American User Data

Post by JohnOsb »

While I can't post any links or screenshots until I have posted ten (10) messages. I want to ask this about the American Formations spreadsheet.

What does these mean?

Division 86 Formations (83+)

Armoured Cavalry Regiment (85+)

Infantry Division Formations (85)

Arm/Mech Division Formations (90)

Those are the headers for the formation data that follows. The (83+) is the years in use. In this case 83 onward.

Jim,

How can I make a small formation change to the appropriate American xls file(s)? If it's a big deal, I'll wait until the Mod Guide for that comes out.

Thanks

What kind of change? There are also a number of posts in the mod section on formation editing you can check out. Wabac, Tazak, and Plodder, have asked a number of questions that should be helpful to look at.

It's pretty fundamental - The game won't recognize the xls file because I added a unit into a HQ formation. Maybe I should create a mod folder.. or something. I know about the custom folder for maps, maybe OOB's too?

The User xls should load when selected in the Scenario Editor. Can you get me a screen shot of the error and the HQ formation change?

I'm saving xls file using MS Works Spreadsheet. If I open the file and just save it (no changes), USER doesn't show up as an option during scenario design. So sounds like my application (Excel 97-2003 xls) could be outdated?

Tons of content and PBEM to keep me busy, anyway. It's amazing how far it's come since the original FG.

Could be. I've been editing mine with OpenOffice 4.1 with no problems if that's any help. Do you get any error message at all when you start the scenario editor? One trick I've found is to close the spreadsheet before opening the editor as the editor looks for any files with .xls suffix. Both Excel and OpenOffice create temporary backups with .xls suffix when they are running, which the editor can't read and gives out an error. You can reopen the datafile when the editor is open though, and then can edit and check results in real time.

I'm careful to close down. I'll have to search around (carefully) for a free program like OpenOffice that will open .xls files. I could also try someone else's USER file that has been modified slightly to see if it will appear.

The OOB is great as is, but just wanted to test it. Thanks for your response and mods.

We are saving a 97 compatible version. MS works is not the best thing, I had forgot about it to be honest, but The Plodder has a good idea about finding a better program that is fully excel compatible.

I'm using Excel 2007 and that is what I'm saving as not Excel 97. Capn Darwin, I'm assuming that you had no problem opening the Excel spreadsheet that I sent to you. Plus I'm not having any problems opening or using Excel 2007 with the scenario editor.

I'm using Office 2010. The sheet should be good down to office 97. As long as it is XLS, the game will read it.

Yes, I am really pushing it with Office 2003. That's 12 years! But MS Word works for my job, and I am not inclined to buy the new package [;)]

I've been using my copy of Office 2003 and it seems to be working ok for me.

If it's not your program, what unit were you trying to add to the HQ formation? A formation can only be comprised of either units from the unit tab or other formations. Not both.
