at the depot are obviously refusing to share with ANYONE. I can't figure out the problem here. They are in the same city. Over at the airbase, I am losing aircraft to damage, because there are no supplies at all for maintenance.

This could be the same bug that's stopping priority repairs from happening at the industry out there.

Plenty of supplies, maybe, but no freight... Look at your picture showing depot in Bucharest.

The four color bars are (see one page guide 5 on logistics) :

green = freight received
blue = stored
red = shipped
black = capacity

Your depot has 0 freight stored, received barely anything and used it all.

My guess is your guys in the depot would be very glad to send supplies to every unit in the zone but can't do so because they have no freight...

Look at the manual, 20.1.3 Freight
Freight represents the generic capability to transport
material through the supply grid. Units receive
supply and replacements directly from depots via
the automatic use of vehicles by expending freight
tonnage and turning it into needed available items
from the production pools. Freight is not converted
to the actual material, whether it is fuel, supplies,
ammunition, vehicles or ground elements, until it is
drawn upon by the end user. This is usually a ground
unit, though depots require fuel and vehicles. In
addition, freight cannot be converted into a specific
material unless that material is available in the
applicable virtual production pool. For example,
when one ton of freight is moved to a unit that is
getting supplies, it is converted into one ton of
supplies and at the same time one ton of supplies is
consumed from the general supply pool (26.3.3). A
shortage of needed material in a pool or a shortage
of freight in a player’s depots will have the same
result of not being able to meet a unit’s supply and
replacement needs
.

So, next question is why you have no freight there ?

That's a good question on Freight. The rest of the Reich seems to be operating normally:

Bucharest is toward the bottom; note the very heavy truck use

The only items in the Logistics Event Log are 2 entries that show 34,412 freight being shipped from Fiume to Bucharest. There is nothing showing a shipment FROM Bucharest, even though the summary below clearly shows all of that freight going somewhere.....into a black hole I guess.

Is it something I can do, or is this a bug?

EFB box is active; is all that freight being shipped east? Makes sense, except some should be retained for units in Romania.....

I have not changed any Depot Priority settings, but I just noticed that the Priority for Warsaw, Budapest, and Krakow are all set to ZERO. I wonder if that's the problem, that all EF Freight is trying to route through Danzig and Bucharest. That would also explain why those two depots are using so many trucks. The scenario default should be set to (2) if that's the case.

I downloaded the save off the server. Bucharest got 34k tons of freight, but only sent out a few to a nearby airbase. I don't know if the rest is going to the East Front. Will send the save to Gary to take a look.

Still a problem.......Bucharest Depot is Priority 3, and every turn 30000+ tons of freight go through the place on their way to the Eastern Front. As you can see, hardly any sent to the airbase right across town.

Corrupt Romanian officials?

Gary has adjusted things so that all he freight doesn't go to the East Front. That's what was happening in these cases. This won't be fixed in the next update that should go out later today, but will be fixed in the update after that.
